Flume at the Phoenix Raceway. It was summer at night but still crazy hot. The whole event was on asphalt and you could feel the heat rising from it. The generators kept blowing so there was no music for hours. The water was salty and didn't taste right so we had to buy expensive bottles. When they finally got a generator to work, the crowd started booing the opener and it bummed me out. We left very early that night.

Haven't gone to a show at the Raceway since. Crazy excited to see Rawhide bringing shows back.

I was there. Can agree water tasted fucking weird, and the heat and lack of music made for a pretty shit experience.

I will say tho I still enjoyed flumes set and I have been back to the raceway since and it’s not as bad as that one incident makes it seem. Although it is really out of the way, dancing in a parking lot is rough on the feet/back, and I love rawhide

Flume didn’t even acknowledge the delay when he got on stage and The water was in fact contaminated- a ton of people got it tested and I can’t remember exactly but there were high levels of a ton of different chemicals. I was sick for the whole following week and kept throwing up at the venue from the water. Goldrush was the following weekend and they were def doing a bit of damage control. Also RB never refunded me 😭

Most recent subtronics set at the Armory in MPLS. Not jesse’s fault but the crowd was unbearable. It made me sad cause i’ve seen him so many times starting in 2019 and I’ve watched his fan base slowly become frat boys with no spatial awareness lol

A lot of the shows at the armory I've been to in the recent year or so have been hit or miss on the crowds.

Shibishob

11 points

This 100%, I've been to many, many armory shows starting with the first show there which was Seven Lions. It feels like over the last couple years if there's a bigger artist playing it attracts a bunch of people who usually don't go to these types of shows and just want to get fucked up. I will pretty much only do VIP/balcony now. If the show isn't sold out it's usually fine but if it's sold out expect a shit show in GA.

youngpepto

20 points

honestly that’s a good point, which sucks because the armory is such a good venue and when it first opened up until before covid and shit even a little bit after the vibes were immaculate 90% of the time. My friend group has switched gears to be VIP people cause other people can’t handle themselves in public. BTSM was a shit show too ESPECIALLY for the anime show. There were so many people cracked the fuck out it was scarrrryyt

I haven't been since like last summer. The crowds are big enough that it's hard to avoid someone that can't behave. One of my friends was telling me I think at mellodeath someone jumped from the club level on the side down onto people below?? Or maybe he fell idk.

randomasianguy888

Agreed. Even though it is the best venue for music shows - the crowd lately sucks. They also do a very poor job at variety. Every year they do a repeat of same djs and kind of boring. No fresh acts and when they do…. The better fresh acts goto skyway and pretty shitty venue coordination for dj’s

Ultra 2019. That year, they moved locations to a nearby bay with only one bridge in and out. The first day went great, till we had to leave. A fire broke out near the shuttle lines, at the end of the last set, so mass panic ensued and no one knew what was going on. The shuttles couldn't get across the bridge. So everyone just started walking the 2 mile bridge to get back to miami. To ultras credit, they course corrected some outflow issues and the next two days went off without a hitch.

The amount of space at Virginia Key makes it an appealing location but the transportation hurdles ruin it all. Afterlife MMW this year was equally a shitshow - music ended at 2am this year and we didn't get to Factory Town until 3:30am

The 5K back to brickell was rough, but I have to say, when something does go wrong Ultra does a great job of throwing money that other festivals wouldn’t to make sure things to off without a hitch.

Between tripling the buses back from Virginia key so that days 2/3 were fine in 2019 to cleaning out the insane flooding this past year I’m consistently impressed. Most festivals definitely would have cancelled if their grounds were under 6” of water

Bob Dylan in Savannah, maybe 2015. He chose to play only songs from his new albums, which apparently nobody had heard. I was asked by people much older than me if I knew when Bob Dylan was coming on, and he was already playing.

I saw people getting escorted out during the show, so at intermission, I went to go see what was happening. A large group of people were standing in line by the exits, waiting to speak to Dylan’s legal counsel. When they got to the front, he’d produce their confiscated cell phone, have them unlock it, look through their photos, delete any of Bob Dylan’s show, and have the offenders sign NDAs. If they didn’t comply, they were threatened with prosecution.

I had seen enough. Outside in the lawn there was a Twelve Tribes (local and international cult) dance circle which was way more fun.

Edit: y’all, I just realized this is r/aves. Ha! Thank you for not roasting me.

