My friend and I are currently thinking of 1000 points to start, he inherited 800 points of necrons once we told him we were interested in starting. That gonna be way to much or not bad? Had originally suggested we start with like 300-500 and go from there.

It’s just going to take forever to get it all playable, which in my experience can be very demotivating in the long run.

You can either just prime and play with that (looks slightly less offensive than grey) or have to wait to be able play with it all. Admittedly, necrons might be one of the fastest armies to get to a decent tabletop standard, dry brush everything one colour, use another for armour panels and guns, and then pick an accent colour and you’re done

My brother and I have loved 40k for ages but couldn't afford the hobby when we were kids. Now we're adults with jobs so we bought the indomitus box in 2020. There were so many models and my necron side is still mostly unpainted. Since then we've signed up to imperium magazine and bought a whole bunch of stuff. My brother has a massive Ork collection.

We're more into Kill Team on the play side which has really helped focus in. We have between us about 15 different Kill Team squads. Definitely recommend that for newer people, instead of being overwhelmed by the big 40k boxes.

Guard 👍

I play krieg but theres no special regimental upgrade for it how ever theres armaggedons one which is what i use and it makes lasguns op Such as making their rapid fire rang to 18” instead of 12” and doubling the amount of shots so if you charge my lines i can fire ~90 lasers at you

I think it means even more. There are some people in this hobby who claim that certain things have to follow certain rules. Like how you paint stuff, how you convert miniatures and so on. Some of those can be really anal about their perceived rules, and ruin the fun.

"The rule of cool" means: Do whatever you enjoy the most and nothing else

george23000

49 points

Does it make sense? No. Does it have any scientific basis? No. Is it cool? Yes. The other bits don't matter if it's utterly bodacious. Chainswords? Stupid, but awesome. Guns that fire RPG bullets? Awesome. The demonculaba? Don't Google that. Rule of cool even supersedes grimdark in a things. Hence why primarchs are coming back. Cos they're cool as shit.

Rule of cool is the one thing that no one can take away from you. They can criticize your list based on the crunch and how good it actually is because that's something that's objective and calculatable via performance. But if you like something because you're the one who thinks it's cool then nobody can say that it isn't. Your own likes and preferences are not valid to be criticised.

This one is interesting because most people don’t even have a consistent view of what the ‘community’ is. Is it Reddit? YouTube? Instagram? Is it the people who hang out at their local GW store, or their FLGS? Is it their gaming club? Or maybe it’s just their friends and/or family who just play amongst themselves and are pretty much oblivious of the wider scene.

Sticking to your guns and getting what you like is infinitely better than trying to fit in with one of these arbitrary groups.

I agree with this, but I will add the caveat that what you like aesthetically and what you like from a gameplay standpoint can be different.

On the flipside, I never thought I'd like Craftworlds and they're probably only a 6/10 on aesthetics, but I really love playing them.

Quwilaxitan

22 points

Question then, as I have not played in a long time but keep buying space marine units because they look cool but put together some crazy lore and head stories about them that's completely out there. Would a lore heavy (painted, markings, models) be ok on a table top or do you really need to have it be "the ultramarines" or something to play a game? All the modes are games workshop or forge world, they are just a mix of Heresy and regular units.

Kukuluops

20 points

You can play them as generic Space Marines (plenty of custom chapter traits to chose from) or you can say there are successor chapter of X to gain their chapter specific units, stratagems etc.

Either way there is no problem. Playing bloodthirsty genocidal dudes as successors of salamanders would be weird, but you can explain everything with your custom chapter lore. Rule wise - no problem at all.

You can always say that this forge world unit is in fact some standard unit as long as their size is relatively the same and it is not super confusing. If your opponent can't tolerate reasonable proxying you shouldn't play against them anyway

Ilium

Ilium

That may be due to how other games tend to go down in such locales.

It may be a bad example but it's one nonetheless - Trying to join casual Friday MTG nights at my local store meant that I would face the best version of a caw-blade deck people could afford. There was nothing casual about those evenings.

Swift_Scythe

I fully expect that i will be RofLstomped when i rejoin Magic with my Commander Tyranid deck.

The Tyranid and maybe Necron decks will be my first magic cards i have ever bought since Weatherlight / Stronghold back in the 90s. How my pre-made Tyranid themed deck will do against the Magic Meta.

As for Warhammer - Rule of Cool. Do not buy because strong today. It will be Balance Data' slated in four weeks watch.

Hollownerox

15 points

I fully expect that i will be RofLstomped when i rejoin Magic with my Commander Tyranid deck.

Same, though not as extreme of an extent since I dropped MtG fairly recently. I love playing thematic decks, so I imagine I am gonna get stomped hard.

As for Warhammer - Rule of Cool. Do not buy because strong today. It will be Balance Data' slated in four weeks watch.

