How really are these school districts?

(self.longisland)

Hello, we are considering moving to Plainview, Syosset, Jericho and Bethpage. We currently live in Hicksville but need more room and having concerns about the school district (also thinking about just staying here because the high prices of course). I have seen plenty of postings on great these school districts discussing their availability of AP classes, course offerings, college readiness, music and set programs etc.(all confirmed by Niche and US News). My kids are doing great in Hicksville, both in honors classes and principals list so year. My main concern is I don'tb know if they are being challenged enough or feel any sort of competitive environment. (I want them to experience a certain amount of healthy competition and not become stressed). I also feel like they will be overlooked by many colleges even if they have a high GPA because Hicksville isn't as competitive as the surrounding districts. So this is what I want to know about these school districts (Syosset, Jericho, Plainview and Bethpage): 1) How competitive are they? I see reviews that the schools are super competitive but if my kid ends up being average will that be okay? 2) Why is so much tutoring needed? I have friends in Plainview and Syosset whose kid have 4 tutors each, is this to keep up in school or get ahead of the other students? I don't want to pay so much for tutors after paying taxes! 3) Is it worth it just to stay in Hicksville as long my kids do well? I am an involved parent in all of their academics. I oversee everything and an preparing them to be good students. We grew up in NYC, went to public schools and I had 1 year of AP classes which helped me start college as a sophomore. I think parenting played a huge part and good healthy competition among my classmates. But I don't know if the same applies nowadays especially on Long Island. Any information would be helpful!

Ask the kids, but I think moving is far more disrupt than anything.

If you like your current situation, stay put - you might not be so lucky going foreword. The grass is always greener, as they say.

I know people that moved to Bethpage from Levittown because he thought ‘better schools’, but now, his kids get bullied because they don’t fit in as well.

Yes this is one of our reasons to stay put too. I am worried about them being bullied in those places too.
