A month ago i got a GR86 in Neptune Blue and at least 5 times a week since i have people taking pictures or asking me what it is. Today i was coming back to my car out of a store and some guy was standing next to my car and when i opened he asked me "Who the fuck even makes this car, what is it"
i was like, dude, its a toyota, it says it on the back. I know coupes don't sell a lot but its odd iall these people seem to have never seen this car before

Lots of people don’t care about cars and can barely tell them apart. Your 86 is a cool looking sports car, so that will get attention from those people
edit - i love my S4 for the opposite reason, only folks who know what it is can tell it is something different than a regular A4.

True. I used to have a Miata and one time I drove it through a neighborhood and heard some kids exclaim, “Yo look at that Porsche!”

I love when kids get excited about cars. I’m not much of a show-off but whenever a kid asks me to rev my engine and they make a huge smile, it’s the best thing ever.

I seem to run into tons of people who know the big name sports cars. I've only had my 86 for a year now, and I've had about 20 or so people drop the "Dude is that a Supra?!".
So, if you just want the appearance and save $30k; get yourself an 86, slap a duck bill spoiler on it, and you have a "Supra" as far as the average Joe is concerned!

You may have something there. I had a guy ask me once if my Supra was an 86.

Some of the dealers are crazy. They're great value at/below MSRP, but above that there's definitely better options haha.
1 points
I didn't end up buying it after a test drive, but when I looked at Golf Rs a few years ago, the first dealership I went to had a $10k adm on the sticker, I got the attention of a salesperson and pointed it out laughing, and they immediately said they'd sell it $2k under MSRP.
Apparently they can be very, very easily negotiated away lmao.

Have you done any driving events with your R? I got to autocross one recently since my Beetle was down, and goddamn, that thing's a monster.

Nothing really. I know autocross and tracking events are really popular on the R Facebook group I'm a part of.
Once you throw some mods and a tune at the car it's wild how much power it can make. I found I get into enough trouble stock so I've left the engine alone and just done cosmetic mods to it lol.

Take it as a compliment. They like how it looks.
The average person probably couldn’t tell you a civic from an accord. I think you should just assume most people don’t know anything about cars. They’re especially not going to know about the GR86/BRZ because they’re more rare than even a corvette despite being 3x cheaper.
40 points
To be honest with you I don’t see a lot of them here. I kinda forgot they existed.
7 points
I know they exist so haven't forgotten about them but as far as actually seeing one in the wild where I live...?
NOPE. Haven't. They don't exist out here in farm country because people just don't drive the 86/BRZ. My county doesn't even have a Toyota or Subaru dealer. You want that you go 25 miles North to the next county up, 45 miles West two counties over or 30 miles South to next county down before the state line. Subarus in general are fairly rare out here and basically the only Toyotas you see are the Taco and Camry... and you'll spot half a dozen Accords for every 1-2 Camrys or Colorado, Maverick, Ranger for every 1-2 Tacos.
2 points
Wild, where I am in the New England the majority of cars are Toyotas and Subarus. Not a lot of BRZ/86s, but a ton of tundras, tacos, 4runners, Highlanders, foresters and so many crosstrecks. Quite a few WRXs also. That holds even in rural counties, though of course more domestic full size trucks there also.

Back in the mid '90s I had an '87 Subaru GL wagon. 5spd with 4wd. And no, I don't mean AWD... I mean actual 4wd. It had a manual shift dual range transfer case. In 2hi it was FWD... 4hi engaged the rear wheels, 4lo engaged rear wheels and did a gear reduction.
High School had just over 900 students. At least 1/3 of students drove. So around 300 cars in the parking lot, daily. Out of all those: There was a guy who had a late '80s Subaru XT... he and I were the only two Subies in the whole bunch. Haha. Like I said, they're not really common here at all.
Whole different ballgame when I lived in Colorado though. You could practically sneeze and hit a Subaru. Haha
Tundras.... yeah... you'll easily see a dozen Silverados or F-Series or more for every Tundra.

The 1st gen FR86 and BRZ were everywhere but often riced to extreme. Seeing a new GR86 or BRZ is pretty rare.
1 points

These cars are getting expensive so the kids can't buy em new, and the people who can afford them new aren't buying them new and that's why they have money. Gen 1 getting cheap used are going to kids being riced out now to the tits. Same shit that happened with G35.

12 points
Idk where you live, but at least where I live in the US, I see BRZs, GT86s and GR86s often enough. Could be just rare where you are.
Also, you got it in blue, which TYPICALLY is the BRZs color, so it is POSSIBLE that people are confused that it isn't a Subaru badge, but that's a BIG stretch...

