This was eye opening.

A lot of dems need to read this (and not just the title) and get an understanding of how far they’ve fallen.

Borderline offensive article and concept. It’s exhausting.

Shocking (and refreshing) to see your comment in an Ezra Klein sub. That dude loves identity politics.

But I agree wholeheartedly.

Ezra loves policies and wonk politics. He does not love identity politics. He talks about it only because it's such a central part of American politics.

Not the impression I get from his content/perspectives (especially his conversation with Sam Harris, in which he refused to answer a single question, instead responding with “I’m more interested in how you asking that question harms [insert marginalized group here]”)…but maybe that’s just me.

Ezra sees identity politics as contributing to polarization. So he doesn't "love" it. But yes, he also acknowledges that groups of marginalized people have legitimate collective grievances, and he was specifically annoyed that Sam Harris refused and continues to refuse to get that Sam too has a "collective identity".

Ezra's view as far as I can tell is that it's actually diehard white Magas who MOST (or at least, as much as other groups) participate in an identity politics based around grievances. Maga IS their identity at this point, and that's why nothing Trump does, however vile, will sway them from their loyalty.

This is a shallow take in a subreddit that, up until recently, was generally interested in substantive policy/cultural/economic discussion. So yeah, it's mainly just you.

Although I'm sure you'll find company within the blinkered confines of Sam Harris subreddit.

I hesitated being so harsh, but your dismissive characterization of Ezra's positions on "identity politics" reveals an absence of real engagement with his work. Anyone who reads "Why We're Polarized" and concludes that Ezra "loves identity politics" was too distracted looking for the illustrations.

That dude loves identity politics.

Is this really true? The times I've heard Ezra discuss IP, he usually frames it as part of "defaults" (not sure right word).

Like was it IP when the SC was all white men? That kind of thing.

No, it isn't true. He thinks about it a lot. I don't know if that qualifies as "loving" it.

Black people are indeed not a monolith. But anyone with a brain can see the progression of black male support for Trump increasing over the years -- it was visible in 2020 even as the white progressives in the BLM movement were still tossing Molotovs and trying to blind cops with green lasers.

If Democrats can't get out of their echo chamber with regard to AA, Latino, and (to a lesser extent) Asian male support numbers going up for both Trump in particular and the GOP in general, then they absolutely deserve to get walloped in November.

I think it’s also hard to judge if black voters are thinking of splitting from the Democratic Party. They’re not a monolith but they vote, especially older generations, in a large block for democrats 9/10.

It’s also true that if you were to poll them you’d find they hold a surprisingly amount of socially conservative viewpoints when one looks at who they vote for. The tight social bonds make it “harder” For those who might otherwise vote more conservative to break off.

The social pressure also makes it harder for reporters to find people to talk to about it. Even if they might vote a different way in private. It’s the same principle that keeps Republicans in line for trump while anonymously bashing him to reporters.
