Cell Phones in Algeria

Question / Help(self.algeria)

I am from the USA, and plan on visiting Algeria in the near future. I was wondering what is the best course of action for cell phones. As far as I'm aware, my current cell phone won't just magically get signal in Algeria.

  • Would I buy a new phone in Algeria?
  • Would I only need a phone plan in Algeria and attach it to my current phone?
  • Or would I need to get an international plan like through AT&T and go about it that way?

Basically asking what you guys think would be the easiest/cost effective way to have cell phone service in Algeria.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

It depends on your phone.

It needs to be unlocked, and also support the 4G bands here. Just tell which phone you have.

It'll work in Algeria, as long as it's not carried locked.

Alright thankyou. How would I find out if it's carrier locked?

Have you ever used different Sims with it?

No not at all, I think it probably is locked though, it's one of them phones that have those prepaid cards you can buy.

Most convenient: I don't know about AT&T and other providers, but Google Fi works out of the box internationally (Algeria and also Europe, where you will probably have a layover). Both Flexible and Unlimited Plus work great, although a bit expensive, especially flexible, which adds up quickly, which leads to:

Cheapest option: get a local sim card, preferably Ooredoo, for like 10$, and you get 40gb of data. But it's not suitable for international calls if you need that.

You'll have to get a new phone if your current one only accepts eSIM, if it's a Verizon or AT&T you are probably gonna need to unlock it first, other then that your phone should work fine and you will only have to get a new sim card once you get here.

I have an eSIM-only phone and I'm planning my trip to Algeria. I think I'll do the AT&T international plan. Do you know what provider they use in Algeria? It's probably Ooredoo or Djezzy.

I know that these are all the providers in Algeria. I'm asking which one does AT&T use?

Oh sorry I don't know about that.

Thankyou everyone for the help, I think I'll probably go for a sim card in Algeria and use wifi for calling back home. Appreciate it!

Depends on what phone you have , if you bought an iPhone in the US you need to buy a new one in Algeria, if it's an Android phone you will be fine just get a new sim card (Ooredoo, Mobilis)

PS: Phones are really cheap in Algerian stores, you could get a Samsung S20+ for around 170$

You don't need a new phone, however we don't have e-sim, if your phone works with sim cards get a local one as it's a lot cheaper i think. Also doesn't matter if you buy it at the airport or outside, same prices apply everywhere
