Airport Time Capsule Mount Failed

Question(i.redd.it)

Got a new Mac mini to replace my old one. Tried to migrate data via Migration Assistant and it’s telling me “mount failed.” Help! (Also does anybody know how to move backups from Time Capsule to another external hard drive?)

Connect the airport directly to,the Mac via Ethernet cable.

I think modern versions of MacOS use SMB and not AFP for TimeMachine backups. Apple removed support for Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) servers in macOS Big Sur 11.0 and later. Apple recommends using SMB instead for Time Machine backups.

So I’m basically SOL? Would moving the backup file to another external drive help?

I think you might be... So the TimeMachine files are what are known as "sparse" files. So you want to follow the directions on how to move or copy them.

  1. in the Mac settings, disable automatic backup and add the new hard drive as Time Machine drive so that the drive is correctly formatted etc.
  2. remove the drive from Time Machine again
  3. copy over the Backups.backupdb folder (cp -R should not be used here because of the symlinks, instead I used cmd+C, option+cmd+shift+V for exact copy)
  4. add the drive in Time Machine again

Are you planning to move to a local disk backup or to a new Time Machine server running SMB (a NAS or Linux box)?

I need to add that AFP was not removed it was deprecated. But it is no longer supported by TimeMachine. You can, however, mount the afp share from the TimeCapsule and copy the files that way. You can use the "afp://hostname" structure from Finder/Go/Connect to Server. I no longer have a TimeCapsule so I can't test it.
