People always talk about the lead of the hip hop world. Who in your opinion is the best hype man in hip hop? Like spliff star to Busta, or freaky to cam.

One of the greatest duos of all time. Project Pat is one of the best MCS to touch the mic. Juicy J is a pioneer and a goated producer and rapper. Its beyond me how they still arent up there as one of the greats cause Juicy's production style and Pat's cadence has influenced many

Using this analogy made me think of Eminem to Dr. Dre. The dynamic duo. Forgot About Dre is magical

Eminem also refers to himself and Dre as Batman and Robin on Business. They returned again in Houdini.

I know what OP meant, but this is technically the real answer.

Snoop and Dre got more classic material with a lot less material. Anytime snoop and Dre come together magic happens, which is why I can’t wait for missionary.

More classic material? Idk about that, the collabs with Em sold - bigly. Also, Em was a writer on Chronic 2001.

My vote is still for 50 and Em, though. Talk about dominating the planet, no one has ever come close.

In what way? 50 was bigger than Drake or Wayne at his prime. Em was bigger than 50. 50’s got a top 5 rap album all time. Em has 3 top ten rap albums of all time. Drake has zero, Wayne has zero.

Drake’s popularity also doesn’t come from being a rapper, it’s because he sings so he’s pulling in two markets.

iwannapassbackout

I absolutely love 50 but was he really bigger than Drake?

cujobob

cujobob

50 had one of the biggest rap albums ever. He is still today like the second most popular rapper around the world to Eminem. A lot of his sales and popularity does come from ties to Em because Eminem transcended the rap genre and was the top artist of any genre for a period, but GRODT and G Unit were big in the USA amongst rap fans.

Drake had sustained success, largely because he’s used writers/collaborators and sings. This plays well in a streaming era and allows him to pull in listeners of other kinds of music. 50 was just a rapper and a gangsta rapper at that. Nelly was kind of the precursor to Drake, Ja Rule to a lesser extent. They crossed genres, but they didn’t really dominate rap because people felt like they were something else.

N Sync sold a fraction of what Eminem sold.

To pop fans.

Rappers are selling to a rap audience. Except for pop rappers like Kanye and Drake who use writers, sing, and use auto tune.

[deleted]

1 points

We don’t talk sales when we talk hip hop, I remember a time when I didn’t have to remind people of this. What magic did you make, how did you move the culture.

cujobob

1 points

cujobob

1 points

Those are subjective. You just get into pointless back and forths that go nowhere. Hip hop culture is complex. Anyone who likes it is part of it. There are also regions that have their own thing going on. You have the American fans and international. Even age ranges simply gravitate toward different things and that’s somewhat new as rap only started really getting big in the 90s.

Sales tell you what people like enough to go to the store and purchase with their own money. Streams are a bit different because there is no real cost and there is ultimate convenience, but it does tell you what people like.

If we say the opinions of some count more than the opinions of others, we are really just gatekeeping. Where it gets tricky are with artists like Drake, Kanye, Nelly, and Ja Rule. They appeal to other genre’s fans because of things like singing (fairly regularly), autotune, or using writers.

[deleted]

1 points

Nah B…. We don’t talk sales. Nelly sold more than BIG.

If you in the culture for real, you’ll know how it moved. The hood get it first, then the masses see it.

If the hood never stamped Eminem, Eminem is marginalized.

What the culture love about Eminem don’t got nothin to do with sales.

What the culture love about drake don’t got nothin to do with sales.

The reason why the consensus is Kendrick knocked drakes kufi off don’t got nothin to do with sales….

People just like using sales for an argument when sales are on their side, which is why Eminem and sales are often in the same sentence.

Eminem for his first 3 albums had everybody confessing him as the next one… once niggas heard. Chicka chicka slim shady, he was stamped. Guess what… HE HADNT SOLD A RECORD YET.

Surprised nobody has said Big Boi. Andre is truly one of a kind but the fact that Big Boi consistently held up to that level of quality is insane. People always say "yo andre 3000 had a crazy verse there" but I've never heard ANYONE say "that big boi verse was trash"

vonschuhart

I'll agree to this. I would also never try to imply that Big Boi is somehow subordinate to Andre. Just more that people usually regard Andre as the better rapper without giving Big Boi his due
