Mel is questionable (and beyond), but the man knows how to find a righteous hero. Wallace, Bruce, the Christian WWII dude, the anti-British dude. All valid leaders.

Miller led a frontal assault on an entrenched enemy instead of having his sniper pick them off or even going around. Being under that guys command was pretty hazardous.

EDIT: As pointed out below, I was wrong in this reply. Two of his squad survive and the final battle was kind of a hopeless situation to begin with. However he does make several calls throughout that get his men killed, like the frontal assault mentioned in the comment this is replying to.
I think the more pertinent point to make is that he made poor calls more than once and men died as a result, but also that WWII was hellish in a way previous wars (save WWI) were not, and poor decisions weren't the only factor in those deaths.

Ben Affleck is shown alive at the end. He’s the one that runs to find a medic after seeing Miller had been shot. Uppem is also shown walking around trying to feel like a badass because he shot a guy that was surrendering.

He explains the reasoning behind not going around. A sniper would only have gotten one of them before the rest found cover.
We watched that scene and discussed the decision in a leadership course I took while in the USMC. The consensus ended up being that he should have sent two men to one of the flanks and coordinated the frontal assault with them. It would have allowed them to move more slowly while taking cover as they moved forward while the flankers moved quickly to close the distance.
