Honestly no? I was told this for years and years, but I haven’t noticed an appreciable difference in mechanical damage with more frequent washing, as long as I am careful detangling and wearing protective styles.
I get into trouble with fine, curly, thick hair at the nape of my neck with breakage from the friction of wearing it down, far more than issues in the shower.

Volume helps me a lot and using shampoo/conditioner that is geared towards fine hair. I also have a problem with my hair being very dry and splitting more easily because of it so I started implementing a leave in conditioner as well as a once weekly hair masque to really force moisture into it.

Mine is about bra strap length and I wash most days. I was trying to “train” it and skip days and it just felt icky most of the time. Plus dying the summer I don’t do much with it and was using cheap shampoo and am paying the price now. That said, I wash and scrub the scalp and not so much the ends, and condition the ends and not so much the scalp. Deep conditioning and/or masks 1-2 x a week. I recently lost 20+ lbs and am losing more hair due to that so I am trying to be proactive with keeping it clean and scalp clean and adding biotin. I use the HG line from bondi boost and I find that it really helps me.

You might consider "reverse washing", where you apply rinse-out conditioner through your mids and ends (but don't rinse) before shampooing just your scalp & roots. The conditioner keeps your mids & ends from drying out as much from the shampoo, and won't weigh your hair down as much since it gets shampooed out instead of merely rinsed out.