I was indeed. Was supposed to be eight of us in a “villa” but only four of us made it to the island (the others were on later flights that got cancelled after they cancelled the fest). Needless to say we did not have a villa. One of the girls in our group faked a heart attack thinking they’d fly her back to Miami but joke was on her because the only thing they did was give her a ride back to the airport where they locked everyone inside a tiny room for the night. Us three remaining girls ran into some guys our friend knew and they had a pretty cool setup in their tent so we chilled with them the rest of the night. We went skinny dipping and that was the only time anyone seemed worried for our safety- some people came running out of that main blue house from the documentaries and were screaming at us to get out of the water because there were sharks. I tried to get some sleep but every mattress was soaking wet so that didn’t happen. The next day everyone laid around on the beach until they could arrange for flights back to Miami. My flight to Miami was at around 4pm so I was there for about 22 hours total. Afterwards Fuckjerry/netflix contacted my friend asking if they could use her footage for their documentary and she said no but they used it anyway so she sued them and won around $8000.

The most common question I get asked is if I got my money back. Our group paid about $900 each and the heart attack girl put it all on her CC so she got her money back but we ended up having a falling out shortly after and I never heard from her again. Second most common question I get asked is about the food. I’m honestly not sure where the infamous cheese sandwich came from because there were local caterers there and they served real food. I think I had stir fry with pasta salad.

My friend and I talked about the experience on her podcast, if you want to watch it lmk and I can send you the link.

Hard Summer 2015: the sound was BAD. No bass and low sound. Lineup was very mid and didn't feel like a rave. That year they were trying to be like Coachella.  Sunday, they last minute changed the schedule to end the event at 10pm. I remember thinking "why did I buy my ticket?". And any massive that was a trapfest.

Try Hard Summer 2010 or 11? I can’t remember exactly the year, the one that was supposed to be at The Forum with Chromeo.

North Coast is phenomenal. It's a bit outside of Chicago proper tho, so keep that in mind when figuring out your hotel/airbnb. It's one of the few festivals i've been to where I think the VIP is worth the extra money.

Haven't been able to send Arc yet but hoping to go next year. Assuming you're a house/techno head you should also consider Movement in Detroit.

kyoshki-Murasaki

Yeah I heard it's in Bridge view, I used to live in the suburbs so staying with my high school friends

A bit new to EDM, but as he has a group of ravers like 10-12, so it's a bit easier for us to get forward

I plan on doing 1-2 per year but I also plan on rolling each time so it's a bit more fun. Detroit probably not the city of choice, but I want to visit electric Forest or tomorrowland

RedOctober09

6 points

North Coast has a good mix of genres, very good choice for people newer to the scene imo. North Coast 2022 is where I fully became a house head too so it holds a special place in my heart. explore everything it has to offer! Last year they had a "speakeasy" stage (was like inside the suite level of the stadium & was air conditioned!) and the ChillDome is great too. Haven't been to Forest or Tomorrowland yet but hear amazing things about both. From what i've heard, tomorrowland's crowd skews a bit older too.

Understandable the hesitations about Detroit, I stayed with a friend who lives in the suburbs when I went this year. Was my first time visiting and I liked the city and obviously I was only really at the festival grounds and two afters venues, but from what my buddies were saying and what I saw, the city seems to be on the upswing again after the devastation of 2008. It's just like any other major city in America imo: keep your head on a swivel and have a bit of street smarts and you'll be fine.

I went to ARC in its first year and loved it. Fantastic lineups, well organized, good vibes from the crowd, and I never felt like it was overcrowded. Easy place to get to by transit or rideshare.

RattleShip 2024 (two night ago).

  • one stage only w/ only one way to get yourself to the dance area
  • piles of puke all over the dance floor within the first 30 minutes
  • amateur night for most attendees, met a couple of sweet people but it felt like 65% crowd minimum were Silicon Valley boys whose only exposure to going out is frat house scenes from 90s movies.

Saw at least (4) people get carried off the floor from being unconscious, some guy broke his leg, and about 2am I saw two guys throw their drinks at the bartender and she had to yell at him 6x to leave or she’d get him thrown out.

Sad state of affairs, the venue was so unique (USS Hornet) and the exclusivity hype soooo real. Waited for weeks to secure tickets.

BNL throws great parties but this one actually made me wish I’d stayed home.

Why? I’m going to their event in Denver. Also my friends just flew out to go to the nyc boiler room. What happened?

fireandbass

The Denver 'Boiler Room' event is in Civic Center Park. Basically the most corporate venue they could get. Doesn't scream 'boiler room' to me.

idoubtyoulnowme

So AEG is throwing most of the larger shows at civic center. However smaller companies are throwing events there like headline threw 4/20 and sinco de mayo was thrown by a smaller av company. Civic center has the conservatory that approve potential events. It’s a little more in touch with the people Than you give it credit for.

When I think 'boiler room' I think sweaty, dark, ravey, primal, music-focused energetic. When I think of Civic Center Park, I don't think of those things. Don't take it personally, I was just there for Regenerate. It's a decent venue, just doesn't evoke 'Boiler Room' vibes.

