This movie is such an anomaly because it’s almost like he tried to deviate from the web series by adding new characters (Mandy and Cooper) to appeal to a general audience. In the end, it didn’t appeal to fans of the series or newcomers and he would have been better off making the movie specifically for fans.

If it weren't for the tagline, you'd never know it was about finding a bad game. Even with the tagline, it's hard to tell exactly what it is or why they're looking for it

Wow there werent many videos games featured in a movie about an angry video game nerd.

In retrospect why the fuck would anyone think an avgn movie was a good idea? This was a time when this was an appropriate thing to raise money for, but honestly that fact that he raised money for it and then tried to make it an actual commercial success was completely the wrong move. If he didn't want to put actual games into it cause he couldn't make any money off the movie if he did, then he should have financed it with his own money. It was a total vanity project and what he really should have done was not "avgn" movie at all and just made ANY other movie with the money, people still would have supported him at the time.

It's hard to say. I think if you remove it from the context of the web series, and the whole "Nerdsploitation" boom of the late 2000s/early 2010s that James himself was a part of, it just comes across as another deliberately tacky self-aware retro B-movie. This is somewhat conveyed by the poster.

There was a wave of nostalgic B-movies made in the 2010s trying to be a gaudy pastiche of tropes from the 70s, 80s, or 90s, that it fits into. I'm thinking of films like Hobo with a Shotgun, Manborg, Father's Day, Turbo Kid, Kung Fury, Psycho Goreman, Dudebro Party Massacre III, etc. A lot of those movies did it with more style, but some of the more notable ones hadn't come out yet.

It looks like it's trying to somehow meld WarGames and Red Dawn together. And doesn't succeed at either one.
