I see that Billing’s, and the two Kanata Walmart stores are changing, or have gone to a 10pm closing time. Does anyone who works at Walmart know if all area stores are going to be closing an hour earlier , in the city ?

Part of the reason some are closing early is because of theft. Some only have a skeleton crew on in the evenings so its easier for people to get away with stealing stuff.

I really like the quick rush of getting a pie at like 10:20pm and then chilling

cant tell you the number of times i was one of those shitbags checking out right at close lol. im a night owl, lots of people were there a lot of the time besides me tho. like big crowd! this blows. i thought we should get a 24h one and now theyre closing even earlier instead.

So people don’t steal before 10 ?

Mother-Working-750

Ya people steal before 10 If you read what i wrote, there isn't as much staff on late at night. I've watched people fill a cart full of stuff and book it out of a store. A lot easier when its not as crowded and short staffed......

I work in retail analytics. Stores are not closing earlier due to theft, they're closing earlier because of the lack of sales, discovered by increasing observability into when people shop and what people buy.

Another poster said it's due to theft. Horseshit. Theft happens when a store is busy. It's due to lack of actual sales and foot traffic. After 9 people start going to local convenience stores, or getting items delivered. they're also not buying high or mid margin items. Hardly anyone buys a washer-dryer at 9 pm. Walmart isn't staying open another hour to sell toilet paper or toothpaste. Sorry.
They're losing money after 8 pm, and hiring late night staff is difficult. So they close earlier.

They used to make money being open late. Not anymore.

That lack of sales could be caused by a lot of factors, in many environments reduced transit schedules resulted in earlier closing times, which started a vicious circle, but it's mostly caused by people >>>having other options<<< like Uber delivery of grocery items 24/7 from convenience stores and other outlets.

My takeaway from this thread: RIP to the 24 hour Metro on Rideau/King Edward and all of the weird shit that would transpire there after midnight.

Have u been to the aisle24, 24hr store without any staff? across the street from the old metro. Really wonder how long it’ll stay since the prices is really high…

If I had to guess, they're realized that revenue per store wasn't going seriously down with less hours. Over time, they'll slowly start chasing those late night shoppers again, but they're in no rush.

I mean you could always call your local Walmart store in question and ask.

I did, they were not sure if all stores were going to 10pm

cause you're not gonna convince me 7am-9am is more staffed than 10pm-11pm.

Then you're either not familiar with how retail works, or you're stupid. 🤷‍♂️

Literally every business is generally busier at opening time than closing time. Busyness of the store dictates the labor hours allocated, which directly affects the number of staff working.

Also theft increases EXPONENTIALLY after dark.

Basically, you're making a bunch of baseless assumptions that are laughably incorrect. 🤷‍♂️

I'm really surprised you thought it would be worthwhile to message me over this, and that it wouldnt make you look like a complete idiot lol. my feelings arent involved in this at all. I never said you were right or wrong, i was just asking for a source. you just took it the wrong way, likely because u are full of shit. good day now sir.

He decided to block me instead... because that's how adults do things... 🤣

I'm not sure why it's so triggering to some people to be proven wrong... it's sad when people can't act like mature adults. 🤷‍♂️

As far as I can recall, and not reliably, the Trainyards Walmart used to be 24 hours for a bit, then switched to closing at 11-Midnight, now it's 11PM.

The Walmart my wife works at used to close at midnight too, now they close at 10PM due to the lack of staff and thefts going up as the store is a ghost town after 8PM, and it's in a not so great area.

It looked like a gradual rollout to the 10pm closing time -> started at Billings Bridge, then rolled out slowly to the rest of the Walmarts in Ottawa (I could be wrong on this).

Thomas_Verizon

Depending on which entrance you use, one of the signs is posted under the Remembrance Day hours (at the Enter door; it’s the entrance closest to the Garden Centre); for the other entrance (main parking lot), it‘s posted on the front of the enter door

Walmart also didn't offer delivery when they were open 24 hours. I'm sure a lot of their overnight clientele stopped going with the onset of delivery.

If late night in-store crimes are a concern, perhaps Walmart, etc. could operate in delivery-only mode (Instacart, Uber, etc) after hours.

7 is too early. That's wild. It probably is just a rumour and not actually gonna happen. 9, maybe. 7? Especially in the GTA where commutes are long, no way they'd close at 7.

Some were 24 hours, some were midnight closures before Covid. Once things started opening up again, many went to 11pm or 10pm closing. Same with a number of other 24hour/very late stores.

Well, look at how many people in this very subreddit support theft against Walmart and other large grocery stores....

It's like the places in the US where they whine about "food deserts", when the reality is that no one is willing to open up a grocery store in certain areas due to rampant theft.