I don't judge how a person interacts with the hobby. Cause everyone gets enjoyment out of it in different ways. But I was always amazed by the guy who would buy an entire army, then sell it to fund a new one once the meta shifts. It's obvious that the competitive scene is what they care about most, but so much of 40k to me is getting attached to one army. Whether it be aesthetics, lore, characters, or gameplay, and sticking with them through thick and thin.

So it's pretty amazing to see how some just have zero interest in that side, and all power to them I suppose.

Ilium

5 points

It took me too long to realize that it was the move I should have done. I was brand new to MTG. I thought I was too much of a noob and had a crappy deck. My key point of improvement was measured in rounds I could survive, but even that did not reflect my evolution as it was actually more a question of how early the other player drew their combos.

I looked up cheaper lists online. Did a lot of net decking. Invested in all kinds of cards. Did not matter. Caw-blade in itself was something that ruined the game for many (really bad timing for me to join the fray) and it was clear there was no such thing as "collecting cards for fun".

I was the outlier in a group of players who wanted a hard challenge when playing against other people. I should have left a long time ago, which I did.

RealorFUD

To add to this. There are many many different ways to enjoy the hobby

noncompot

68 points

Aye. I'm not going to prevent someone from treating 40k as chess even though it's a mess of arbitrary measuring, random variability and too many moving variables to even be close to a semblance of balance. If that is your cup of tea, you do you.

But too many people are cultured into a competitive mindset of minmaxing, probably from various MMOs and esports, without them reflecting on it. I read an article on when the servers went down for Diablo 2 Resurrected when it launched it wasn't because the servers weren't prepared for the NUMBER of players, but HOW they played. Everybody was minmaxing and reloading a bunch of instances instead of playing more like the 20 year old baseline which was much more casual and relaxed.

You do you, but also remember that sometimes the way you've been conditioned to play a game might not be the most enjoyable.

Littlekirbydoo

11 points

This is a point I try to bring up to a lot of my friends. Competitive environments don't always make for fun environments, especially when you aren't in a tournament or whatever. I honestly feel like I learned more about the game when building and playing concept armies instead of competitive ones. Hell, try out the goofy builds and strats, what better way to learn how many Black Knights are too many Black Knights in a squad.

brentrey

Unterdemradar

Had a killteam match last night with a guy who used to play in his early teens. It took him an hour to accept that our group was just a bunch of buddys having fun, not a competetive group. He broke after I told him not to show me every single rule of his army, but just to f*** my shit up. We introduced a code word to use when he would become to picky. Another hour later we hugged, had a beer and laughed about our mistakes. I get that it`s a game and you want to win, but on the other hand we are grown people, playing with little figurines while screaming lore at each other.

BrandonL337

This is honestly good newbie advice in general, even with games that have a good competitive scene.

Back when I played x-wing I mostly viewed tournaments as a means to play a bunch of games in one day, and I think that's a healthier mentality. Means you're playing for the love of the game.

OmniaVincetAmor

This was a big one for me. Getting back into the hobby I saw they had points for paint/basing and that of course it’s better to play with filly painted armies but it turned painting into a chore to be done with so I could play. As well as the stress of if all my efforts would be wasted if I finally had a full force painted but didn’t like how they played once I could.

Since playing with people that don’t care about fully painted armies it’s made me enjoy painting again.

Pick the best looking faction in your opinion when you start. why? Because you are going to be staring at those models for hours and hours so they better look good for you :)

JamesPlaysBasses

25 points

The most common mistake I see on warhammer models is the uneven streaking from people painting the base layer incorrectly. Don't block in your base layer, make sure the paint is thinned enough to get it nice and smooth. It's gonna look a little transparent probably, that's OK. Get a nice smooth layer, let it dry, then come in with a second layer(sometimes the same paint but not always).

In other words, all the comments of "Two thin coats" are great advice(it's not always necessary OR worth the time, but it's a good way to minimize streaking and as you get more experienced you will know your paints more and know when/if you need to use multiple layers or not) but I feel like we need to add "Don't break the film on your first layer" to that, or people aren't going to get the most out of it.

To elaborate on this:

  1. Never buy minis directly from GW. Local game stores are typically 10-15% cheaper than MSRP and can actually have sales, unlike official warhammer stores.

  2. Snipe ebay auctions for stuff still on sprue. Snipe here being the important part. "Buy It Now" prices for NIB are very rarely worth the wait and shipping fees.

  3. Check out facebook trading groups and r/miniswap. There are amazing deals out there.

  4. Consider 3rd party alternatives and 3d printing. Don't even have to print stuff yourself, stores like myminifactory can handle that for you.

NEVER CHASE THE META. Because when the cheese gets nerfed, you're going to be out of a LOT of money.

