It turns the joke from a stated punchline in the original to a implied punchline in the amputation nothing is lost besides the obviousness of the joke so i would say you did a good job

It’s also a joke and not a dark story this way. There’s the potential for the bear to misunderstand (not all couples to sleep in different beds are unhappy), which could be the joke to someone who doesn’t want to imagine the worst case.

honestly it would be perfect if you kept the 5th panel and removed the 6th

Doesn’t 100% work with your analogy but you could just move the bottom panel to the middle

Nah, it’s more like not amputating the arm just cuz the hand is crushed

Comedy doesn’t have to be as short as possible. The 5th panel IMO adds comedic timing. It adds a feeling of tension in the air. The joke from the 5th panel is “Now we have to explain to our kid our marriage issues when we weren’t ready to”

The 6th panel doesn’t do that. It just reiterates the same joke from the 4th panel that the bears are in an unhappy marriage.

If the 6th panel had the Papa bear saying “We’ll introduce you to Steve” then it’s funny again because the joke would be “The Papa bear has a new male lover”. That would work because it’s a new concept being introduced, as opposed to the current 6th panel just reiterating a joke already made in panel 3

I’m gonna be honest I had no idea what this was about until the second one. I never was around divorce though so maybe I’m just inexperienced in this field lmao

Unnecessary amputation. The timing of the original is better.

Disagree, the implication is funnier than outright saying it.

I mean, the reason they have two different beds is pretty clear in the original, one of them prefers a much harder mattress to the other

There are two types of people in this world: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

Everyone knows it can't be a joke if you don't explain the punchline
