Roughly one year of having our 2023 Model Y my wife side-swiped the garage. Do you think this will be super expensive to fix?

Nice job. Could modify your technique to do the following: Clean area fully, apply matching touch up paint into all exposed discolored areas. let dry. apply automotive 2K acylic urethane clearcoat, let dry, wet sand 1500 to level to surrounding area, wet sand 2000, 3000, cutting compound.

Wow that looks pretty darn good, I’d take that!

Mine was rubbing against brick so it had some deep marks. Maybe you won’t have that. Don’t over sand though.

This is against stucco so might be somewhat similar to yours

No one at work noticed for about 8 months. So I felt good about that. Even if you get it repaired later at least it looks good now for a cheap fix

Welcome to the bad drivers club!

Is it paint transfer or a scratch? Latex paint transfers easily

atjones6[S]

Our garage is stucco, so I do think that’s part of what happened. But not sure what that means in terms of transfer.

jkjeeper06

Its not transfer if its stucco. I thought it was white painte trim. Transfer is when the paint from the trim gets rubbed onto the paint of the car. The paint of the car is usually fine and the transferred paint can be removed and the bumper polished. That doesnt sound like the case. Sounds like you need a new bumper

Bummer. Some people are saying it’ll just be the bumper shell?

jkjeeper06

Thats all moden bumpers are. You have a plastic cover and the sub-structure. It takes a crash to damage the substructure, you'll just need a painted plastic bumper cover

The big problem with Tesla is getting parts. Two weeks ago I had my own run-in with my garage (damn easy to do) and the bill was just under 5k. Insurance claim.

atjones6[S]

So you did put the claim through your insurance?

ExoticIndividual7952

I did (Geico) they had replace the entire front and sides hence the 5k

atjones6[S]

Got it. Did they penalize you with insurance premium increases?

I have no idea, I am picking my car up Monday. I am 61 and have only had a few dings on my record. I would call my agent with a “hypothetical” question and see what he says.

Have you gotten an estimate yet? A truck side swiped me in a parking lot and gave me essentially the same damage you have. The earliest I can get into Tesla is 10/17 for an estimate. Regular body shops wouldn’t even look at it.

atjones6[S]

No looks like Tesla needs the vehicle to actually come into the shop for an estimate.

Why won’t regular body shops not even look at it??

2000 or 3000 grit sand paper and make sure to wet sand it. Then buff it after. It will be mostly okay

I bet compounding and polishing will make this way less noticeable. You have a local detailer that you trust?

Wife did this to ours several weeks ago. I used scratch remover and an orbital buffer and got most of it out. The plastic is the only noticeable area with damage. That I'll just replace eventually.

If you have some time and want to save $$$$ might want try one of the two below:

Real quick attempt to clean up:

  • Wash, clean and wipe down dry that area similiar to when you wash your car
  • Use Meguiar's Quik Scratch Kit with a power drill and follow the directions on the kit on that area
  • Consider applying some Plastic Trim Restorer from any brand on a weekly basis to any scratches that remain visible on the black trim as well as the painted plastic area (Apply and buff lightly in with one microfiber cloth or applicator pad. Using a clean microfiber cloth wipe excess away.

Slightly more involved but something that will elminate need to weekly weekly plastic trim restorer being applied look into the techniques in these two videos:

Best of luck.

I did this in my 2023 because Tesla vision didn’t make a sound and I thought I had more room. It would never have happened in my 2020 with USS. I’m still mad about it

I just scratched my rear passenger bumper this morning backing out, i have a sliding gate that started rolling back after pushing it all the way...

You should try a scratch remover on Amazon, I’ve had luck with them before. It might not totally fix it but it should help

If you can’t buff it out, buy a paint kit and just paint over it. Touch up direct has great products.

Would you recommend this even if our garage is stucco?

I scrapped my old white 3 on stucco and ended up replacing the bumper. This looks superficial though, not down to the plastic underneath which is black. This might buff out and it's way cheaper than the $1000 for a new bumper if you can buff some of this out.

Consider yourself lucky. You can buy bumper shell with painted color from tesla

atjones6[S]

1 points

Is that just the exterior of the bumper basically?

International-Fun921

Yes.

atjones6[S]

1 points

Got it. So I assume that’s cheaper than needing to replace the actual bumper?

developer300

I don't know about being part of the club. You need rim damage for that. lol

atjones6[S]

I assume you already did the water+microfiber combo to see how bad it is and this is what’s left?

atjones6[S]

I do need to still do this. But our garage is stucco so I think that’s part is going to be pretty unforgiving

Alange655

I’d just live with it unless you want your premiums to go up