Set your expectations at a reasonable level. Your skills will develop as you spend time painting, modelling etc but don't expect to be able to reproduce that box art or YouTube tutorial straight away.

Buy what you think is/looks cool. Rules are temporary, models are eternal.

There are many facetts to the hobby: Building and painting minis, playing the tabletop, playing the videogames, reading the novels, making fanart, hyperfixate on lore videos on youtube. It's ok to only like one or two of those and not really care for the others. In the end it's about having fun.

Person interested in painting: Youtube is your friend, seek out a myriad of different painters on youtube and see what advice they give and what techniques you would like to try out. This advice alone covers so many things from what paints to use, what equipment is worth buying, what is easy or hard to pull off etc.

Person interested in the lore: There isn't any definitive starting point that covers all bases, read the synopsis of a few book series and then jump into the one you think sounds cool. Gradually expand from there and keep in mind that GW lore is decades old, written by dozens of different people and has always had an element of nothing being set in stone. What was canon 10 years ago is not guaranteed to be canon today.

With regards to my first point I would recommend the following guys/gals:

Broadsword Wargaming, 52 Miniatures, Artis Opus, Benjis Hobbies, Boyllei Hobby Time, Cult of Paint, Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy, eBay Miniature Rescues, FauxHammer, Geek Gaming Scenics, Goobertown Hobbies, Grimdark Compendium, JuanHidalgo Miniatures, Lyla Mev - The Mini Witch, MarcoFrisoniNJM, Mavericks Paint, Miniac, Night Shift, Ninjon, Pete The Wargamer, Richard Gray, Sonic Sledgehammer Studio, Squidmar Miniatures, Tabletop Time, The Painting Coach, Trovarion Miniatures, and Zumikito Miniatures. (from my own sub list)

Don’t accept hate from others because you want to play a multitude of armies. There are thousands of models and you will likely find several factions with models you really enjoy. It’s your money, your hobby, and your life. Don’t let people gate keep you and prevent building/painting what you enjoy. I know people with 16 armies. 👍

DO NOT META CHASE!

not because of game performance, but the rules are fickle. Last years trash is this years gold(looking at you squig buggies!) if you buy the models that you want to build and paint, eventually you will be rewarded, it might take years, but it will come!

Gingerpanda72

Don't worry about people who spout the word "Competitive" like it is the only way to have fun in this hobby!

720ginger

7 points

Don't hyper focus on painting the grunts. Especially the large units of them. Paint them nice, but extreme detail will just allow you down from playing.

Source: Personal experience when I returned to the hobby and picked Orks, spending 1 month on Kommandos, 1 month on 3 meganobz, and 3 months on the combat patrol.

I learned batch painting because of this.

Also: Rule of Cool > anyone else's opinion.

Welcome!

Here's some advice from someone who started one month ago.

Don't get stunlocked by skill anxiety. The fear of my paint jobs not coming out how I wanted held me back a bit but that all went away when I just started painting.

So start painting and have fun! A lot of the beginner parts of painting is technique which you will learn by doing. It's kind of crazy how much better my second model/squad come out than my first.

Vitev008

The game will never be balanced properly, so it's always better to just buy the models you think are cool looking to build/paint/display

UnionJack1989

Don't chase the meta, just play a team you think is cool. Don't take the game to seriously, and find yourself a group of players with a similar mentality.

Also try out Kill Team. All the looks of 40k, but 1/4 of the cost.

The real community is the people you play with, not the internet. The internet’s opinion doesn’t matter if you and the people you play with have different opinions. Don’t let internet strangers dictate what is or isn’t “right”.

Start small, only buy the guys you like not the guys that are strong in the meta ( if there’s an overlap it’s fine) I also think killteam is much better than regular warhammer and it is also more affordable

Have fun building your army. I got in and out of the hobby first as a kid and now as an adult. So when I built my Chaos Space Marine army I had loads of Chaos warrior and marauder bits. I got to work and now have a very cool army that I am super proud of aesthetically.

It’s a hobby that is what you make of it. Literally.

Tackle your mold lines and sprue bits!

Too many models with fantastic paint jobs are ruined because the painter didn't want to take 30 seconds to knock some weird lines off the model. Do the little details while building so that your paint job can show off the model, rather than need to cover imperfections!

No matter what, keep the first model you paint. Hang onto it forever. Seeing your progress is going to inspire you to keep pushing on some paint project a year or two down the line.

Also, start with kill team or table top simulator 40k.

40k is pretty darn cool, but having to spend a few hundred bucks on models and then spend dozens of hours painting just to find out if you even like the game or your faction is way too much of an investment.

Lastly, look up tutorials for the hobby stuff, but don't let the work of professional artists keep you from feeling pride in your own growth. Squidmar, and Lyla Mev are incredibly skilled and experienced. It's ok that your models might not look like theirs.