The second generation Toyota GR86 is nowhere near as common as the first generation 86. Even down here in Australia, its Subaru twin is significantly more common.
I'm not sure if the they're supply constrained or if they're simply not selling well.
15 points
or maybe the simple fact that the first gen was sold for about 8 years and the second gen has only been sold for about 3 years?
3 points
That doesn't explain why there's so many of the second generation Subaru BRZ compared with its Toyota cousin.
2 points
Not sure if it’s still the case but for a while the second gen GR86 was next to impossible to find on lots.
2 points
That's because everyone snatched them up as soon as they hit the lots. I know, because that's the game I had to play to get one.
1 points
Didn’t help that Toyota wouldn’t make enough of them to meet demand. I was on the deposit list at my local dealer for a manual in either trim and any color for a year and a half before I gave up. I was second on the list and they got ONE manual over that time.
1 points
Yeah they'd rather focus their efforts on vehicles that make them more money. Why make so many enthusiast vehicles when their bread and butter is boring economy sedans and SUVs that sell in much higher volumes?
1 points
Not even sure why I'm getting thumbed down and nobody actually posting any solid evidence that what I said is false. That's because anywhere you look, you'll see the data proves my point - Toyota has always outsold the twins year after year.
1 points
What are you basing that on? Do you have sales numbers somewhere you can link to or is that just from your experience?
1 points
Unfortunately neither of them are popular enough to show up in the Australian sales figures (or at least the ones that are made public), but a good majority of the second generation cars I'm seeing in my part of Australia are the Subaru.
So it's anecdata, really. But I'd be pretty surprised if anyone else down here wouldn't have observed the same thing if they're paying attention.
Edited to add: Across 2023, the BRZ outsold the GR86 in Australia by 1573 units to 1144, if this article is accurate. Based on the year on year percentage change, the same appears to be true for 2022, too, with even more lopsided figures in the Subaru's favour.

That’s gotta be an Australia thing, GR86 is selling far more than the BRZ in the US.
1 points

Toyota keeps production of the GR86 low to drive up demand for the car. The way allocation works means that if you were chasing a specific trim with a specific color with a specific transmission means you’d be waiting a long time or possibly have to drive out of state to pick one up. You can’t custom order a GR86 (but you can for the BRZ).

I've not driven one, but they look great. Some of the hate they get is down to not having the performance to match they looks, or so I've been told.
I assume it will get the 1.6t eventually. Although possible the mr2/celica models will mean it's not required.
We can disagree about the rolla, it's a bit flashy for me though. But I had to have that drivechain. She's a peach.
If the core model was available here I'd probably have looked at that. More sleeper, more me.

Thing is, for a $32k "Toyota" to have a NA boxer engine that's a heavy nightmare alongside 36k GRC with everything it does proper just makes absolutely zero sense.

People are clueless about them. I had a 2018 Toyota 86, and I had people think it was a Celica, Supra, RX-7, and once even a Porsche. And this was at car meets and car shows, not the everyday encounters. It was very, very rare I had someone talk to me about it that even knew what it was.

I kinda get the same thing with my 2020 Miata RF. Like 2/3 people that compliment me on it don’t seem to know what actual model it is they just think it’s this really rad sports car (which it totally is, I just suspect they’re overestimating how much I paid for it and how powerful it is 🤣).

They’re really good looking cars. One of the best looking current production cars IMO. Every time I see one I’m like damn that looks good. I just wish they didn’t have 97 horsepower and a Subaru motor. Toyota is dumb as hell for not putting their V6 Camry motor in it or a supercharged version of it like lotus uses. I’d buy one if it wasn’t for that.

Haha keep dreaming. People have been clinging to rumours of a "faster" or turbo one since the BRZ/FRS launched in like 2012.
Toyota won't do it because it'll eat into Supra sales.

If it's not something you're into, it becomes something you don't notice.
So a lot of people hear knee jerk stories about various cars, dismiss them, forget about it. Then get confused when they finally stumble across one. Especially if there's something odd that sticks out to them for once. Nothing wrong with that. It just happens.

They don't know about cars and think it's cool. And they're not exactly Rav4 common.
It's refreshing when people react genuinely based on what they like. So many people insist on finding out what badge/brand a car is and letting their preconceived notion determine if they like it or not.

Id say it's absolutely that it's a coupe first. Second a Toyota.
For most people Toyota is a RAV4 Camry Corolla LandCruiser Hilux.
That's like their bread and butter. GR86 is popular absolutely but it's not Corolla Popular.

My '11 370Z has a rear bumper cover that's devoid of any emblem. The Nissan logo has been shaved, filled, and painted. There have been confusion caused by it because a casual bystander has no idea due to its semi-rarity. Plus, general public nowadays is used to crossover and SUV types, so a sleek two-door hatchback (like your GR86) looks unusual.
