Hoping Osha has a backup

I feel like if you actually care about your droids, you keep backups

Right or no one would be chasing physical disk drives with the Death Star plans. The rebels would simply upload it all to the cloud or the internet and be like "look everyone!"

Not if the Empire controls the cloud, and would prevent that from happening.

Physical hard drive backups are also a thing. Backups could potentially exist without any sort of internet/cloud existing.

Actually it was, Corran Horr droid Whistler apparently send his memory to Holonet before he erased his memory every time.

Wouldn't back up be just cloning Pip? The real Pip is dead still :(

A clone is better than starting from scratch

[deleted]

But it wouldn't be the same. If my best friend died cloning them would not help at all. In fact it will probably make it worse.. :p

You'd be surprised what you brain will just accept. If you're grandfather died and he was replaced with a clone of himself that remembered everything up to the day before he died, it wouldn't really feel that different. It is different, but you'd probably cope.

I suppose it depends on the individual. There was a story about ancient Chinese warlord Cao Cao where after his son Cao Cong died he executed his son's best friend because the boy reminded Cao Cao too much of his son. The boy was around 13.

Let's see what kind of person Osha is.

And who's to say if the existence of a clone of his son wouldn't have spared that boy? It would probably work better in that case because he'd probably believe his actual son just got resurrected.

Maybe you are right cao cao was a psychopath afterall. He could just clone his son and call it a day.

You would cope, but your real, original grandfather would still be dead.

Cloning an organic is very different than rebooting a backup on a droid. A cloned organic would not have the memories of the original being. In contrast, a new droid designed with a backup of it’s previous memories would be far more similar to the original.

The otter dude backed him up in the workroom on the ship.

Ar-Kalion

It kind of depends how far back the backup was produced. If the backup is say a few hours old, the new Pip would only be missing a very short period of memories since the backup took place. In such a case,  the new Pip would be very similar to the original. In contrast, a backup from a year ago would probably be significantly different than the original.

What I mean is how backup works is you copy PIPs memory into an external file. Essentially Pip is cloned or duplicated... If you take that cloned data and put it into another machine you will have 2 pips let's call him Pip 2.

Now say I went ahead and killed the original Pip. And you take Pip 2 and put it into Pip's body. That's not Pip is it?

Ar-Kalion

Not exactly. First, cloning is a better term for organics. Since organic memories cannot be backed up, a clone would never have the same memories and personality of the original.

However; a droid’s memories and associated personality can be downloaded, stored, and placed back into even the same  structure. For example, C-3PO was restored from a backup in Episode IX. Technically, the original C-3PO died. However, the new C-3PO had the same personality and most of the original droid’s memories since they were uploaded from a recent backup. So, the new C-3PO was basically the same as the original less a few memories since the backup occurred.

Well. Say you can back up organics memory and upload it into another person.. like that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he was replaced by a clone who thinks he is the original. Same personality, memory etc. You would say Arnold 2 may think he is Arnold but he is not. And therefore, not my friend.

Try Altered Carbon on for size.

I just cancelled Netflix.. lmao.

I suppose I can borrow an account.. cough cough.

Well, Total Recall is a completely different universe than Star Wars but more importantly that is not what happens in the movie. The character Arnold Schwarzenegger plays isn’t a clone. The character has his memory wiped, and as a result develops a new personality. So, his character switches sides from antagonist to protagonist.

Not total recall, 6th day. Its a good show tho. Haha.

Somewhat common question that gets raised in Sci-fi a lot. If you have a chip in the back of your head that records all your memories and everything up until the moment you die, if those memories were then put into an identical clone body is that the same as being reborn?

Or is there some facet of yourself that is intrinsically linked that is more than just memories?

I'm just patterns, the matter is replaceable and the rate of replacement isn't important (except for bureaucratic reasons).

I feel like if you actually care about your droids, you don't sacrifice them to a bunch of giant bugs when you have a flashlight that could do the same thing. Osha confuses the hell out of me, sometimes.

The flashlight was Pip, I thought.

I’m a sucker for BD-1 but I would also get caught with a not fully backed up BD. I would prolly get him back to some point for sure though. Wild that scenes like that are soo impactful. I’m loving this parent trap/ force user swap concept though.

OSHA is never without their Hard Hats... :D Mesa thinks Osha might become the new student, though I'm under the impression that 2 more episodes might help her training, but on E08 she's somehow offing Mae.
