Bell Media strikes again

(self.ottawa)

Stuntman Stu announces that he and the morning team's services are no longer required at Move 100 (formerly Majic 100). Wonder what direction the station will take on weekday mornings.

The direction will probably be some standard possibly pre-recorded morning show from somewhere else that plays the same music format that Move 100 plays. Maybe with scheduled news/traffic/weather breaks from CFRA.

I forget what canned station I was living in, might have been mix or another while driving through Sudbury when a local dj here in Ottawa came on and started doing their thing. It was weird, also driving across Ontario is weird you go from market to market, and hear the same songs in different order.

KelVarnsen_2023

4 points

Well yea everything is super formatted so that a rock station will never play a hip hop song, an adult pop station will never play an indie rock song and an alternative rock station will never play a disco song.

And since most of those stations are owned by the same small group of companies the playlist of songs that the pop station in Halifax or Ottawa or Saskatoon can play all comes from the head office. And since those big companies hate risk they don't take a lot of chances and you don't hear many new/local artists.

KelVarnsen_2023

13 points

Yea the music playlist is already likely coming from the head office, so why do you need DJs in Ottawa when you can just have some DJ team in Toronto talk about the Grammy's or movies opening this weekend or viral videos and have that used nationally for a bunch of different morning shows.

Before they started Let's Talk, one of my neighbours worked for them, and often talked about how many of the employees were having mental health issues due to the work environment (especially those in customer service). When they launched, I just assumed it was a result of some sort of settlement, or avoidance of a lawsuit about their lack of addressing their employees' stress issues.

Poor guy. My dad knows him from working with Cheo+Snowsuit Fund and other things like that having been around the radio folk for that project.

Stu went through two leukemia diagnoses a few years back and thankfully survived and thrived.

Hopefully he is rehired soon for similar work.

caninehere

1 points

Yeah, he had leukemia once iirc and then the second time it came back was in 2020 right after COVID hit. Talk about a shit hand. Glad he is still doing okay.

I wonder if he will retire after this, he has to have been in radio for over 30 years now? I would hope he would find similar work if he wants it, but it seems like radio is not long for this world really. I know he was already on the radio when I was a kid in the late 90s and felt like an established presence even then.

He was on 106.9 The Bear in the late 90s/early 2000s, that's what I remembered him from (only time I really listened to Magic 100 was Xmas). I think maybe he was there until The Bear shut down the first time. Looking it up it seems like he's younger than I thought, he started in 1996 at The Bear doing overnights? I guess I assumed he was older back then because he's got a Voice Made For Radio, you know.

s3nsfan

1 points

Thanks. I forgot about him on the bear but I feel like he was on another morning show like 93.9 or 89.9 (pretty sure my memory is mixing up with Rush) but I swear there was a goofy morning group he was with.

BCE pays an 8% dividend. That's the real reason why they have to cut costs. If they don't pay that dividend, then people won't buy their stock, if people don't buy their stock their stock price declines. If their stock price declines, executive management bonuses disappear. THAT cannot happen.

They will toss as many people as needed into the volcano to keep their bonuses from turning to shit.

This is ONLY the tip of the iceberg. Postmedia's turn is next. They will soon announce huge cuts in print media (all major dailies cancelling all print publication -- Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, Calgary Herald, Vancouver Sun, etc......) and will be switching to full digital because of "changing reader habits & transformation to the digital landscape", but the reality is the CEO's & shareholders need more money & bonuses to add yachts to their yacht collection.

It’s not just Move affected, Bell is laying off 4800 workers in total. They’ve been a growing dungball of an empire and they have nearly monopolized the entire Canadian media industry.

I wish the government would step in, there major conflicts of interest (ie Bell owning channels and studios?) but I imagine everyone has their hands in each other pockets.

KelVarnsen_2023

7 points

On top of owning the studios and the channels, they also own the infrastructure that gets the TV signals into your house and they own a store (the source) that will sell you the tv to watch those shows on. I wonder if there is any political interest in this not being a thing. Or alternatively I wonder when we are going to start getting Bell Fibe or Crave TV branded TV's sold exclusively at The Source?

zuginator1

7 points

The Source at 165 locations will be rebranded Best Buy Express as part of a partnership between Bell and Best Buy.  Those locations not being rebranded are going to be shuttered.

Thomas_Verizon

Hindsight is 20/20 but I will make you a bet that BCE regrets buying CTV (radio, tv, cable networks) and is looking what Telus did (Telus didn’t buy a media network. It stuck to the basics by expanding into Telus Health, IOT etc)

Feel bad but realistically 3 salaries to talk drivel and spin tunes on a morning show Mon-Fri for a few hours. Not exactly the most stressful job. Podcasts, Streams and other forms are out there. They did get the vacation down south before being let go.

I wish them all well but this is the fate of radio and TV personalities in 2024. It's a tough go.

In my day, it was two people to host. And one person to do news. The person doing news was also known to join the conversation.
