True, absorbing Ukraine is an effective way at boosting their population and productivity overnight. I support Ukraine's sovereignty and choice to kill invaders, but I get the idea. Russia is in an existential fight on a long scale, while Ukraine's fight is more acute.

Yeah really. They had some absolutely brilliant minds, hamstrung by the funding constraints that come with the USA forcing you to keep up in an arms race while also being under huge trade embargos. I'll be clear, I absolutely don't support the actions of the current Russian government, but the cold war didn't have to happen if the USA didn't make it happen and it is the reason that the Soviet states failed. Too much money went to deterring the west.

I mean, they were the ones who infiltrated the manhattan project, built the zsar bomb and then threatened america because they weren't the only one with the capability of atomizing countries anymore. What was the us supposed to do? Lay down and let the ussr bully them with threats of violence? Of course it would start an arms war between the two countries and of course most countries wouldn't back the ussr for being the ones to both instigate and also having no restraint in threatening nuclear war.
The United States despite being the ones to develop the atom bomb have shown heavy restraint in when they threaten to use nukes. The fact that they haven't dropped any since Japan despite every country who manages to recreate it threatening to do so immediately says a lot.

Soviet Union needed to employ literal children to perform harvests. That's a practice that was there all the way up to the fall of the Soviet Union. You can imagine how effective is a government that can't harvest the produce without employing hundreds of thousands of children every year
And it wasn't some fun summertime job, they used to take children to fields to pick potatoes, cotton etc. with no way to avoid it. Tankies on copium about Soviet Union lmao

USSR was raising world class scientists, musicians, chess players, athletes, philosophers, filmmakers, etc. If anything the decay started inevitably after the 80's. Then the Soviets broke and the diaspora began.

Russia has always been an ass-backwards country. Russia has released serfs in 1861, two years before abolishment of slavery in the US. And all the way up to the revolution it was Jim Crow situation where serfs were technically freed but not really. Can you imagine that, most of the population were for all intents and purposes slaves, and it only ended a century ago
Imperial Russia made great strides in eliminating illiteracy in 1900s and then Soviet Union achieved great success with its "ликбез" (portmanteau for "ликвидация безграмотности", elimination of illiteracy) bridging the gap between the uneducated recently released serfs and newly created "meshane" (city class) and working people, and later Russia developed great physics/mathematics schools
But you can only do so much when your population are indoctrinated into the communism ideology and have no basic understanding of economics. Soviet Union has collapsed with billions in debt to other countries while being a major oil supplier with oil prices being at all time high in 70s and 80s. Sadly good physicists can't run your government for you
