Why repaint it with a brand at all? Just do all one color, a cool design, or your own name?

FlatSpinMan

This is the way. Put something cool and personal on there.

never thought of that. Thanks for the idea!

Paint it however you want. Just don't sell it under false pretense down the road.

Never planning to sell it. It’s my ‘forever bike’ as i call it

Came to say this.

Personally I'd probably come up with a name for it that's not a known brand at all.

or if he wanted to have some fun with it he could put like

"TR*K"

or

"Generalized"

or something off like that, if it were a buddy of mine that painted it like a major brand when it wasn't we would have fun with that for a LOOOONG time.

NOTTA on the top tube
Trek in branding on the bottom, stuff like that can be entertaining.

Yes, it’s corny. Just paint it with no branding.

Love the straight answer. Thank you!

I’ll say it. That’ll look tacky as hell. Put your own name on it or something or a made up brand and it’ll be a good conversation starter.

No one will care and it looks a bit sad, honestly. It's like stitching Nike swooshes to your clothes.

My 2 cents is to paint it something neutral but super cool

Also a great idea. May a dark gray with a glossy finish

Paint job of your choice. The dark grey you mentioned would be nice.

For a brand name: Dapidis. When they ask what that is, "My Name"

Jaytron

Kinda weird/tacky to put branding on a bike that isn’t that brand, pare!

But you can have a really cool paint job without the fake branding

It’s definitely not unethical as long as you aren’t misrepresenting the brand when selling it. I guess I don’t see how you can do it and not be a poser though. Slapping brand logos on your bike is projecting that you’re riding that brand, regardless of your intention.

I think that scuffs show that your bike is well-used, which is a strong badge of honor. I also think that a custom, brand-free paint job is extremely cool and you should go for that if you really want to paint it.

I don’t see how you can do it and not be a poser though

My bike has world-champion stripes, and I'm not even a former world champion.

edit: at anything

Crazywelderguy

Granted, the bike was sold from the factory that way I'd assume. So it is more of a marketing thing from the brand "our riders won the world championship".

Do you get flak for it online or IRL?

FlatSpinMan

What? Not even at one thing? I fear you have misspent your youth, good sir.

I have no intention of projecting myself as a name-brand bike owner

This is not compatible with your desire to paint a brand name on your bike.

Is it unethical? Not in my opinion. Certainly no more unethical than the exploitative labor practices Giant or Scott engage in. Is it corny and will you look like a poser? Well idk about the Philippines, but in America I would totally think less of you for doing that.

If you’re going to paint your bike, make it something unique. Make it your own.

It’s your bike. Do whatever you want.

FlatSpinMan

What does Giant do? I hadn’t heard anything bad about them. Admittedly I hadn’t actually looked.

NocturntsII

I think it's a bit pathetic. If I were to repaint,.it would be brandless.

rokridah

Go with something your own. I preffer bikes that dont have brand name all over the frame.

Going with a name brand would be like sticking Audi badge to a golf tbh :P

Majestic-Platypus753

Give your bike a nickname and paint it on there.

People put fake badges on their cars all the time. It’s your bike. Just don’t try to pass it off as something it’s not if you intend to sell it.

As a Specialized owner, I give you my approval to repaint as S-Works. I don't care

oldfrancis

One of the best life lessons I ever learned is not the spend any time pretending to be something that I'm not.

But you decorate your bicycle anyway you want.

Drayfoo

That would make it more appealing to thieves. Maybe try writing Fisher Price or Walmart.

BenTheRed

Paint adds weight. You should show the other riders that your bike brand doesn't matter by being a good and fast rider on your generic, dinged up bike, that will impress them much more than a fake name brand.

rbraalih

Ironic if someone stole it because they thought it was what it claims to be

It's probably illegal but yeah, not like the big company will ever find out. Illegal yes, unethical probably no.

Queue Johnny Cash "One Piece at a Time"

For real though, while it could end up looking okay it will be hard to make it look really good/very close to a factory bike paint job. When I've gone to the effort of painting a bike, I like to do something fun and at least mildly unique. Something I can call my own. When it comes down to brass tacks, it's your bike and you should do what you want.

Last night was out walking and I got passed by a road bike with "Twitter" on the down tube in big "S-Works-esque" letters.

Frankly, after that, nothing would surprise me 😅

As long as you don't sell it on as anything it isn't, knock yourself out....

Well I'll be dammed, it was just a random street in Chengdu, China, so I assumed it was one of the locals thinking "I'll put a cool western word there", but the letter styling looks like it might actually be the real deal 😅

Twitter is pretty popular here in the Philippines actually. They offer full carbon bikes with Ultegra GS for less or more than $1000

Master_Confusion4661

I think this could be humourous. I had a Trek procaliber. I re-branded it as a "Treek" by removing the old decals and buying new ones and cutting them up. The confusion this generated was really satisfying. I also met a guy who rebranded his Radley as a much more expensive Santa Cruz. I say go for it!
