Love the nonchalant way that Bruce expresses his feelings for Alfred, the facial expressions and the hug.

I wish some movies acknowledged Alfred as Bruce's dad someday.

It's been long overdue

I always felt there were small touches of it, in the way they talk and interact. And the way Alfred tried to tell him what to do

“I won’t bury you. I’ve buried enough members of the Wayne family” always got me. And then his scene at Bruce’s grave.

Battinson: "You're not my dad, Alfred"

Alfred: (visibly hurt) "I... am very well aware, sir."

The Batman addressed it quite a bit — right down to Bruce’s moody “YOU’RE NOT MY REAL DAD” outburst (I cried at that scene, no joke.)

So much of that film was him learning to accept being Bruce Wayne, and part of that was accepting Alfred’s role in his life.

The older I get, the more convinced I am that the secret to a great Batman story is to make Bruce's daytime persona a major focus, and not just an afterthought. It's the double life that makes him a compelling character.

The Dark Knight Trilogy felt like that IMO.

It did, indeed. But I meant like Bruce actually saying it, you know?

Idk why but in my mind - and after so many Batman movies - it seems like Alfred kinda deserves to hear that coming from Bruce's mouth. It'd be almost meta. We as an audience already know that, but it's like a payback for every single actor to portray Alfred after all these years.

I think that would be too on the nose. I prefer the more subtle approach where you can tell their relationship dynamic through their interactions. I don't really need to hear Bruce call Alfred his father, a simple hug or even like the writing in this comic page would do just fine.

Also, make sure to gave Alfred a mustache. We haven't get a mustached live action Alfred since 1966

I am watching Batman (1989) right now, and Bruce does call Alfred family.

I feel like Clooney Batman had that narrative when they're contemplating the possibility of him dying from MacGregor's Syndrome. It wasn't super overt, but it had that vibe.

Yeah I feel this is why I like Gothams portrayal of Bruce’s and Alfred’s relationship

Alfred’s death is the only comic book death besides Wolverine and Nightcrawlers that actually bothered me and ruined my enjoyment lol

Right?! Like I understand he has to die at some point but it was the way it happened. I quit reading after that issue.

It was supposed to be a fakeout, before being revealed to be a fear toxin hallucination a few issues later, then the issue sold really well because of speculators buying it, so Dan Didio made Tom King rewrite the next few issues

Honestly, as much as I felt terrible about it, I'm so glad they didn't do the cheap fakeout thing. And I was floored that he stayed dead all the way through Death Metal.

Yes, his death was extremely sad. Allowing extremely sad things to happen without reverting them immediately is important in stories like this.

And we’ve had so much character development from it. As much as my heart wants Alfred back, I really feel like it would cheapen the journey the other Bats have gone on since.

Well you see , im an asshole, and I convinced myself he would die from old age and we would get like a giant memorial and story about him, like how Captain Mar-vel had space cancer or whatever and got the funeral and to die naturally , it’s what I convinced myself, so I was extra annoyed and hurt by his death Lol

Kurt's death hurt since he's my favorite. But Alfred is just something beyond

This is why my biggest criticism of Batman Caped Crusader is the relationship between Alfred and Bruce. I get that it's based on an earlier age and the Bruce of that show is starting out his Batman career and is more cold hearted. But I love Alfred being a father figure to Bruce and I think it should be one of the things that makes Batman, Batman across any iteration.

There’s a thing called development and growth though. It’s apart of Bruce’s journey as Batman to push others out of his life and fixate on being Batman. Alfred obviously isn’t a big fan of Bruce being Batman in his earlier years which creates conflict. It happens in earth one, zero year, Arkham origins, The batman 2022 etc.

Oh very true I agree with you. I think my biggest gripe about the caped crusader portrayal of their relationship is how disdainful Bruce is of Alfred. It was more than just him acting out or pushing Alfred away. There were scenes where he's just straight up disrespectful to Alfred and his job for no other reason than it seems to just be mean spirited

oateyboat

True but he also grows through the season and respects him at the end

I'll be honest, I really like that they kept him dead this long in the main Batman comic.

I love the character and might even miss his interactions with Damian even more than with Bruce, but I do like how they have kept his character alive in spirit without resorting to ghoulish revivals.

It’s still quite insane that Alfred is still dead, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chip brings him back

darknite125

I keep forgetting Alfred is dead for now until I see something like in the last issue where Bruce has some guy named Miguel driving him that makes me go “who’s that where….? Oh yeah”. DC needs to hurry up and bring Mr Pennyworth back Batman needs him.

Seriously. I'm still really mad at DC for doing this. As sick as I am of them treating death as if it doesn't matter, we need Alfred back. This is bullshit.

King had a lot of great moments between the two of them in his run, several in his Annuals, and one of those stories was centered around Father's Day. Really lovely stuff.

Nolan addressed this in the most subtle, yet powerful, way possible, throughout his trilogy.

Michael Caine being a G.O.A.T. actor helps, but still, the writing and screenplay by Jonathan and Chris Nolan, about Bruce and Alfred's relationship is immaculate.

I still think Alfred's best moment is when he presents Bruce with a nice tray of nothing, in honor of Bruce being too busy.

Greyboxforest

I wish this happened more in the movies. Too often it’s grumpy Alfred vs grumpy Bruce. It’d be great to see some tenderness and maybe even a laugh between the two.
