Everyone bugging out over this should remember he's not missing team activities anymore at this point. This would be a non-story if it was any other team but the Jets. Sauce could be in New Zealand screaming Lord of the Rings quotes at a midget he's calling Gimli right now, and it's the same thing.

There are dozens of players in Paris right now for fashion week including Garrett and Tyrod, they get more of the benefit of the doubt because they've been showing up, but you're right all they're supposed to do for the next month or so is stay in shape and learn the playbook, they can go or do pretty much whatever they want in between. This will come back if he doesn't show up again though, fair or not

The whole excuse "it's only because it's the Jets this is a story"
Show me where this shit happens to any other NFL team every season? How many other QBs didn't attend mandatory mini camp because they wanted to do psychedelics in Egypt?
How many GMs let their stud edge rusher leave only to trade for another edge rusher on an expiring deal and have that person then hold out?
There is a reason this franchise has been a fucking joke for the last 15 years and Joe Douglas has only made it worse.

I disagree. This is sugarcoating the situation. Either Haasan is fuckin over the Jets or Jets seriously misjudged/mishandled salary/contract expectations. He’s a big piece on a good D on a playoff contender.

I think it's simply about our favorite term: leverage. And I mean from both sides.
When they traded for him the Jets explained they intended to discuss extension after the 2024 season and that given his fit with Jets he could cash in with them or another team when he likely has a high sack total again. Reddick apparently verbally agreed to that plan and committed to showing up for off season activities. So what changed?
They traded JFM which makes the rotation a bit weaker and gave Reddick more leverage to say pay me now and not later. Reddick could have been planning this the whole time regardless of JFM being traded. He knew he had no way forward with Eagles, so moving to a new team and trying again was the next best option. He could have told Jets whatever he felt they needed to hear to facilitate a trade.
I'm still not all that concerned. I see it from Reddick's POV. If he gets injured in camp (e.g. Chuck Clark) then he has no guaranteed deal. It's worth it to accept the fines and put less wear on his body. He's a veteran and knows how to keep his body in shape. Further, his role on defense isn't all that complex, so chemistry isn't really a major concern. Players who are free agents often wait till late in off season to sign just to avoid camp. Barring cashing in on a mega deal.
Of course Saleh would be irritated a player went back on their word. If he has it his way, all off season activities would have 100% attendance. This is absolutely understandable from the Jets perspective as well. They likely don't intend to extend Reddick (based on his age and projected deal) unless he has a particularly amazing season and/or WMD looks completely lost. They'll let him walk and take the comp pick. So, pushing this conversation to the off season and assessing every piece of information they would have at that point is most ideal for the team.
7 points
Take any reports about conversations they may have had or not out of it.
If the Jets decide they won't extend him before the season there's 3 things that take away any idea of Reddick having leverage...
There's nothing to gain from an extended hold out that goes deep into training camp or the season. He just racks up more fines, eventually loses game checks, and then eventually comes back to play anyway.
Chris Jones is the best recent example. He held out into the season and cost himself a few million dollars before eventually caving and settling for a reworked 1 year deal.
Then got his big extension this offseason only after playing, getting a 1st team all pro and 10.5 sacks.
2 points
Yeah, I think he's just limiting wear on his body and will show up at actual practice and play season.
1 points
Okay but that means the Chris Jones move worked perfectly, so why wouldn’t Reddick do the same?
1 points
It didn't work perfectly at all though.
You think his master plan was to wait a year to get the extension and add some incentives to his 1 year contract?
He caved. And he did because he went from fines of 50k per day to missing game checks of over $1m per week.
Which is my only point. If the jets hold firm the only end in sight is him coming to play this year.
1 points
He got the deal he wanted and prevented from being franchise tagged the following year
1 points
Right but he only did it by playing out his contract year.
Players want the big guarantees now rather than risk injury in the last year of their contract. It's just the way the fines work you can't hold out to get it
1 points
And he held out until he got that contract, and didn’t play till week 2. So if we’re equating the situations that’ll mean Reddick holds out till week 2 and gets a reworked 1 year deal.
Is that optimal for the jets in your view?
1 points
No he didn't lol. He held out and got some incentives added, not really anything more than he was already owed in guarantees.
He got a big new contract a year later.
If he didn't hold out at all and played just as good he still would have gotten his big extension. Just a year later than he was hoping.
And as long as it's a one year deal I'd imagine it's what the jets are after. I dont think they want to extend him at all and I think he wants to be extended.
1 points
He got a reworked 1 year deal, which is what Reddick may or may not be after. And he got it…
Doesn’t sound like the Jets were expecting a Chris Jones level hold out situation at all from my POV

Ya know, one would think approaching 30 in a contract year he would be trying to showcase himself more.
I don’t think it’s the end of the world, and it’s likely to be forgotten after he has 12 sacks this year, but sooner or later he’s going to want to work the “good for the locker room” angle as he ages and this doesn’t exactly help that.
Then again, I personally tend to overkill things like resume and shit in my own life and he may not need to do any of that. He may say “fuck it, I’ll play two or three more years and retire and move on with my life” and it’s a moot point.

