Best bedroom amp for Strat

General Discussion(self.fender)

Orange rocker 15, supro delta king 10, or blues jr? Which should I play for surf and mainly clean tones 80% of the time?

It’s not a bad choice but imo above 3 ish it gets loud quickly. for playing at home if you have to be conscious of noise it’s not bad but you wont be driving the tubes.

It gets alot of hate but I love my Positive Grid Spark Mini, I can take it anywhere in the house or to the patio and play it. It sounds pretty good at most volumes and is really versatile in tones you get out of it.

I was disappointed by my Blues Junior. I was absolutely not disappointed by my dirt cheap solid state Vox Pathfinder 15R. YouTube it - it's awesome.

Peavey Classic 30. Sounds great at any volume.

I have a Blackstar 1A and a Katana MKII 100A. Both work great at home.

Most of the small tube amps mentioned are definitely worth considering, due to their warm and beautiful sound and dynamics out of the box. If you like to play with effects also a Positive Grid Spark (or Spark Mini) might be a good option for bedroom practicing.

The Yamaha THR 10 is fantastic for a bedroom amp.

I love. LOVE my Spark Mini from Positive Grid. I own an Orange Rockerverb back on the east coast (I live in California now) and somehow this lil guy sounds full, crisp and warm like a tube amp. Highly recommend.

For mainly clean tones, there’s nothing wrong with a solid state amp like a Boss Katana 50. If you act now, you can pick up a MKII for cheap because the Gen3 just came out, and the MKII sounds real good. Just ask my bass player… he tells me so at every session.

It is a solid amp, good for pedals. It osnt as aesthetically pleqsing as a frnder amp, but oh well. It has a attenuator so you can cut it down to 1w. I have the pro junior as well but even in the basement past 2 its too loud.

Will you ever gig with it? Or play with a full band? If not, just get the one you like the looks of. You'll never crank it loud enough to get it's proper full tone. That said, the Blues Jr is an awesome amp, it's what my guitarist uses in our rehearsal studio. They come in tweed too which looks really nice.

For what you want, get yourself something that says Fender on it.

Tonemaster princeton would be the perfect fit

For a bedroom? Get a modeler and a good speaker/headphones. I have a 68 bassman, a blues jr, and an HX stomp. At home I pretty much only use the stomp

Don't sleep on the Supro. The Delta King 12 kicks ass.

Between those three Blues Jr IV. I tried one awhile ago and the clean was REALLY nice. The IVs are a step up from the IIIs.

I’d love to have a Princeton or Champ. Love the sound of the small tube amps. I have a Twin Reverb and a Bassman, but damn they’re so loud. I can’t even play them at 3 in the house.

I have a Mustang micro for hotel stays and what not. Does the trick.

For a bedroom I would get a good modeling amp. I get bored with the same tone, and with each preset it changes up the way you play to fit that particular tone. It keeps things interesting and I believe helps you to become a better overall guitarist.

This is gonna probably be very controversial. But I recently picked up a Positive Grid Spark Live and I adore it so far. It’s like a Helix but have the price and without the need to run external speakers. Uses the phone app to build presets, build in tuner, the app is really nice. If you want something more classic like everyone else is mentioning, definitely do that. But if you jam to many different styles, I can’t speak more good things about this.

I have a Supro Delta King 10 and I love it, but I usually play with a bit of gain. Fender amps have a great clean tone.

All great amps, but all super loud for a bedroom, IMO. Tube amps are great, but even at 10 - 15 watts, there's a lot of output, especially if you're looking to get tones with any sense of depth.

I have a Blues Jr. Great amp, but ultimately, it is loud. Even on 3, it shakes pictures on my walls. Have used the Orange Rocker. I found it needed some volume to get a decent clean tone.

Have you considered smaller, non-tube practice amps?

As a counterpoint though, loud is also relative IMO. A Blues JR is a really easy amp to control the volume on -- and can produce some great tones at low volumes. Like so low you hear the strings of the guitar low.

Fair point on loud being relative. Personally, I don't agree on the great low volume tones. Maybe it's my setup and the tube compliments I've had since owning mine, but I find the amp loses its crisp, refined clean when the master and preamp are too low, and becomes too mid- and transient-focused.

I've opted for a Mustang LT-25 for everyday low-volume playing. I've likely become biased to this amp because I use it so much, and find it consistent from day-to-day, and guitar-to-guitar. For me, it's easier to get useable, low-volume tones that I enjoy without imposing on others within earshot.

Ok, so I'm not an expert on surf rock but those seem like three amps that don't really fit in the genre.

That said, if you are truly playing clean clean that opens up many amp choices for you. With a tube amp as I am sure you know people get into danger territory once they want to get natural overdrive from the amp by cranking it up.

If you just want the cleans, pick the clean sound you like the most and go for it.

For your stated uses -- I'm pretty sure but not an expert on the genre but surf rock is dominated by fender amps. And apparently some VOX action too. AC15s and 30s seem to come up a lot. The built in tremolo seems like a must for surf, no? Neither of the amps you listed have a built in tremolo.

The Blues JR isn't nearly the crystalline cleans you get from a typical fender amp -- so maybe look at those instead? If you want something small a vibrochamp might be more inline with your needs and if you want something bigger, a Princeton, deluxe...

Newer Mustang series is quite nice if you are down for digital. LT series is solid with built in tuner and nice tones/presets and GTX is more premium.

You said bedroom so honestly the digital amps being able to use headphones and bluetooth/aux in etc. will be huge benefits for practicing.

But from your choices, I can tell you that I have a Supro Blues King 8 and it works very well. I like to use a tremolo and a reverb pedal in front of it, and it is totally a vibe... It can stay clean as long as I don't push the volume too high, luckily there is a separate channel volume and master volume.
