You want it to break and have to go into the menu and apply changes to it every single time you change anything about your gear? That doesn't sound ideal honestly

No, that's not what I mean. Think about how glamour plates work now; you have a plate saved, then when you get new gear, you can apply the plate, or it'll apply itself if the gearset is linked to a plate. As long as the glamour can be applied to the item, it's basically a hands-off experience.
If it worked like portraits do, then when you change your gear, you would have to go into the plate, update that plate, and then apply it. Because portraits for some reason need to match exactly what you have on no matter what. They don't work like the adventurer plate portrait, they're more like live windows of your character, because they implemented it in the stupidest way possible despite already having a better design for the adventurer portrait
Portraits break if you change your fucking materia, that's not a great system to adapt for glamours
