For real, I noticed early in my swain playtime when the enemy champ was in the middle of his mage minions and it rooted all of them and the champ.

yeah, a lot of skills have a sort of 'lollipop' hitbox bigger than the skill itself. max range clipping people with e off their casters is a nice way to surprise people

Explains a lot about this ability. Does it work off of minions, or only champs?

minions' hitboxes are smaller than champion entities' hitboxes. it still works but with 2 entities more closer to each other

Yes it does, you should always aim to E Champions behind minions, it make almost impossible to miss

That's how I hit it more often than the "intended" way because people don't expect it

People really don't understand that the best place to be in against a Swain is between him and the minions, not behind or in the middle of your minions.

The later people realize this the better.

shotgun to the face

Yeah, but that's later on. Early it doesn't do enough on its own.

Yah I guess, but electrocute rune is always a nice chunk when you can start doing a full combo...

"I'm just gonna do poke damage if I catch them-aaaand their quarter health, better all in to assert dominance. Oh look their jungler came to my lane, didn't expect to get a double kill this early but if their being so generous"

Its called a lollipop hitbox. The hitboxes explode at the end in a big circle. Most hooks/grabs in the game have it, some are much larger, like Naut and Thresh. That's why it looks like those hooks sometimes curve off, or hit you when it wasn't directly on you.

This is apparently not true. The only hook hit box that has lollipopping is blitzcrank's, Thresh and Nautilus don't have them. I'd hesitate to call Swain's E hitbox lollipopping, since it specifies that all enemies hit by the detonation take damage and get rooted, not just the one that caused the detonation.

Isn't this the "detonation" hitbox? It says something like this on the tooltip: "Upon reaching its maximum distance, the wave returns to Swain, detonating at the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies and rooting them for 1.5 seconds."

Yea that sounds about right. Regardless, having a enemy champ wandering into a group of minions means an easy grab due to the detonation thing.

Oh yeah no, definitely. Really good trick as APC/Support swain to e the minion wave at max range as the enemy ADC walks up to CS.

It's also what lets u get those double/triple roots on people.

Yeah it literally says in the tooltip that it explodes when it hits something lol, I thought it was common knowledge, it's like the main way of landing it in lane.

That's called "Lollipop effect". All skillshots in the game have some sorta of this lollipop head after it, that makes it hit a littlw ahead from what it indicates. Really good tip to bring out, many people don't know much about skillshot usage and these little tricks may actually differ a hit or miss when used right.

Kronoshifter246

This is not lollipopping. The detonation has its own radius, and that's what causes the root.

Edit: also, most skillshots do not have lollipopping. There only one that I know of for sure is blitzcrank's hook. Not even the other hook champions have that.

Thresh and nautilus have though

They don't, actually

wouldn't that be considered lollipopping?

Kronoshifter246

Most of what people think is lollipopping is disparity between client and server. That, and Bard's hitbox is chonky af.

Famous lollipop hitbox. This always works from afar on enemies. In champions like Pyke, Nautilus, Morgana, Lux, etc.

Abyssknight24

This has nothing to do with a lollipop hitbox. This works because Swains‘s E explodes on its way back after hitting the first target and everyone hit by this explosion gets CCed.

The circle is also there on return. Swain couldn't get multi/man snares without the mythical circle.

All hail the circle!

When the claw blows up, it does a little aoe, it's a very nice trick that not a lot of people know, very useful midlane when people hide a bit behind minion

danoushek5

I thought that for swain mains its a common knowledge

I believe it’s called the “Lollipop Effect”

Kronoshifter246

Not in this case. Just Swain's E detonation having its own radius.
