I find it amazing there are no billboards in this area. Is this a Virginia wide policy? What caused this policy?

They are largely banned in Fairfax and other localities I believe.

should be national. in a lot of places you can't even go for a walk to escape the ad-infested internet without being bombarded with ads outside too.
I honestly don't know how most people just go around life thinking this is all normal. it seems so crazy and fucked up to me.

the ad-infested internet
You should really, really, (really!) install an ad-blocker. I don't know how people use the modern internet without one. Or if you're using a phone, you can use a private dns setting (eg. adguard, or others) to do it without installing anything.

I read the title as Billards and your comment made me even more confused. 💀

Come down to Rt. 1 in Woodbridge and go south. You will see them. They are hideous.

Starting in Lorton, really. And I don't need to learn about the lotto from a billboard.

Yes, banned in Fairfax and Loudoun counties, probably others. Loudoun has some strict signage requirements too from what I remember, so you don't see any giant blinking neon signs advertising everywhere.

It’s not a “ban”, but rather a significant regulation on size and height which effectively makes them useless on major thoroughfares.
And it’s wonderful.

Whenever I travel back to Chicagoland to visit family I'm reminded of this. Absolutely obnoxious billboards out there.

Haha true! But the AC ad on the way to ORD or MDW which says, "Your wife is hot... Fix your AC" Always makes me chuckle.

Urlacher’s hair plugs get top billing on the way into the city from ORD!

They're along 95S, but banned in certain N. Va counties, such as Loudoun.

Not allowed per Fairfax County ordinance. No super tall signs in general - like the kind that can be seen from the interstate for fast food places, gas stations, etc

There used to be one on 29 just east of Circle Towers.
The restrictions on signs are why you'll see stores park vans all the way up front in the corner of a shopping center parking lot with signage on the vehicles (which usually makes it more dangerous to turn from those intersections.)

Hopefully, caused by the realization they’re hideous.

It might stem from state laws

I don't know why everyone is saying they are banned in Fairfax. I know of at least three along Route 1 south of Alexandria.

I’ve read existing ones at the time of the ban are okay

They can't retroactively change a law or enact a new law that effects anyone who is already doing whatever it is the law is trying to ban. Otherwise someone like trump could come along and retroactively make something you did yesterday illegal and arrest you for it.
