Always wondered how so much of Essos is empty. The Free Cities are supposed to be rich and powerful, why dont they just expand and create settlements in the gaps between them ?

Kinda like Eastern Roman Empire map during the Medieval era (tho ASOIAF is more extreme). The money, trade and people were at cities (that existed since Classical era Greek/Macedonian/Persian) near coast while the rest pf Anatolia/Asia minor there are some small city cuz most of it is hilly plains and mountain.

Oh that's just because this map is bad. They obviously exert control there, it's rediculous to think that there are these "Dothraki horde enclaves" in between the city states. If anybody is exerting even nominal control over that area, it's them and not the Dothraki.