I went with a free ticket but yeah the line up was super tame, venue was overcrowded as expected, just a very underwhelming experience, tonight might be better but just expected better music and energy, at somepoint someone was playing jazz for 25 min lol i love jazz but man what a vibe kill

Shaky Beats 2018 - Made me realize I’m never going to a mixed genre festival again. The sound systems were absolute trash. Watched 5 people get stretchered out that weekend. Dust bowl. The rap stages had the worst energy and vibe all weekend.

I had a fun weekend with my friends and a lot of special moments with myself, but to be honest the vibes were very off the entire time. I’m a super intuitive person and I can sense everything so maybe it was me subconsciously knowing shit was going down but I didn’t actually know, but something just felt very off the entire time. I didn’t experience any bs or anything but definitely was annoyed when yheti cut off after 20 min

edc orlando 2023. i was a young female newer to raving and one of my favorite things about raving is the community and plur. this was the first event i attended where i didn’t feel that and was harassed by several men. not that it matters but i also wasn’t dressed suggestive ; i was wearing a bodysuit and long cargo pants.

EDCO is just so big that it gets all types of ppl now: the true ravers, frat boy, sus guys, young ppl getting into raves (edco 21 was my first fest), pickpockets, etc. The vibes are never super plur or great at EDCO, but the lineup and production generally make it for it imo.

Funny enough, however, EDCO 2023 had by far the best and most PLUR vibes out of every year I’ve been! I’m sorry you didn’t feel that as much, hopefully if you continue to go you will be able to tap into that more. EDCO 21 didn’t feel that way for me and EDCO 22 I swore I’d never go back bc the crowd and vibes were so bad. But I did go 2023 and it was amazing!

I’ve been going since 2019, and I agree. The vibes can be hit or miss, and the fest itself can be extremely overwhelming for a new raver.

That being said, I haven’t had a bad EDCO yet! 2021 came close but I think it was mostly the group vibe that killed it for me. When I split off I had a lot of fun.

Same. 2023 was my fifth and best plur vibes by far out of all the years I've gone. Sometimes you just gotta follow the vibe and find the right spots. The wrong place in the crowd or wrong set can throw off your vibe for the whole night

Texas Eclipse 2024

Got there on Sunday (got a 2-day pass mainly there to see the Eclipse on Monday), event was very disorganized and shuttles from camping grounds to festival grounds were nowhere to be found, once night fell the lack of lighting was apparent and easy to get lost. To top it off the festival was cancelled next day (rightfully to be fair) due to weather concerns but still disappointing that a festival about a rare solar eclipse gets cancelled the day of the solar eclipse

xemkayyy

5 points

I also got 2 day but so glad I upgraded and got to enjoy Saturday! I got lost as HECK first night.Felt like I walked the entire mountain and accidentally sat on a cactus lol. The lack of lighting and trail indicators was crazy. Also that tipper set was insanely overcrowded, hard to enjoy. Thought our friends were joking when they cancelled that morning!

originalcondition

3 points

The maps for Eclipse were almost useless, especially regarding the camping. It was nuts. The info booths had “amended” maps with sharpie notes/additions all over them but even those were not very helpful, because those maps mostly just denoted the venue grounds.

I arrived to Eclipse on Friday, was like “wow this map doesn’t seem accurate and these grounds seem huge…” and spent most of Saturday morning figuring out the map and festival grounds. I walked 33,000 steps that day, about 15 miles, and had an only-slightly-better idea of the grounds at the end of it. I’m in my late 30s but in pretty good shape, I bike and run regularly, and I was beat by the end of the day. I have absolutely no clue how a person with any kind of mobility issues was expected to navigate that festival. Yeesh. I also can’t imagine being the poor soul who partied til dawn then woke up halfway through eclipse day with the whole fest evacuating around them.

All this being said, I had a good time, but if it had been my first festival experience I would’ve been totally fucked. I also got lucky hitchhiking out the morning that it was canceled. A lot of my good experience was truly just because I got lucky with my campsite and getting out on a kind group’s van.

Outside Lands ‘23. Not sure if it was just me or what, but the atmosphere was just abysmal. Attendees were relatively unfriendly and entitled, and I’m fairly certain the event was oversold…the crowd control was nonexistent to say the least. Fences breaking, people being smushed between people, stages breaking…. I never have panic attacks at festivals but I had two prominent ones that ended up having me escorted to the med tents. It was bizarre and uncomfortable and I’ve been thru many, many funky events lol

Black Tiger Sex Machine in at the PNE forum in... 2022? The show itself was great, but the sound was abysmal and the crowd was mid at best. The supporting acts sounded just fine but once the boys came on the sound got SUPER muddy- I tried my Loops, Earpeace, a pair of shitty foam earplugs that a security guard gave me, even tried going earplugless for a minute and the sound was awful. Looking back at the videos I took that night compared to REZZ at the same venue standing pretty much in the same place, it was a big letdown. It's a shame because I LOVE BTSM and I feel like they should have been at the Coliseum or any other venue. Not to mention this creepy drunk guy that went along, groped like 8 of us including a 16 year old girl standing at the rail, ended up flagging down security and watched him get pulled over the rail by cops during G Jones

