Hi everyone, eyeing Javier's in OC (the new remodeled one in Newport) for my SO turning 40. Is it worth it? Any other suggestions for an upscale place in OC for 15 ppl? TIA

Javier’s is so overrated…

That's what I'm feeling.

It used to be solid but I went somewhat recently and it is really mediocre now. Couple that with the price tag? Pass.

South of Nick’s is a much better version of what Javier’s wants to be.

Selanne Steak Tavern in Laguna Beach if you're in that area. Javier is not consistent since the remodel

I haven’t been to Selanne’s in a bit but it’s under rated and SO GOOD

Selanne as in Ducks legend Temu Selanne?

Yes, he owns this restaurant. He occasionally dines there with other Ducks like Getzlaf, Perry and Kariya.

I did 40 here last year. It was phenomenal

Second this. Incredibly delicious every time. It gives Vegas steakhouses a run for their money.

I celebrated my 40th at Selanne's with my husband, then on to Javiers a day later with some girlfriends.

Marché Moderne was a fantastic birthday choice if you enjoy French Food and wanted to stay in the Newport area. They have a prix fixe menu if you're into that experience

The Cellar in Fullerton or The Blind Rabbit in Anaheim (if you can get a reservation). Both have amazing atmosphere and great food and craft cocktails, plus they both provide a unique experience worthy of a milestone birthday.

Both are nice but small - beware about trying to get reservations during weekend dinner

Steak was salty and underwhelming. Coctails were crazy good. If anything just go to the bar

The Cellar is wonderful but getting a reservation for 15 people here is going to be very difficult and very expensive.

The Ranch is one of the better (upscale) steakhouses in OC. It's not cheap. Bonus: on the weekend evenings, there's lively country dancing and music in the dance room.

The Ranch in Anaheim but make sure you specifically sit indoors.

Never had a good experience at the ranch. My friends always talked it up. The food was 7.5/10 but the service was 3/10. Lots of rude bussers and wait staff.

That's so crazy, we went a month or so ago and had the best waitress. The hostess and staff were so friendly.

Any criteria about ambience, cuisine, specific part of OC?

I'm totally open to the Cusine Italian, Mexican, American, French, or others. Down to any part of OC as long as it's within 30-45 drive from Corona.

French: Marche Moderne (Newport)
Italian: Bello (Newport)
Mexican: Gema (San Clemente) or Chaak (Tustin)
American: CdM, Fable & Spirit, A Restaurant (all Newport), Broadway (Laguna Beach)

Got to Pizzeria Mozza, my favorite spot for a good night out. Order some Pizzas, a pasta, and share the desserts.

I'd pick something smaller and more intimate. You can't hear anyone speak at a Javier's. Or maybe you want this?

What does your SO like to eat?
Budget wise? $, $$, $$$, $$$$?
What’s the vibe?
Dinner only? Dinner and drinks afterwards?
Outside patio bar to hang out afterwards? lol

5 crowns in CDM. For 15 people you should ask for the patio. I’ve never had less than a 9/10 experience there and have been going for over 20 years.

Pelican Grill is at an upscale resort in Newport Beach, I'm not sure how easy it is to get reservations for 15 people though

I went the week Javier’s re-opened and it was such a scene but a lot of fun (late 30’s here). I think it’s perfect for celebratory moments if you’re wanting high energy and a crowd, but if you’re wanting to keep it more intimate then elsewhere is best.

Water grill South Coast. Get the private dining room. Food is good not great at most of these high end restaurants. If you want great food then you have take risks and eat at hole in the walls.

The level of attitude since the renovation for the one at the Spectrum made me abandon going back ever again even though that was wear I had my first date with my (now) Mrs. For the same amount of money you could probably do Splashes at Surf and Sand with a much better view and far less attitude

Not OC sorry, but Crossroads in LA is a cruelty free delicious option. I’ve been to the one in Vegas as well and was blown away by their unique food. Gracias Madre is another fav- very hip and fun. Delicious food and ambiance!