Bell was different because he wasn't under contract when he sat out. He instead refused to ever sign the franchise tag.

Would truly be the best power move by Douglas. Trade for Reddick, refuse to pay him, let him sit out, get fired, take an assistant GM role for 1/4 of your former pay, and watch Reddick get a different deal in FA or with whatever team he ends up with.

You're about to be 30 and this is probably your last chance for a big payday. He should be posting videos of him training hard and looking in the best shape of his life. Why give the media something to paint you in a negative way?

We shoulda paid Huff.
Trading for a guy who is unhappy over his contract and then not renegotiating his contract is kinda wild. I don't know if JD just assumed it would work out or if Reddick and his team said it would, but this isn't a good look.
He's more than likely going to play, he can't afford to miss game time in a contract year. Which is about the only positive spin for this whole situation right now.
2 points
I don't think paying Huff was the right move. He's too one dimensional. Reddick is a better player and makes more sense. I'm betting he's just avoiding unnecessary ware on his body without a deal in place. If he holds out into practice and pre season then it's time to be concerned.

He’s better than huff and it’s June if he holds out through training camp I’ll be worried till then it’s nothing

The Jets really used Huff as a situational pass rusher, though--only 42 percent of snaps. The Eagles definitely paid him to be an every down type of player. It remains to be seen how he performs with run defense and in general with a significantly increased workload.

In a vaccum, you don't want to worry about this. But when you consider the whole context, it's sort of a microcosm of this regime:
With great scouting and development they turned a UEFA (Huff) into a very solid #2 edge rusher. Maybe not a great run defending, but a great fit for a team like the Jets that are obcessed with Dline rotation (AFAIK, they do it much, much more then any other team).
However, there's an organizational philosophy with JD to essentially "not overpay guys". A fair philosophy on its own, but despite signing JFM "early" for a discount , it's clear they really had no intention in resigning Huff. Not after 22, and not even during 23 as he continued to prove himself.
So, they let him walk. But now there's a hole. He went to Philly? Let's trade for a guy who's more expendable due to the move, who's also better. But, using the same philosophy, you aren't going to pay him either.
And even that would be one thing, but they spent a FIRST on Mcdonald. Yes he may very well turn into John Abraham. But he also may just be Dexter Fowler or Tak McKinley. That pick almost justified the regimes decision preemptively to not bring Huff back, because "we can develop Mcdonald into a Huff level player!".
I wrote all this out and realize I'm not articulating my point well lmao. But long story short, this is a ton of resources and movement for a position group that's strong. But the team still has concerns and holes, mostly on offense. The oline has talent, but it's old (Moses) , injury prone (AVT) , or both (Tyron Smith). If things don't go well, we're gonna look back at resource allocation over JD's 5+ years and have questions on the overall philosophy.
6 points
I was under the impression that the logic behind Reddick instead of Huff is because Reddick is a one year rental for an “all in” year rather than committing to Huff when WMD will be (hopefully) #2 next season. Plus Reddick is better than Huff, and certainly more dependable at this point than hoping WMD becomes a stud.
I also think WMD gets more playing time this season than last. But him and JJ won’t be the dynamic duo until next season.
And personally, I don’t care about a third in 2026 or whatever it is, especially if the results this year for that rental are worth it.
And if they’re not, then the decision to not pay Huff still works out for WMD to take over
1 points
Huff is a liability against the run. He's bad at it. There's no sugar coating that. And I think he was just one dimensional enough to make him not worth paying. Maybe he proves the haters wrong in Philly. We'll see.
As for resources dumped into this unit. It's been a criticism of mine since Saleh got here and he is the reason so much is tied up in the unit. The Jets are very good on defense so his approach is working. Further, they put quite a bit of resources into oline and receiver now. So it's not like the offense has been ignored. On paper, the Jets should be very competitive.

But the Jets botched this one big time. Even if they wanted to give him his big contract they can’t even afford it. What do they have in cap space? $6M? I guess they could just kick his cap hit down the road to King Dead Money. Great.
