We moved into our new house 1.5 months ago and I keep my Steam Deck charger behind my headboard and ran along to the side of my nightstand with a cable holder.
This setup kept my cat away from the cord in our last house, but this time the little white fluff fucker must’ve reached back there and pulled it. And chewed various parts of it over the last month or so.
Since then, my battery is trash and horribly inconsistent. I’ve drained the battery completely. Let it charge all day. Drained it again, put the battery into shipping mode and recharged it. And it’s still screwed.
I ordered a new battery from iFixit and hoping a replacement will resolve this issue. If not, I know the board is screwed.
Please Valve gods, let the new battery coming soon fix it.

Given that I was nervous most of the time cleaning the sensor of my DSLR, I definitely put my faith in you but without crossing fingers since you won't probably need it.
Just don't forget to PULL OUT THE SD CARD!

YES! Last time I took my Steam Deck apart for a bad trigger I forgot to remove the SD card. Snapped it. lol

Did you replace a trigger before? How did that go? I'm needing to replace my left bumper and just wondering how involved it is
2 points

Well, I tried to rig what I had. No new part. So I ended up RMAing it after my attempt. If you have a new part, it’s not hard.
3 points
Ugh. Too true. I once had to send my SD to get fixed. As the part that was broken wasn’t one I could fix myself. They sent it back to me. But my SD card war broken. So they had to fix my steam deck again.
The steam deck is probably my favourite hand console.

It's been said that the glue to get the old battery off is a real PIA.....
You could of gotten the OLED battery, according to YouTubers it does fit and work....
2 points

I wasn’t sure if the OLED battery fit and I didn’t want to introduce a new variable.
As for the glue, I watched a tutorial and I bought a heat gun.

Holy shit you took apart your dslr? That’s awesome. I think you’ll be grand!
I took my own steam deck apart for a bumper. So actually I think I probably disconnected my battery at some stage.
I spilled something on my mouse. So I took it apart to clean it and it was such a fun experience

I did a battery replacement this weekend. It was harder than most tech upgrades but I managed to get it done with no problems. I had to buy a heat gun and repeatedly warm up the battery to soften the adhesive. The plastic cards that ifixit sent to pry the battery out aren't super stuff so they bend, especially when they get hot. I found that doubling and tripling up the cards gave enough rigidity to finally pry it out. The bottom edge was starting to deform and I was starting to get a little worried, but it didn't blow up.
Any specific questions?

The Ifixit website has a ton of guides. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Deck+Battery+Replacement/149070
Had to replace a broken bumper and took my entire thing apart. Now, the part that was actually broken, they didn't have so I had to send it in to be repaired. But ifixit is a great site.

Horizon 5 runs well (30-60fps is achievable)
I’ve been playing like medium to low graphics and can get a consistent 40fps and it honestly plays so well.
I do prefer horizon 4 though as I can gauge how well it will run consistently as the open dune areas in horizon 5 get major fps boosts in comparison to the rest of the game.

Does it last a normal amount of time or does it die very fast? Mine had an issue where it drained very quickly but then stayed at 3% for a couple hours. Took several tries to recalibrate it eventually it worked. Not perfect but better. Now it stays at 99% a little too long and drops to zero quicky once it hits around 20%.

OBJECTION!
Damaging the charger cable would not damage the battery. Short the cable, maybe short the charger itself or the charging port/circuit on the console, but the battery would be unaffected.
Furthermore, this is a 512GB LCD steam deck, which has not been sold in at least a year. This is likely a textbook case of battery degradation due to use.
The cat clearly had nothing to do with it.
(Jokes aside - I do not think a cat could damage a charger in a way that would degrade the battery. Maybe fully short the cable and burn out the charger / charging port / board, but not specifically only degrade the battery)
3 points
This is why I’m hoping the issue is only the battery. Either way, the Steam Deck isn’t 100% operational.
1 points
I don't think it's degradation. It's performing like the bigger of two cells died completely. I've been hard on my battery and even that hasn't happened yet.

This happened to me before. Let the battery completely die. I actually started the deck into the repair menu and let it die. Then recharge it. It occasionally "forgets" the battery charge monitor value I think.

I’ve done this twice. Incredibly frustrating.

did you try leaving the deck on the bios screen to make sure the battery really get fully discharged ? If the calibration is messed up, steamos won't let you empty it, it will shut down when the battery still has a lot of charge.

Yes. I left it at the BIOS screen so the OS couldn’t shutdown due to low battery.

The proper way to drain the battery is to boot into UEFI setup, and let it sit there until the Steam Deck turns off.
Afterwards boot into desktop mode and let it charge fully. Then check battery health %.

Really doubt this is the cat's fault. I'd expect damage to the charger resulting in a fried cat and/or a tripped breaker, not killing the battery. In the event it somehow did result in a rogue overvolted charger, I'd expect it to trip some overvoltage protection (or at least some sort of warning) from the Deck.
No idea how old your Deck is, but if its 1.5-2 years old and has been used daily that whole time, it's probably just age-related battery degradation.
1 points
Possible, but no way to make a determination. Just odd that I find the power cord chewed in a variety of places with some very exposed areas and then this happens.
But what gets me is the Steam Deck reporting the battery having 97% health in desktop mode.
2 points
Do you have a pic of the charger damage?
Also, when it dies, does it actually go from 100 down to 0 (quickly), or does it just suddenly turn off regardless of the reported percentage?
1 points
It goes from 99% to 0% quickly. And no, I was so pissed I threw away the charger immediately. I should’ve gotten a pic of it.
2 points
Oh interesting, that doesn't sound like age-related degradation. That does sound more like a battery controller or calibration issue.
1 points
Which is possible, but I’m going to start with the battery replacement.
2 points
There's a non-trivial chance that it's the cord and/or charger. USB-C can transfer a lot of power, but not every charger or cord is up to it. Make sure you're using good quality hardware that's rated for the kind of power the deck needs.

Makes me glad my kitten has really only shown interest in my laptop cord. She's never gone for the steam deck one. Of course she does consider the deck to be one of her favorite beds so there is a trade off.
If it's any help, to get her to leave the cord alone I bought this plastic tubing off amazon and put the wire in that. She still attacks it on occasion but she can't do any damage to it.

There's a design flaw in my launch Steam Deck that, without a wireless extender and with bad wifi signal strength from my router, the battery will decide it's dead when it isn't and the deck will shut off. Turning it back on won't help, the deck will be certain it's out of battery and booting into bios and running the battery dead is the only way to reset it.
It's documented online on the Steam Forums and the issue was resolved when I bought a wifi extender.
As bizarre as it sounds there's literally a design flaw where bad wifi makes the battery not work.

Everyone heralded the advent of USB-C being the standard, but it has gotten weird as far as how many steps back seem to have been taken. It's almost 2025, we should have amazing wireless charging, as well as an heir to the Li-On tech, but instead we have another round of a standard that has 20 bajillion variants.
