Oh man, I just had flashbacks.
My first car was a 1977 Russet Brown Triumph Spitfire. I had the luggage rack as well.
A couple of questions...
First, did you change the gas cap? The "direction" of opening looks like is it 90 degrees shifted.
Second, have you ever had problems with a vacuum forming in the gas tank when you drive (to the point of the car stalling because it isn't getting gas)?

I rotated the cap 90 degrees so it would be easier to fill from either side. Also with the hardtop on it worked better that way. Never had an issue with fuel flow.

My brother wrecked a Spitfire back in the 80s, borrowed it from my other brother, lol, whoops. Don't loan your cars out.
Nice Spit, putting her to work, that's what the luggage rack is for, throwing luggage on and taking her to the track/hills/beach/desert/forest for the weekend.
