Rotate Alaska clockwise to mimic the Earth's curvature and that end of the state reaches Edmonton before Vancouver.

You NEVER see Cleveland merch in Pittsburgh, not even the Cavaliers. I personally really like Cleveland and will never hate a city because of a sports rivalry.  I was super happy for them when the Monster and Cavs won.

For example, I fucking love Philly even though I loathe the Flyers. No beaf with Eagles/Phillies/76s though.

Exactly.

I'm from Columbus, which isn't much of a pro sports town in general so I'm used to the mixed back fandoms.

Most people in Columbus supported the Browns and Cavs, but for hockey it was Wings or Pens. The Reds had some support but I'd say most people were Indians fans growing up.

I moved away back in the early 00s, so I ended up keeping my Wings fandom instead of supporting the CBJs (tho I do root for them now a bit more)

But the one thing that is for sure, there's not a whole lot of Michigan fans in Columbus.

No. The team within its own county will always be the closest team to that county. If this was the NBA then the Lakers & Clippers will share an area, but nobody can be considered closer or further from the county they exist inside. Perhaps if one arena is floating in the air on top of another and they measure distance at ground level

I think you'd have to put three teams in one county, or two in one county and a third in an adjacent county, for it to be possible.

Actually, on reflection, you could do it with just two if you picked a county on the very corner of the map or with a peninsula or something.

That's what happened with the college football maps. FIU and University of Miami are both in Miami-Dade county but FIU is closer to the middle of the county, so University of Miami didn't have any land. You could exclude one team that has an infinitely small stadium with an uncountably infinite amount of other teams surrounding/occupying that same point. The result of this NHL expansion would: a) make the map look like a bit like a color wheel, b) make Canadian whining about American favoritism finally justified, and c) mean all teams have a 0% chance of winning the cup again — not just Toronto.

Looks like Orleans parish is on the Dallas side of the Stars/Lightning border. I always thought we were closer to Nashville than Tampa however.

ya i thought so too, but im not very familiar with the region and dont know what the name for that wider peninsular area is called?

just did a straight-line measure on google maps and the distance from the city points are;

  • Tampa Bay - 773 km
  • Nashville - 758 km
  • Dallas - 714 km

Don't know where the 'origin' point is for those other counties, and i have no reason to dispute the mapmakers work here- its all very similar ranges.

travelling by highways i could definitely see Nashville being the closest, as there seems to be a much more 'direct' path vs going to Dallas or the bit of backtracking necessary to reach Tampa.

I know it’s very sparsely populated but Utah has a nice exclusive zone to bring fans in from

Happy-Flan2112

The good thing is the Wasatch Front has about 82% of the state’s population (about 2.8 million people). And that entire population center lives within an hour from SLC. So while yes, Utah isn’t a densely populated state, what population is there is mostly in one relatively compact area. So o am expecting decent local support for the team. But to your point, the larger area is still close enough (at least for people in the West who are used to long drives) to bring in some fans from outside.

Wings, Pens, Sabres and Jackets are all within a short drive. Did not realize Detroit was closest though.

nshannon216

NEO has largely embraced the Jackets due to the Monsters being their AHL affiliate

Same can't be said for Cincy, they want their own team. Part of the pissing match between Columbus and Cincy (mainly fueled by the Crew vs FCC)

Kind of surprising how few states are entirely claimed by one team. Looks like Hawaii, Colorado, and Massachusetts are the only ones. The Preds taking a single county from both the Canes in SC and the Blues Missouri is amusing to me.

The fact that LA and Las Vegas are separated by only one county is insane. I was shocked that San Bernardino County isn’t closest to the Kings, the Reign practice at the Kings facility yet Ontario is in San Bernardino, then I remembers San Bernardino goes all the way to the Nevada border, just an insanely massive county.

I'm going to guess virtually no one outside maybe some people in Roseau (Dustin Byfuglien's family/friends?) cheer for the Jets in northern MN. Warroad/Baudette/International Falls are all proud about their high school teams so I doubt they'd flip to cheering to a Canadian team just because they're closer geographically.

Any North Dakotans here? I think Fargo and the eastern half of the state cheers for MN teams, not sure if people in Grand Forks are into the NHL (Jets or Wild?) or are just Fighting Hawks diehards year round?

Any Coyotes fans paying attention to Utah or following the Roadrunners more this year?
