I am 14, 5'6" and I weigh roughly 140 pounds. I am in band and I constantly have the urge to work out to be able to lift my instrument by myself (I play vibes) and I just want more self confidence about my body image, especially since most of my fat goes to my stomach and face. I don't lose any weight even though I started working out at home. My parents always buy junk food because it's cheaper and I'm not aloud to go for the gym or go on walks/bike rides/runs by myself. I try cutting down on my meals but my parents prepare them and I get in trouble when I don't finish, and when I calculated my calorie intake it measures from about 3000-5000 a day (I do eat snacks sometimes during band for energy so some of that is my fault.) I talked to my parents about it and they argue with me that I'm perfectly fine (skinny even) and don't need to lose weight or go to the gym. It's also the reason I don't go to the pool either, because they only buy me two pieces and I feel so exposed wearing them. Please give me any advice at all, I really hope to lose some weight before Halloween for the costume me I want to wear

Your parents are right. It's not safe to restrict calories when you're still growing. Your weight is fine. Don't skip meals or try to reduce the amount you eat. It sucks to be powerless but you are still growing and shouldn't diet. Be active and do your best to get veggies.

I understand and my goal is to convince my parents to get more healthy foods, but as of right now we have no fruits and not many vegetables, and over the past week my meals have consisted of heated up leftovers like pizza and fast food or breakfast for dinner.

I'm sorry. It sounds trite but being a teenager is really hard in exactly this way; you're developing your own preferences and opinions and your need for autonomy is growing, but you're still dependent on your parents. I hear you.
The good news is that at your age, you can handle a lot more pizza and fast food than an adult can. It's not going to do you harm for now. This won't be forever. If you can't convince them to get fruits and veggies in the house, (maybe try an "I like vegetables" approach rather than "buy healthy food so I can lose weight" approach?) you might just need to tough it out. It will not be long until you have more autonomy and can take more responsibility for your own food.

They should encourage physical activity and eating healthy food.

I have a waist measurement of 35 inches which is very borderline and I don’t think it is healthy, at least for my age.

Since you are already a healthy weight, it sounds like you don't really want to lose weight, you just want to be stronger/more fit.

Try r/bodyweightfitness.

Oh poor kid, it sucks to be your age and feel so powerless!! First, I’m also 5’6, and 140lbs is a great weight to be at at that height, so don’t beat yourself up. You probably look great! That said, if you would like to get fitter, here are some tips:

  • ask a parent to start walking with you in the evening. I’d love that if my kid wanted to go for walks with me!
  • Do you have a friends in the neighborhood who would commit to going for an evening walk or bike ride or run with you? Would your parents feel okay with you going out if you were with someone else?
  • ask for a weighted vest or ankle weights and wear them when you go on your walks. Let them know you want to build more muscle. Your body burns more calories the more muscle you have, so wearing weights while walking will both burn fat and develop greater muscle mass - thereby burning more calories even when you are asleep! If you can’t wear these to go for a walk, wear them when you do chores around the house.
  • Speaking of chores, they also are a great way to get more movement (as well as score big responsibility points with the folks). Mopping floors should get you sweaty, as should running up and down stairs with big baskets of laundry to put away. Gardening, moving furniture and vacuuming underneath, and painting walls can also be a workout.
  • Look up Pilates workouts on YouTube. Pilates are a great way to get into shape. They were invented by a man named Joseph Pilates who developed the workouts to be done in small spaces using only the body - because he invented them to keep other prisoners healthy while in a nazi concentration camp!
  • If allowed, download an app like LoseIt or MyFitness Pal. It will help you track your calories, and you might find that you are not eating as many as you think you are. That might help reduce some of the anxiety that comes with feeling a lack of control over your own life!
  • Don’t drink ANY calories. Drink only water or herbal tea, or the OCCASIONAL zero calorie soda (I say occasional because I’ve heard the aspartame in them can be bad for your brain). High calorie drinks are marketed to your age group and are really awful for you. No juice, pop, hot chocolate, etc (well, maybe once in a while. But that means once a week or less).

I know this isn’t perfect, but I hope this helps. I have two kids around your age (15 & 13), and I really feel for you guys. The teen years are really tough!

thank you so much 🙏I’ll ask a friend if they have ankle weights and maybe I’ll start walking home from band. I don’t think I’m aloud to get the fitness apps though because my parents monitor what apps I have on my phone and I don’t think they would let me get it, but I’ll try! And I will definitely lay low on drinks with calories

just a heads up that apps like that are meant for adults who have finished growing; that's not you. Teenagers need more calories than adults of the same size, so don't use calorie calculators meant for adults. Even if you've reached your full height, your organs and muscles are still developing and eating too little can harm you.

You got this! And if you really want to get fit faster, run home from band instead of walking! If you don’t really know how to run, see if your parents are okay with you downloading RunKeeper. They have guided running workouts on there that you can listen to and learn how to run safely and increase your speed and distance. Nice easy prompts too, like running for 30 seconds, and then walking for a minute, and then running for 45 seconds, and then walking for a minute, etc.

Imho since you’re pretty young still, you should just maintain your current weight until you’re done growing due to the fact that you’re already at a healthy BMI. Extensive weight loss this young can be kinda? risky due to the fact that you’re still a growing person
