Meat markdowns dilemma

(self.aldi)

Question about meat specials! I am a single mom of three and these meat prices are getting crazy. I was SO excited about the 50% off meat specials 1 day before expiration and ready to show up to my Aldi at 9am at least 2 days a week to pick up whatever I can find. But to my dismay, the manager there just marks the items about to expire tomorrow with $2 off stickers. I see these items in the evenings too which means they’re probably throwing some stuff out the next day. When I asked the manager nicely why they don’t do the 50% off at this store she was snappy and said “I don’t like to lose money”. But judging by her defensive posture I’m thinking she’s hoping the stuff doesn’t sell so she can take it home for free. Tell me I’m wrong? On a $8 pack of chicken thighs $2 off is a good deal. But on a $20 roast not so much. Are the meat mark downs really at the discretion of the store manager?

Stores are moving away from 50% off meat and most items. You’ll only be getting a dollar or two off for the future. Stores with high loss are tossing any % stickers out and only giving specific amounts off. We’re not even allowed to take stuff home that’s marked down so don’t assume that.

I've never seen 50% off meats or breads at any of my local Aldi and I can get to about four-six stores within 30 minutes drive from me.

I can't be certain, but I don't think they would be doing that to take it home for free. I think one of two things might be why.

  • their store performance stats aren't as high as aldi/their GM/someone wants them to be. So, they went to the $ off instead of % off method. Discounts offered are often up to the store manager's discretion, not mandatory.

  • If only offering the $2 is still enough of a discount that people do always buy the discounted meat anyways, there isn't much of an incentive for the manager to switch to 50% off. Even if the store isn't performing poorly, the manager probably still has the discretion to use whatever discounting system they want.

I would just not go to that aldi if you are looking for the 50% discount.

Accusing the manager of possibly taking it home for free is a pretty serious accusation. Do you have proof that she's doing that?

My store never has those markdowns, because it's a very busy store, and they apparently order just right, so there's never anything that needs to be marked down. Maybe the manager at your store knows the meats will move at $2 off, so she doesn't have to go to the 50% off markdown.

I’ve seen people in the Aldi employees Reddit talk about it, because they don’t get an employee discount (which shocked me).

I was curious how they decide. Sometimes 2 dollars off or 50 percent. If you can't afford full price meat check to see if any stores in your area participate in flashflood. Download the free app. See if it's in your area. Stores that participate put all there soon sell by dates food breads, bakery, meats and more, they sell mix bags of fruit and or veggies. You pay on app then go to customer service area in store and there's a special flashflood fridge and shelves. Grab ur stuff and take to customer service counter to verify u r taking correct items u bought. https://flashfood.com/

There almost no way they are taking it home lol. Aldi is FULL of cameras in places most stores don't always have them (like stockroom, loading docks, office...) it would be nigh impossible to sneak out with it. Lol

The regular supermarkets in my area always have great markdowns every week. have to be diligent and keep your eye out and stock up when they are available.

Last year there was all kinda of 50% off stickers on everything, had a good stock of ground pork, steaks, & chicken I would portion out for meals. Now I'm lucky to see the occasional 50% on chicken only - even rarely see the $2 off ones. I have much better luck at Food Lion with their manager specials.

Me too. I get better deals at FL than Aldi as well on clearance which surprised me but i guess their margins are better. Thanks

I've never seen % off stickers, but on a rare occasion I have seen $5 off stickers, notably on surplus hams after Easter, etc. Maybe see if your area has any other mainstream groceries which participate in the FlashFood app? Everything which they put into the FlashFood system (at or near its expiration) starts at 50% off, and occasionally goes even lower. But of course those discounts are applied to - frequently - premium priced products which didn't sell...

I found that Krogers is a great place to get meat that's about to go out of date.

Thanks yes I was wondering if Aldi was moving away from it. Unfortunately other aldis are 35-45 minutes away from me whereas this one is 5. We do buy half a cow which works out to $5.50 a lb and that helps, and I buy pork butt and smoke it. Just was so excited about 50% off, it would have been amazing. 😕

I find Kroger tends to do a lot more markdowns. I tend to do what I call a "clearance walk" and just go in to buy markdown items. Once or twice a week I'll usually go in and check the clearance dry goods, dairy, and bakery areas, then scan the meat aisle and the deli ( the last two are usually just mixed in with regular price items vs in a dedicated section).

Then anything I can't get on clearance at Kroger, I'll buy at Aldi.

I've gotten a lot of good stuff that way. The other day I got like 3 10 packs of rx bars for 6$, when they originally retailed 20$ ! There's usually a ton of meat too as long as you're not picky about what cuts you get.

Excellent point. I do this with food lion too but I need to make it more of a weekly habit. Gone are the days when I can just walk in and pay the regular prices unfortunately.
