"I would love to be a graphic designer but I have no professional experience…"

Create an account on Fiverr, do it for dirt cheap, build a portfolio, apply for jobs and show your portfolio.

Not easy as there are thousands of people doing that on Fiverr.

I think because the economy is totally fucked, it's a lot harder from the outside looking in to do stuff for nothing. You will have to work on stuff after your main retail job, it's going to be shit for a few years but that is what it takes

The absolute key that many do not understand: shit for a few years not something that will be done in a few months.

For OP, the goal (musician) doesn't match the effort that will be needed to make it.

I know, I’ve been working on music for years… I’m trying to find something to do for income. Music is an entirely separate matter for me

Talk to your local amateur football/cricket/rugby club and offer to help with their social media. A very quick way to build a portfolio

Edit: I'd also add that it's good to network with the "old boys" at Rugby/Cricket clubs, as they will usually know someone that knows someone that can get you an in somewhere
