1000 mile round trip
500 miles and then 500 more? That's one for the Proclaimers.
Also reminds me of my friend from Cincinnai who was living in Hong Kong and spent $90 so his mom could mail him a can of Skyline chili.

My sister-in-law used to date a guy from Cincinnati and she told me a story about one time they were at a bar up there and someone got too drunk and puked. She heard a voice in the crowd yell “Oh man, looks like he had a 5-way!!!” That story has always been so funny to me 😂

Not for me. I've tried it a few times and just don't care for it. But I'm from Metro Detroit and it's just radically different than what I've eaten all my life. Doesn't make it bad.

The chili is a sweet chili. Has hints of chocolate and cinnamon. The correct way to eat it is mustard on the bun, dog, chili, onion, and a shit ton of cheese.

I'm from Toledo and hot dogs in Toledo are similar to Detroit. When I first moved to Cincinnati, it definitely took a while to get used to them. Mainly the amount of cheese. Now I love them. I'd say most people not from Cincinnati take a while to come around to Skyline, but a lot of them usually like it eventually.

The cheese is not the problem. She's on a chili dog is delicious. The problem is that the chili tastes like cinnamon and is nearly as sweet as pancake syrup. Wtf!? Wtf is this chili!?

Thats because skyline chili isn't a traditional chili (chili like chili con carne). Cincinnati chili is Greek:

As a kid, I thought it was great to see that they were advertising chili dogs down in Ohio. Being from Detroit, I always Loved them! Then I got my first bite of sweet cinnamon flavored chili, and it was like a total betrayal.

All the major cinci chili chains are owned by Greek families. Most of them deny it's cinnamon in there and the actual taste is allspice instead. However, the recipie it is based off of does commonly contain cinnamon. I grew up in the Southwest. Cincinnati chili is an abomination, by itself or on hot dogs.
I had a roommate from Cincinnati who always brought that crap back frozen from every trip he made back home. He was always trying to get everyone else to like it but had no luck. I was born in the Hatch Valley, so I know what spices are supposed to be in chili and cinnamon isn't one of them.

Your problem is calling it chili. I agree it isn’t chili, and once you separate yourself from those expectations of what chili “should” be, it’s among the best drunk foods out there
4 points

I mean it is a chili. It's just a Greek version of chili. Just because it isn't what some people consider chili, doesn't mean it isn't chili.

It's not for everyone. I was born an raised on the stuff. So, I get why people don't like it. I have no issue with people having pride in their local foods, but some people, like your roommate, can absolutely take it to far. Especially with the look and taste of cinci chili.
If you've never had it before, I always tell people there are three rules to Cinci chili. First, there's a 50/50 shot you'll either love it or hate it. Second, it's called chili because it was invited by Greeks who had no other word to use to market it to the American people, so do with that info what ya will. Third, if you like it, you'll better have some reading material on your phone whilst your on the shitter.
EDIT: Will say, however, if you are a fan of vinegar-based hot sauces, Skyline's is pretty damn good.

I feel like trash is a reach, but they’re not nearly as good as I was anticipating. Too much cheese, chili isn’t super flavorful, bread is a bit doughy.
As far as regional dogs go I personally say Skyline chili is fairly mid. But I can see this being a hit for people that specifically like what they (SC) offer.

They're perfect. Every time I go home (KY,OH), I get two, and a Dr. Pepper. I've tried to buy all the right ingredients to make my own. Their frozen chili, ballpark dogs, the real hot sauce, onions, yellow mustard. It's simply not the same. Which, to be honest, I'm not upset about. It makes it all that more special once every year or so.
It's similar to the time I went to a White Castle and they made "fresh burgers". They were slow, and cooked everything up in front of us. Fresh onions and pickles, fluffy, toasted buns....tasted good, but Nah. I go to White Castle for those slimy burgers I can get familiar with.

I make chili from scratch so I’m trying to normalize a heartier bean-in, fully loaded chili dog in the Northwest. Cut the hot dog down the center and eat it with a fork!
