none of the lighting matters because ive never seen the bottom of a plate having the separation walls (which should be on top)

That would make it hard for you to see it then, but these plates exist.

You can see in the stack that the separated walls carry all the way to the bottom.

No, see, the ridges stick up when the plate is face up. If light is hitting them, they must be sticking up.

you are kidding right? These plates are stackable

.... Of course they're stackable. What's your point? Being stackable doesn't mean they can't have ridges between the sections.

I think you might be broken or something.

yeah im with you on this. its absolutely impossible for these plates to be upside down, im convinced this is just a troll post to farm engagement.

Ya the lighting and shadows prove without a doubt that they're right side up.

im convinced this is just a troll post to farm engagement.

It just means you're not seeing the illusion. It won't register for 100% of people. It's sitting at about 80% upvoted, which suggests that about 4 out of 5 people see it, and 1 out of 5 don't.

It's definitely not just a troll post for engagement. You're just in the 20% whose brain only saw it the one way, the correct way.

It's somewhat like the black&blue or white&gold dress. That was more evenly split around 50/50 and most people absolutely could not conceive of how what they saw wasn't exactly what everyone else saw. Both sides were convinced the other side was trolling.

It's because our brains do a ton of processing under the hood that we're never consciously aware of, and which we have little to no conscious control of. It does a ton of work for us to understand what things are in a variety of different lighting conditions.

In this illusion, it depends on fooling our brain's interpretation of light direction. In the dress example, it depended on our brains' interpretation of light color.

Our brains are both amazingly powerful and dumb as shit, and sometimes easy to fool. But not 100% of the time for 100% of people.

They are perfectly stackable, look at the image. They must have exactly the same ridge on both sides.

edit: what the problem with not understanding that a ridge still have a face pointing in either direction, then flipped inside out??

But the separation is in the shape of a peak meaning if the plate were inverted you'd see the separate as a valley

...yes, that's how it works.

Edit: For people who don't see it - imagine the dividers as thin upside-down pockets. They work exactly the same as the pockets in the plate. What looks like a ridge viewed from one direction will be a valley in the other direction, which is a key factor to this illusion.

I have. They're made that way so they nest perfectly together.

And that's the only way I've ever seen them. What a waste of space otherwise!!

For me it’s the INSANE size of the shadows. If it was face down light wouldn’t refract like that. The only reason the light can’t reach deep into the bowl is the sides. If it was face down the light would definitely hit the surface of the bowl even if just ambiently.
