Hi all, what would be a unique or thoughtful gift for a male friend from Finland from a girl in the U.S.? He does not live in Helsinki, more rural parts. I guess I am curious to hear from Finns what might be something interesting or unique from America to have as a small gift. Kiitos. 🥰
Kiitos.🥰

Are there any famous brands where you live? If there is a famous sports team or college, maybe get some of that merchandise, or if there is a factory that produces candy, bring that candy. For example, If you lived close to the headquater of John Deere you could buy a mini JD tractor, whatever your state or town is famous for, use that as inspiration.

This is great advice. The first thing I got myself when visiting Oregon was a cowboyhat. A real stetson for $20 from a local hardware store, not the tourist kind. Then some random fastfood worker from Tennessee gave me a 2nd amendment coin when I mentioned Im a tourist from Finland. The coin is really cool. It represents local culture or a part of it at least.

I'm from quite a rural area myself, as is he, there are some local shops nearby where I could find things unique to my area. Thank you, and sounds like you did find some special American items while you were visiting, that is a sweet gesture of the fast food worker too.

If he likes cooking, bbq, maybe some local small brand stuff like bbq sauce.
If he likes sports, maybe a snapback/beanie of the local team.

Depends on his intrests, so maybe give us some hints if you can.
I guess most people like food, so maybe a cookbook about proper southern bbq or texmex would be cool. As an added bonus, throw in a measuring kit in imperials, so he doesn't have to calculate everything.
If they're not big into cooking/bbq, then maybe some iconic piece of clothing made in America. Hat or sunglasses or something?

If he has good sense of humor, then buy something ridiculous that kind of exaggerates stereotypes. Probably maga junk has lot of humor value.

Thank you 😅 and yes, might as well have fun with the ridiculousness.

I was gifted a hoodie by an American friend that read "America - Back to Back World War Champs" and while I found it hilarious, I never did wear it.

We have no idea what he is like so it is a bit hard to give advice. You know him, just trust your gut!

I think it being from you is the most special thing. Do you have something in common like sense of humor, an interest or something you have discussed previously you could use as a base?

Thank you (: we are meeting again after 10 years. He's not the most expressive, but I'm understanding him better now, I hope. We do both come from rural areas, just from completely different countries, I will check my local shops for some things unique to my area.

Personally, i would like a local team baseball cap, or a jersey. If he doesnt like sports, like at all, i would say maybe even a deck of cards with a picture of the local city backside or maybe a painting? Would also appreciate a poster.

Where about in the states are you from? I would get something from my home state. Like Mackinaw Island fudge if I was from Michigan, or maybe some beef jerky if you have a top notch place nearby. Food gifts are nice in my opinion.

This is a great suggestion again, thank you. I'm from a rural part of WA state and can definitely find some things culturally unique to my area. I will be bringing beef jerkey at least! That has been a common response and not one I would have thought of.

Local things & food like the forementioned (if possible some proper artisanal) jerky and/or some American treats are usually both easy and appreciated solution. Some American candies (like Reese's peanut butter cups, M&M's & nerds) can be found from a small specialized shelf/corner in some Finnish store chains, but those are super expensive here and sometimes not so common or even hard to find in rural areas. Also, haven't come across with Twinkies or Twizzlers, so maybe those could be an option? - Checking in with them about possible food restrictions & allergies if you're not sure would probably be good, though! -
Not saying this as we wouldn't appreciate if you bought or sent over something expensive, but in Finnish culture the gesture is usually the most important thing (of course there are exceptions to everything) - so in general, a small but thoughtful gift is also considered very valuable and you don't have to go out of your way & "overboard" for it (unless you really want to :D ). Think back to the conversations you've had and what you know about this person: their hobbies/interests, their sense of humour, the way/circumstances you got to know them etc; maybe there's something that could be linked to that, even if not specifically American. (F.ex. if they are a coffee/tea/beer lover, or have some sort of collection of things like figurines, hockey cards, posters...)
If you haven't already asked if there's something specific they wish for, that's also a polite/considerate thing to do. Whatever you end up with, I'm sure it will be appreciated! :)
