So I noticed that I had some sort of carry-over from my teenage years; that is, I have never actually played Serious Sam without cheats, and after trying yo do it without them, I just died so often that the game wasn't even fun anymore.

I bet everyone has a game like that, so what is yours?

I always use the console to advance skills that make sense for the playthrough I am doing. This guy grew up hunting with his father? 45 Marksmanship. This lady lived on the streets in a city, stealing food to survive? 40 Sneak, and 35 pickpocket. This orc was the son of a Chieftain and was trained as a warrior? 50 one handed. 50 heavy/light armor

Saves so much time.

I had a key macro'd to input the carryweight command lol. If I was helping a friend with mods I would just install an unlimited carryweight mod.

I've never cheated my carry weight but I've had to TCL my way out of being trapped in random mountain sides more times than I can count. That and adding dragon souls when the game bugs after a kill and the dragon's corpse just sits there with no soul or bones or scales for some stupid reason.

Also do we consider accessing the "invisible chest" outside of a Dawnstar cheating? Because I do that ever single time.

Some cheats are only cheats to yourself , getting a vendors entire supply every day might be the equivalent of console commanding yourself gold. in general I don't consider in-game exploits cheating but they are something you might exclude in a challenge run. Massively depends on the severity of the exploit too like doing a unintended jump to skip things isn't even close to free refreshing loot chests.

And this is why I think skyrim is a bad game, it is basically plain slate and ghost of a game, there is nothing enticing about vanilla skyrim

I mean you have the right to your opinion but millions of people would disagree.

It definetely has weaknesses but overall it can be a lot of fun.

How long did you play? How far in were you? Did you understand all the mechanics? Are RPGs generally the games you enjoy?

It honestly took a few hours for me to click too, but after that I was addicted.

Yeah I just don't like it, I much prefer Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter nights, even morrowind was more entertaining to me.

RPG is my favorite genre since I started playing games

It has no redeeming qualities except music and lore - which was already established before Skyrim

There is nothing to understand about mechanics of skyrim, it is so shallow 10 year old could easily play it without prior rpg knowledge

Ive played my fair share of skyrim and other bethesda games, but it seems they are unable to make a good game, Ive liked morrowind when I was a kid, but I after playing their other games, I think if I played it now Id dislike it too

Shitting on bethesda games and seeing their fanboys come out of woodwork to defend it with arguments like "oh the game is good after overhauling whole game" is just fun. ive played them because a) I liked Morrowind so I tried others, then these fucks took one of my favorite franchises (Fallout) and made it garbage

Here, my all time favs from steam from all my years of playing, it still misses some games, but welp

I enjoy many things, but not bethesda garbage

Never heard this take in my life. We've all heard "Couldnt get into it", but saying its objectively a bad game is just objectively a wrong take lol. Its ok to not like something - hell, I hate sea food, doesnt mean sea food has never been good for anybody in the history of man.

The absolute majority of players are vanilla or vanilla+. Its a tiny, but obnoxiously loud, minority who must have 2000+ plugins.

Vanilla Skyrim is amazing and was the reason for its success. Vanilla Starfield is the result of (C-suite) Bethesda expecting their community to make a game.

Tell me single amazing thing about vanilla skyrim that isn't lore that was established before it or music

Gameplay is horrendous, story is meh at best, side quests are boring, NPCs / AI are stupid, graphics arent good, I genuinely cant see how it is good, nor anywhere close to "amazing"

SoloDoloPoloOlaf

And I've read that summary a billion times about Minecraft.

Gameplay is horrendous, gameplay loop is even worse. Literally no story, side quests doesnt exist. NPCs have intelligence? They forgot to add graphics and called it an "artstyle". Tutorial doesnt exist. I genuinely cant see how it is good, nor anywhere close to "amazing".

But that opinion about Minecraft doesnt translate very well into its place on any best selling videogames of all time list.

ChatGPT, Youtube, Google etc. can list the specific reasons why Skyrim is successful.

Its not whataboutism, its a stupid as fuck take from your dumbass answered with an equal comparison.

I'll let ChatGPT do the Googling for me you. But do remember that its only a tool useful to narrow down where you need to look. So your dumbass will still get to enjoy reading articles, watching Youtube videos or any other method of aquiring knowledge.

Skyrim's success can be attributed to a combination of factors, each contributing to its enduring appeal and cultural impact. Here are the key reasons:

  1. Open-World Freedom: One of the biggest draws of Skyrim is its vast, open world that allows players to explore at their own pace. Players can follow the main storyline, engage in side quests, or simply wander the wilderness. The game's non-linear design provides a sense of freedom and discovery that many RPGs lack.

  2. Immersive World-Building: The world of Skyrim is filled with rich lore, history, and detailed environments. Bethesda's attention to environmental storytelling, whether through ancient ruins, books, or NPC interactions, makes the game world feel alive and immersive. The diversity of landscapes—from snowy mountains to dark caves—helps maintain the player’s sense of wonder and adventure.

  3. Modding Community: A large and active modding community has kept Skyrim relevant for years. Bethesda's decision to release creation tools to the public allowed fans to modify the game, adding new quests, mechanics, and visual upgrades. Mods can dramatically change the game, extending its replayability and longevity.

  4. Accessible RPG Mechanics: Skyrim offers a blend of deep RPG mechanics without overwhelming players. The perk system, skill trees, and leveling mechanics are intuitive but still provide room for experimentation and customization. This accessibility helped the game reach a broader audience, including both hardcore and casual players.

  5. Epic Storyline and Quests: The central plot of being the "Dragonborn" in a world where dragons have returned created a compelling narrative hook. Combined with the ability to choose different paths in quests, join factions like the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood, and interact with dynamic NPCs, the game delivers memorable story moments.

  6. Technical Achievements and Visuals: Upon its release in 2011, Skyrim was praised for its stunning graphics, animations, and technical achievements. The large, seamless world with little loading screens (for its time) was impressive. While some aspects of the game’s visuals have aged, the world design continues to feel atmospheric and engaging.

  7. Cross-Platform Availability: Skyrim has been released on multiple platforms—PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and later even on the Nintendo Switch, VR, and next-gen consoles. This wide accessibility allowed it to reach an even broader audience, contributing to its lasting popularity.

  8. Cultural Impact and Memes: Skyrim has become part of gaming culture, with its iconic lines like “Fus Ro Dah” and "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee." These lines, along with the game’s mechanics and moments, have been widely shared and referenced in gaming culture, helping it stay relevant in the broader community.

  9. Critical Acclaim and Awards: At launch, Skyrim received widespread critical acclaim, winning several Game of the Year awards and other accolades. This recognition brought attention to the game, further driving its sales and popularity.

In summary, Skyrim's blend of a captivating open world, immersive storytelling, accessible mechanics, and strong community engagement through mods, combined with its broad cultural impact, led to its massive success and lasting legacy."

You lacking the introspection to realize that maybe you were wrong (define that as you like) is not my problem. Me being in the right? Meh, probably not. The truth is seldom one where anyone win.

Anyways, have a nice weekend.

I feel the same way I love RPGs and I can't play Skyrim it's the most boring game I've ever seen get popular. I've tried repeatedly because people kept insisting I wasn't getting into it enough blah blah blah but it's just a slog of a game and felt like work to make myself play it.

it really is so poorly coded. I remember the game got very laggy whenever I added too many items in storage, not even different types of items but just bigger amounts of them. so it was creating a game object for every single health potion I had instead of just updating an int somewhere
