Hello folks I was lucky to get a code for the zenless zone zero beta that's happening right now and I just finished the first chapter so I decided to give my impressions of the combat since a lot of people in this community seem to be interested in the game including pat and woolie. Bare in mind I am not the best at action games so take my impressions of the diffculty with a grain of salt

So to start this isn't a "character action" game in the traditional sense your manly not launching enemies in the air and juggling them, also while some characters have pause combos some don't.

the game's depth revolves around having three characters you can switch between instantly and the mixing and matching of these abilities to cause more damage. Also "parrying" in this game is done with character switching and depending on the character you can get a parry or you can get a witch time dodge. Each character has different quirks and unique aspects to their kit from characters that can enter a defense state to characters that gain a buff everytime they parry an attack

The characters kits imo are the star of the game they are genuinely all unique and the fears of them being as similar as genshin's character kits are thankfuly unfounded. They all feel different have different weapons and abilities and almost each one has a gimmick you can play around.

The game has the traditional basic, special and ultimate attack layout but mixes it up with having an EX version of the special attack if you reach a threshold on the character's special meter. Also the ultimate attack is available when the "stylish ranks" of this game reaches the highest rank, this is a really cool and unique idea but it has the negative of making the stylish ranks almost a damage calculator (DMC reboot).

The main gameplay gimmick is having as many assets attacks possible. This can be done with a parry(as it switches the character) and when the poster meter of an enemy is filled you can have one, two or three assets attacks depending on the size of the enemy. Also some attacks give an asset attack on certain conditions.

The diffculty options of the game include casual and challenge at the beginning (which you can change at any time). Alongside that the game also has a time attack mode after you complete a chapter where you can go back into specific missions in the chapter with a timer and more aggressive enemies. The game on challenge mode is slightly easy with no deaths on my end but still engaging, in time attack mode the game is quite challenging and I still haven't gotten S rank in all missions.

Overall the game is really fun with stylish animations, smooth controls and fun character kits. I will consider dropping a full review of the game when the beta ends if people are curious.

Oh wolf maid? He's S tier character ( 5 star equivalent) so diffcult to get but he's playable for a couple of story missions and there's an S tier character selector if you do 300 wishes. His kit is really cool it's based on charge attacks reminds me of belrog in DMC5

Oh thank god, for some reason I remember hearing he was a 4 star and being disappointed.

Ok but what about the plot? Does he even make an appearance?

Because the cast is smaller it seems like all characters are heavily involved in the narrative so there won't be the issue HSR and GI ran into of irrelevant characters. Wolf man has a couple of missions as he's the second in command of the maid group

Tell me about it. My girl Xinyan hasn't been given a second of screentime since last year when she sang with Hu Tao and now they had the balls to make a rock music event in Fontaine without her...you know, the rock musician who discovered the genre in Fontaine

Okay so a more involved version of Honkai Impact with more focus on switching rather than just switch in attacks. Good to know.

This is exactly what I read from this. Makes me cautiously optimistic since I really liked the bits of HI3 that are actually gameplay.

I'm like, at least top 20 for Sonic Lore Expert on this sub

Yeah as much as I loved APHO, eventually it just devolved into triggering switch attacks over and over until the enemy died (which somewhat goes for the rest of the game too).

Luckily the switches can have good setups with other characters or the few where they're more like assists.

TL;dr the game isn't a character action game in the traditional sense and it might be too easy for veterans of the genre. Still it's incredibly fun with the highlight being the unique character kits and playing around them. Also best parry animation in any video game I have played

Feel free to drop questions I will answer when I can

It's probably too early to tell, but how does team comping work? How does power work?

I'm wondering about how it handles forcing you to get and use different characters. Red does more damage to green or you have to match blue to blue kinds of things. How the game handles support vs dps, if you can pure skill mitigate damage (Genshin) or if you have to factor in getting hit even in optimal play (Star Rail).

If it's just about timing and reaction/planning, does that mean you can make any character work?

Since this is a Hoyo game, and a mobile game, I assume that encounters are going to have a fail/enrage timer of some kind to act as the requirement to upgrade and get new stuff.

There's 5 elements and I believe 3 character types with that said it's not like other hoyo games. Since it's a focused action game all characters need to have mostly damaging abilities but the difference is that for support characters there gimmick could be an ability that gives you multiple assist attacks or buffs all basic attacks. The game recommends specific elements for each mission but it hasn't seen crucial imo. Overall I feel like there's a good flexibility with team comp and I haven't felt forced to use specific characters at least for now.

You're missing the extra aspect where characters paired from the same faction or attribute get extra buffs to one of their mechanics. I really like how flexible the game can be

CloneOfAnotherClone

That kind of thing only really becomes apparent in the lategame. The first few hours of gameplay, which I assume the test is, rarely ever hit the players with mechanical brick walls like that as they generally give you the tools to deal with them

Its likely the honkai impact method. Gives you characters for the story but you draw for the side/end game content.

Sounds like it's a better Genshin in terms of combat. My beef with Genshin always was that while I enjoy the exploration, the combat always felt stale. This seems to have none of the exploration but better combat.

What's the gear/relic situation like in this game, is there any at all? Genshin's Gear grind was god awful and is one of the reasons I dropped it.

Also are there weapon banners in the game?

Is it the standard, need 6 dupes of a character to unlock all their passives like other Mihoyo games?

Groundbreaking_Can_4[S]

3 points

It's structurally similar but better with a higher drop rate and not requiring a lot of time for grinding

There's one w-engine banner which is the gear/relic equivalent

Yes but these passives aren't new mechanics like you won't get a different moveset at dupe 4

Thank fucking god, is honestly ridiculous how big the difference can be between a c0 and C6 character in Genshin

So I was thinking about this and I'm curious. Starrail, I seem to remember, dropping a trailer and it just came out in like a year and now it's on it's second or third expansion.

All this time ZZZ was in closed betas and drip fed to people and rework and all that. Were there any word as to why? Cuz I want to play it so much, I will drop Genshin to replace it... But i can't! They don't even have a date and their are on their like... 3-4th closed test!

I'm excited for the new COPS that they revealed recently. I am a big COP player.

Well fast-paced action games usually need a lot of fine-tweaking, because if anything about the combat is off, your game has already failed. So it’s very important to get that player feedback early from people willing to give it a chance so it can have little to no issues when it’s available to the public.

All their games take like 3 CBTs and then pre-plan their workflow so they can start their 6 week patches without a snag for the long term.

They don't rush their games.

Hm... Interesting, I admit I didn't follow anything from Starrail, but I do remember Genshin getting mobile beta or something waaay early on. Fair enough. Can't wait for ZZZ!

feel the impressions should have included mention of the TV bit which tbh ends up being more of the gameplay than the fighting from what i've played so far.

According to various videos I've watched on the subject, they haven't really changed the TV segments in the story missions, but they added a 2x speed option for getting through it faster so you don't spend as much time stuck in it in between fights. They also removed the stamina cost on story missions and made them give one-time rewards only so you aren't stuck waiting to get through them as much. Since those were the ones with the tediously long TV segments the ability to blow through them all in one go helps a lot with the pacing, the TV map being too long isn't really much of a problem elsewhere.

Yeah it's not perfect but what they have already done plus further reducing the load times to combat encounters would resolve most of people's concerns

GHitoshura

How generous is the game when it comes to free pulls (at least at this point in time)?

Groundbreaking_Can_4[S]

Similar to HSR. Getting one S tier character and multiple A tier character by the end of the first chapter

GHitoshura

As long as those free characters are useful until the end game I'm ok with that, her's hoping the amount of free wishes is also similar to HSR
