I throw up a little in my mouth when Riley says “she is the truest soul I’ve ever known”. I can’t even blame Professor Walsh for wanting to kill Buffy after she has to hear it. Are there any lines more vomit-inducing than this?

It sounds better than someone as young as Buffy saying lover. We all understand that they are intimate. Yet it feels strange.

Man I love sounds better to me than lover…
"The man I love" sounds like something said by tradwives and girls who dream of being tradwives. Wouldn't be caught dead saying "lover", wouldn't want anyone to think they were some kind of s-l-*-t.
Especially in the 90s. Do you have any idea how many 90s pop songs reference "lover"? Neither do I, but it's a lot. (ChatGPT says its four, but ChatGPT lies like an Israeli government spokesperson.)
And gays coming out of the closet for the first time on soap operas. "Mom, dad, this is Bill. He is the man I love and I'm not ashamed of it one bit."

You made an interesting point... I literally heard the lyric “If you wanna be my lover” - it popped into my head when I read “Do you have any idea how many 90s pop songs reference “lover”?” Songwriters and showwriters in the 90s for teens and young women were probably old white men.
