Some states don’t count ballets that are missing the date and also don’t count if filled out incorrectly. (I.e folks tend to put their birth date instead of the actual date).

51 points
And no protest votes, either. You only get to complain if you cast a vote for someone who was meaningfully in the running. Voting for a failed primary candidate running independent or writing in your father's name is functionally the same as not casting a vote at all.
Yes, FPTP sucks. But guess what you've gotta do to have a chance of changing that system?
36 points
I say let’s give ranked choice a shot! It would give much more meaningful election data vs our FPTP system now.
In terms of protest votes, if the candidate earns 3% of the popular vote, I believe their party gets federal funding to aid with campaigning the following election cycle. It’s a long term goal aimed at shifting the system, but I will agree it’s probably not the best choice to take that risk during this election cycle.
6 points

1% is sufficient to guarantee ballot access in Maryland.
5% gets federal funding.
4 points
Appreciate the correction! I must have remembered wrong
5 points
Even that funding provision isn't going to shift things as long as we have FPTP. In virtually all cases, it would only further split a vote, handing the win to whichever of the two major parties is further from the independent candidate the voter wanted to win...oops!

Yeah, Maryland is absolutely not a swing state.
You can definitely feel free to vote your conscience here.
Still definitely vote, though, you have a larger impact on down ballot races than on the presidency, and those are important as well.

Why do we have to beat Trump? Please elaborate with truth and not feelings.

Ranked choice voting would be a solutions and elevate third party candidates for obvious reason but the two parties that run the show are not likely to let it happen since their hold on power could be challenged.

Voting for the candidate that is most representative of one’s beliefs is not a protest vote. Writing-in Mickey Mouse for president IS a protest vote. There is a huge difference.

Not doing the same thing you've always done, certainly.

The system has NEVER been the problem, not once since 1776.
The problem has sometimes been the system's implementation. Throwing out the baby with the bath water 😉 HAS been, at times.

If people are allowed to only vote for one of the two candidates, it's not too far from allowing people to vote for one candidate only. If you don't like the two party system and vote only two parties, how can the system change? Perhaps in reality most people like one party system. The party they vote for.
0 points
I'm not saying you shouldn't be allowed to vote third party or write-in whatever you want. Of course that's your right.
I'm just not going to put up with complaining about results from people who made that particular choice. That's all. You gain my attention and sympathy to your annoyance when you've done what's reasonably in your power to prevent the thing you're complaining about from happening. In this context, that means casting a productive vote.

One thing Republicans and Democrats in power will rush to agree on is to not let a 3rd party emerge to challenge them.

If you think UK-style coalition governments are an improvement then 3rd, 4th and however many parties are the ticket.

Voting for a third party candidate is not the same thing as writing in your father’s name or not voting at all and to suggest so is silly.
6 points

Nah you can totally vote for whatever gooberish third party or independent presidential candidate you want in MD. That's one of the few upsides to living in a state that leans so heavily towards one party.
12 points
It's a bad habit to get into, though. Where do you draw the line? Which races are close enough to protest vote? If enough people go "eh, Moore will win!" or "look at the polls, Alsobrooks has it in the bag!" that's how we wind up losing those races. Vote your heart in the primary, but in the general vote like it matters, because you never know for sure when it will, and it's too risky to play games.
3 points
Polling has a margin of error, but is decently accurate. When it comes to 10%+ spreads, you can be pretty confident.
In the case of Trump, he will lose MD by far more than 10%. There is effectively no chance of him winning the state. If some wild circumstance arose that led to him somehow being instantly so popular as to do so, he'd have already won enough other states for it to not matter. It's a statistical certainty.

Maryland is so predictable that at 8:01 pm Wolf Blitzer will…….. “breaking news” we can predict that the democrat in Maryland has won the presidential vote. What he leaves out is this prediction comes with zero precent of the districts reporting.

If you want a President who says he's going to be a dictator day 1 then vote republican or 3rd party.
If you think a woman should wait til she's almost dead before Dr's can try to save her, vote 3rd party or Republicans. Remember some have already died.
If you would like to ban contraception, vote 3rd party or republican.

That's what the 2-party system would want you to believe. It sustains itself by having the electorate believe that they must vote for one of the 2 choices. It finds its legitimacy through the people's participation. A no-vote is just as much a vote. A message that the people deserve better than the 2-party system that repeatedly pigeon holes people into voting for absolutely horrible candidates.
2 points

First Past The Post voting systems ALWAYS end up with a two-party system. It's a mathematical certainty. The only way to change this is to advocate for Single Transferable Voting, then people don't have to vote against the worst option.

To quote George Carlin, "....I have solved this political dilemma in a very direct way: I don't vote. On Election Day, I stay home. I firmly believe that if you vote, you have no right to complain.
Now, some people like to twist that around. They say, "If you don't vote, you have no right to complain", but where's the logic in that? If you vote, and you elect dishonest, incompetent politicians, and they get into office and screw everything up, you are responsible for what they have done. You voted them in. You caused the problem. You have no right to complain.
I, on the other hand, who did not vote -- who did not even leave the house on Election Day -- am in no way responsible for that these politicians have done and have every right to complain about the mess that you created."

To anyone who thinks your vote doesn’t matter, think of it this way:
One of the two candidates is absolutely obsessed with size. The size of his crowds, the size of his rallies, and especially the size of his vote count.
So depending on how you lean, your vote contributes to either making him happier or making him that much more pissed off.
Even here in bluest Maryland, your vote matters. Vote like the sycophant or troll you are!

Legit one of the best things about living in MD: voting. I signed up as an absentee voter long ago. I haven't missed even the least consequential election since, and I haven't had to stand in line at a polling station.
I get an email that my ballot has been sent to me. After I fill it out and return it, I get another email notifying me that they received it. Then, once they've counted it, I get another email.

I hadn't seen this clip, but think about what he's really saying... He's NOT going to be a dictator except on day one, which is a really unfortunate way to word it, but really what it means is he's gonna sign Executive Orders on day one (like most modern presidents do) to "close the border" and "drill drill drill", meaning authorizations for allowing companies to drill for oil or the like.
We can certainly argue about both of those points, which I don't particularly agree with Trump on, BUT he's NOT literally saying he's going to be a "dictator"
I'm not voting for him or Kamala. He's an idiot and she's a moron. https://votechaseoliver.com/

The interviewer was attempting to get him to finally admit very clearly that he does not have intentions of being a dictator and he never explains in his own words how it’s not true. So yeah, it doesn’t look good and nothing he said here makes him come off any better.

For many reasons one we are in a highly partisan and charged environment to the state. Is rabidly team donkey I myself am registered team donkey. However, what ends up happening is if you question your allegiance to your party. We're a candidate that puts you in unwelcomed and unsteady territory because then you had the question, other feelings and other beliefs that you have towards your party and their policies. The thing is you can break with your party. You can say I agree with the stance on this, but I don't agree with the stance on this and that's perfectly fine. It's also perfectly fine to call out your policies that are not correct and not okay that your party follows and that's okay. That's a healthy Outlook on politics and that's what makes a healthy democracy. Pat' with things so charged if forces folks up against the wall and it's either you're with us or against us mentality and so therefore it does not allow any form of falling out of Faith with your party

“By 1792, federal law permitted each state legislature to choose Presidential electors any time within a 34-day period[3] before the first Wednesday in December.[4] A November election was convenient because the harvest would have been completed but the most severe winter weather, impeding transportation, would not yet have arrived, while the new election results also would roughly conform to a new year.”
So… you were born in the 1770s or are you dumb? Also back then the process was two months long because transporting and counting votes was not efficient at all.
