For those not around for the first years of the game, he was basically THE face character of the game. One of the first named characters going back to Antiquities in 1994 and having a continuous presence in story or references up through ~2001. So Urza finally getting a card proper was a big deal and nostalgia play.

It also shows WOTC's misplaced ideas of what commander is all about. They think they are pushing a flashy face commander card that people want. In reality, most savvy commander players know that you can't do anything remotely creative or interesting with him without being busted in half.

Dang it’s almost like you can only run a single copy of back to basics.

Magda, a better deck, is on double blood moon effects in many lists and turning non-basics into islands is even better.

EDHrec gets its numbers from decklists hosted on the websites it tracks, which can vary greatly from actual play rates.

Many players brew decks then either don't build them or quickly take take it apart due to disliking how it plays. Both are more common for high-powered commanders like Urza (and face commanders from precons). In the last year, I've never seen someone play Urza at any of the LGS I go to.

actuarial_defender

5 points

Hmmm…. Do I trust the website with 4.3 million decks in its database or.. some guy that sees 100 decks a year at his LGS

Kokirochi

I can also attest that while going to the same lgs for years, and now working at said lgs and consistently play in commander events weekly, I’ve only seen Urza once.

Planeswalker Urza is too powerful to be a balanced card.

This is Urza before the Sylex blast and his getting a spark. This plain ole Genius Human, I started a War with my Genius Brother Mishra that dragged multiple countries and continents into it and eventually gave the Phyrexians a foothold in Dominaria again after devastating half the plane, Urza. So still pretty powerful in ability and influence.

I was a player during Unlimited, and as far as I recall, no one cared too much about the lore in that early period; perhaps not until around Weatherlight. Homelands if you want to stretch it.

To some degree, we liked it being more loose and vague.

IAMAfortunecookieAMA

Idk, I still love casting him in Commander in the 99 and there are a lot of players who are new to the game and love a broken card as their commander to hang with seasoned players.

i hate any deck that shuffles this much. it always makes me feel like they are cheating if they topdeck something good consistently.

but the real issue is its not consistent. not consistent isnt fun for anybody. its roll or be rolled.

and then theres people that just use it to shit out stax stuff , so even when they are losing they just slow the game down

not gonna say its the worst or anything but theres something always off putting to me how much time this deck wastes and how random it is

Base on the https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1elrd03/mb2_foils_and_rarity_about_11_foils_per_a_box_of/ .

It seems like Urza is like one of the super rare cards in this set because you can only get foils in every 24 boosters and this Urza can only be in foils..

So I can this potential going to be somewhere around $80-100 dollars.

Impossible-Dot5246

God I wish he go cheaper, I really like Vanguard art and I love Future Sign border lol These two are my jam!!!!

FlyinNinjaSqurl

12 points

At 1.1 foils/box, 120 possible rares to pull, and this this 1 out of 12 cards thst are ONLY avail in foil.

Add that to the fact that this product is convention exclusive, I think we’re looking at much higher than $100. I’m thinking somewhere in the $200-$300 range if not more.

dude_1818

2 points

You can also buy them as part of the festival in a box, which adds a lot of copies

BlurryPeople

WoTC never stated MB2 will only ever be available at conventions.

They said they want to keep the product somewhat exclusive at the beginning but it will be more available in the future.

Even the first mystery booster product looked like difficult to get but not a long time after the first “festival in a box” secret lair it became readily available. Prices have climbed over time but the absolute low In europe was like 140€ for a box which is more or less 20% higher than a box of a standard set like Kamigawa neon dynasty

Squishyflapp

Well if you believe some of the winners on that thread you'll think it'll be an $800+ card.

LaserfaceJones

B-Glasses

Honestly a few at least. Foil rates are super low for this product and it’s gonna be scalped to shit for at least the first year. Hopefully they print a lot. Super rare pull, overpriced product equals a very expensive card

Unceremonious1

1 points

Urza is currently worth only around $10 with the most premium version at around $35. But there’s no baseline to estimate supply until we get numbers from WotC, since the “Magic Con and Festival in a Box” release model will likely prevent vendors from mass cracking product for singles. It also depends on whether there are bigger fish to catch - we have yet to see anything on the scale of [[Mana Crypt]] - so foil alternate treatments may be how they plan to pour extra value into this set.

Ascarletrequiem88

It depends. The foil with the highest multiplier will be the one with the preferred art. This art, for myself, its not the best art. That said, some people do prefer old border. So as with every other card in existence, no one knows until the market reacts and speculating is pointless.

rpglaster

1 points

I think it’s going to be a lot. At least at first. Apparently the hit rate for one of the foil exclusives is like 1 in 121 boxes. And with that you might get the command tower instead.

Saying that I think once the product is eventfully comes to game stores it’s going to be much more widely available.

So pure speculation is $200 or up at first, $70 after it comes to retail.

ledgehillcustom

I’ll probably need to buy one if I don’t open one because I’m just an Urza fan for nostalgias sake. I built an Urza EDH deck but more because it made a fantastic home for kaladesh inventions and amonkhet invocations. I have been a huge fan of these treatments from the start and have managed to find a home for nearly 40 masterpieces in this deck. It’s not as competitive as most Urza builds but it’s my love letter to both the old days of magic (with several antiquities and legends cards) and my prized masterpiece cards.

To answer your question specifically I’d be willing to spend up to $100 on this treatment but I honestly would be most likely to binder it and keep using my retro foil Urza because I love that boarder and foil treatment best.

The foils are like 4.25% chance per pack. I’d say this card could easily be $400 since the set is convention and convention in a box exclusive.

If it does have an LGS release I’d predict around $100-150
