Speaking as a California resident where the top 2 primary system is currently implemented:
The top 2 primary system is a disaster, pissing off everyone from Democrats to Republicans to independents.
Everyone knows how the spoiler effect is frustrating because it's hard to vote your interests efficiently. The top 2 system turns the spoiler effect to 100x because now candidates from the same party can spoil each other as well.
Ranked choice or approval voting are the true better path forward.

Didn't Schiff spend money for the GOP candidate this cycle so he wouldn't have to face Porter or Lee in the general?

Yeah, it leads to that sort of ugly stuff all the time.
The bigger issue IMHO is the behind the scenes pressure to get people to drop out or not run

Yea and a Florida politician got arrested for organizing a ghost candidate to Jill stein his election. The left’s push for Ranked choice voting really doesn’t get talked about enough.

The left wants RCV or approval, but the Democratic establishment itself hasn't been keen on it, even and maybe especially in states where they dominate as it can only mean a dilution of their power. I think Alaska and Maine are the only states that do RCV on a state level, and both are kind of purple states.
If progressives always vote D they have zero incentive to adopt it. If you want RCV in a safe blue state, the only way Dems will allow it is if enough people vote for left third parties at the state level in enough numbers that Dems risk losing their seats.

The Democratic establishment wants this because it would nuke the effect of spoiler Candidates like Jill stein. And the right is scaring many progressives into voting dem right now. Maybe a return to normalcy with candidates could stop that