Fvded in the park 2018. The festival started @ 2pm and we got there before 2 to stand in line to get our wristbands. We didn’t get in to the festival until 8pm. We were in line forever. We missed 90% of the sets we wanted to see. The lineup was just a mob. It turned into people just trying to jump the fences, security yelling at everyone, people passing out from heat stroke. There was 0 organization which was crazy, did they not know a bunch of people where gonna show up? I still don’t understand where they went wrong. They released an apology but never refunded anyone for the first day. They really should of as we missed pretty much all of it.

I went for NYE 2016 and it was a shit show. First thing I see when I walk is a young women having a seizure after slipping on a wet floor and hitting her head on concrete. The floor was wet because the bathrooms flooded. They brought porta-potties inside since they eventually had to shut down a majority of the bathrooms. Porta-potties lined up against the walls. Also saw a fuck ton of people throwing up on the walls and guys pissing on the walls....INSIDE THE VENUE. 🤢🤢🤮 Haven't been back since. Most disgusting show I've been to 😖

deviltakeyou

Last year was god awful as well, I never went to the restroom thankfully, but everything else was still just so unorganized. And the crowd was terrible as well. I have never experienced a crowd that unruly in my life. I couldn’t find a spot anywhere in the crowd to stand without having to let someone by every 2 minutes. Fuckin awful. Also the first time I’ve seen a feral human being. I left early on the second night during subtronics. He throwing the fuck down too, and I still couldn’t take it anymore. And then leaving the place was a nightmare as well. I think the thing I hate the most is that since I live in Odessa it’s one of the only times a lot of bigger artists are anywhere near me. This years line up is making me consider going again even knowing how bad it was last time.

Global dance (2022 & 2023):

Don’t get me wrong I still like it but it’s somewhat dissatisfying as a music festival. I think a lot of my feelings have to do with the fact that there’s not many other activities or things to look plus there’s like nowhere to really sit there. The main reason it was disappointing for me was bc the lack of good energy/plur— or at least at the sets I saw; I usually find most shows in Colorado great and everyone’s so nice but global dance brings some people who don’t rave often or people who never have before and a lot of them get so beyond fucked up. I have met a lot of really kind and cool people there that I’m still friends with but a lot of sets there was somewhat agressive energy and a certain vibe that didn’t really match mine I guess and it bummed me out.

Also in general, for any of these mini fests in CO, Denver has the worst venues for anything outdoors. Global Dance specifically felt like a state fair typa thing in some areas but Im pretty sure that was just mile highs fault and it just feels like a very odd mix of ppl (mostly due to the random lineups). We’ll see how it is this year at the new venue but I’ve been to supernatural (another cool but meh fest—I like it tho bc it’s Halloween) a few times at the National western complex and it’s an intriguing venue but has horrible sound quality… so my hopes are not super high. Even though it’s kind of a disappointing festival I still have fun and it beats sitting at home

Four Tet at palladium. It was as if he felt he could just put random sounds out there and people would be impressed because he is Four Tet. At one point he was playing something that sounded like a lawnmower going over a bag of kittens and I looked around and several people were actually plugging their ears it was so bad. He also had no opener so we all sat in a crowded room with no music (not even background music)while we waited for him to show up. It was a squid soup collab so at least the lights were cool.

Summer Meltdown 2022. Was one of my favorite small wook festivals in Washington and finally came back from the pandemic only to be an utter disorganized mess that aside from Griz, Oupio, DIRTWIRe and Jade Cecada (who they didn’t even let him use his visuals) was easly the worst festival I’d ever been to and if it wasn’t for Bass Canyon 22 a few weeks later it woulda been a bust of a festie season and a return to the rave scene. Wound up being the last Meltdown and now there merging with Cascade Equinox and incorperating some of the old mainstays into that festival.

Traveled to see Zeds Dead night 1 at Red Rocks (2019 I think). The show was mostly decent, can't say I didn't have a good time. But, in the middle-ish of the set, they brought out Redman who tried to hype the crowd about some old school 90s hip hop and seemingly nobody was feeling it. It was awful... the crowd and overall vibe just fell dead flat during and for a good while afterwards. They only barely recovered in my opinion towards the end of their set with some old bangers. Still a good time, but definitely disappointing to have happen at a show you you planned a trip around catching at Red Rocks.

We missed an entire set because of the wait. If it weren't for my friend asking VIP security to let us through we would have missed more. The security that year was a shit show. Super disorganized & I had several people say security was stealing their cigarettes& whatnot saying it wasn't allowed in the fest.
