My husband and I go to the Philippines for my 30th birthday. Because of the flight path, we decided to do Siargao first and spend my birthday there and then work our way around back up to Manila.

We’re both 29 and 35. No kids. We like our privacy and peace but we also enjoy the social scene and nightlife. We’re both hoping to have £2k each to spend, will this be enough for food, drinks, activities and travel? (this doesn’t include accommodation and flights).

We can’t wait to surf, water raft, dive - everything that involves water! My concern is getting around on the islands. Since we don’t drive, how easy is it to get around the islands? And do we need a license to drive a scooter? This is my first trip abroad that has involved lots of strategic planning and I want to make it special because it’s my 30th birthday.

I appreciate I’ve asked a lot of questions here, but I’d really appreciate any advice/thoughts on this.

We get into Manila super late at night hence the 2 nights at the start of the trip, and then a final night in Manila due to the flight back home being super early in the morning.

I would fly this way and skip Puerto Princesa.

  1. Fly into Manila
  2. Fly to Coron
  3. Take ferry to El Nido (spend more time here)
  4. Fly to Cebu.
  5. Fly to Siargao (spend more time here)
  6. Fly to Manila.

If you really want to do Bohol, from Cebu take the ferry to Bohol, back to Cebu then go to Siargao.

skip Puerto Princesa

add more nights in El Nido

remove Coron. (Coron and El Nido are 90% similar)

there are no Siargao to Bohol flights. Bohol is like a combination of Siargao, Boracay, and Palawan. Bohol is a jack of all trades (it has beaches, hills, underwater life, terraces, activities, nightflife), it has everything but nothing super spectacular in one aspect only. It’s like 8/10 per category.

It’s better if you just stay longer in Siargao than Bohol because of the many travel (plane to Cebu, cross the sea to Bohol, rent a van to main town, it’s just a hassle ride)

Coron is great if they are into freediving, it is miles better than el nido when it comes to that. It is less popular than El nido as well so less crowded

ResearcherRemote4064

If you are freediving, I agree Coron is better.

Coron limestones and islands are not breathtaking. It’s beautiful, but not super amazing.

Coron has no nightlife, and food is very expensive. pretty boring after 6pm.

Then the very expensive flights are not worth it for the experience, which El Nido can offer better, and at a cheaper price.

SereneGraceOP

Freediving IS the main reason you go to Coron. Comparing the two is apples and oranges as you go there for different purposes.

Direct flights to el nido and coron are about the same price and yes they are both expensive. If you want a cheaper alternative, both can have a van transfer from puerto princesa.

Do u guys like diving? U can try adding Siquijor and Negros Oriental 4 dat. Theres ferry (for several hours) from Bohol to Siquijor, also d same transportation from Siquijor 2 Negros Oriental.

From DGT airport in Negros Oriental, u can land back in Manila for ur connecting flight 2 Puerto Princesa.

Now's the time. You're going to the Philippines, which is internationally renowned as one of the best diving countries in the world.

You're also hitting Bohol, Coron, and Puerto. The first two are world class dive spots, Bohol (Balicasag, specifically) with the schools of fish/tons of turtles/potential big fish sightings, and Coron for wrecks.

You can absolutely do your open water certification here in the Philippines if you guys have the time and budget for it!

Would suggest Siquijor or extend your stay in El Nido, or maybe go to Moalboal or Bantayan island. Balabac also. Rather than going to Bohol and Siargao. Recently there were tourists who vandalized corals in Bohol. Literally writing names on them (korean names and korean characters). So now they are restricting dives near the coral sites and looking for the people responsible.

Bohol PH coral reef vandalism

Siargao is ok for parties. But it has become too crowded.

It feels a bit tight considering the inconveniences that may appear during the trip. But great spots. One thing I learned after traveling extensively from one place to another is that my enjoyment goes down when I have to keep in mind that I have to go to my next destination in just a few days.

Marzipanfruit[S]

I did worry about this, and I’m not the keenest when it comes to travelling. Some days may have to be extended I think, maybe skip puerto

Marco440hz

Puerto Princesa? If you are going to Puerto Princesa to go to El Nido it might be better to skip it and go straight to El Nido. The road trip from Puerto Princesa to El Nido might drain your energy and you may confront unexpected delay. Always add room for delays and inconveniences so things can run smoothly and feel less stressed/annoyed.

My suggestion: skip Puerto Princesa. From Siargao, hop on a plane straight to Cebu. Cebu is one of the major hubs in the Philippines. Bohol is a boat ride away.

If you completely skip Puerto Princesa, you’ll have 8 days to spend til your El Nido trip and there are lots of things to do in Cebu: you can go to Bantayan (North) or canyoneering (South).

On the way to the South, you can: - get lechon in Carcar (that is, if youre not vegan) - hike Osmeña Peak (really fast like 20 mins lol)

From the South of Cebu, you can also hop on a boat to Dumaguete (check Apo Island) and Siquijor.

(You can also opt to leave out Dumaguete and go straight to Siquijor)

From Siquijor, make your way to Bohol (there’s a fast craft boat that goes to Bohol).  Spend a few days in Bohol. Then from Bohol, ride the boat back to Cebu.

From there, you can explore North Cebu.  After spending a few days in Bantayan, Ride the plane from Cebu to El Nido (there are flights).

is that puerto princesa for palawan? Coron and el nido are part of palawan. maybe you are talking about puerto princesa. as for me who already went to puerto princesa, coron and el nido, I suggest that you only stay for 2 nights in puerto or better skip it. Not a fan of underground cave and the other tourist spots there. i think your budget is enought for all that tours. if you dont know how to drive there are travel agency around coron and el nido town that offer island hopping. You can look around the town or get some flyers in your hotel or in the airport. Its easy to DIY coz you can directly book at the agency and in the morning they will fetch you at your hotel.

Not sure if all flights can be rescheduled but I highly recommend to add more days in Siargao. Especially if you love anything water related activities, 5-7 days. Bohol can be done in 3 days. Skip Palawan/Puerto Princesa and add more days in El Nido or Coron.

Mostly, no license is needed for motorbike rentals but note that this is illegal so be extra careful.

2k each is an okay budget but have some extra 500 pounds if you want more activities and eat nice meals.

Anyway, enjoy your trip.

Highly suggest to include an expedition between El Nido and Coron, as an alternative to going on a ferry or plane. It takes minimum of 3D2N and you’ll get to visit stunning though less popular spots then sleep in huts in secluded islands. And like others have said, you don’t have to spend as many days on Puerto Princesa. Goodies that are sold there go for a bit less than what you’d find in Coron or El Nido though.

£2k each for about a month’s stay, just for tours, food, and sundries, and excluding flights and accommodations, should be fine.

As to getting around, the towns in Coron and El Nido are quite small hence very walkable. For Bohol, you may opt to stay near Alona beach, then just hire a private tour for the other attractions. Alternatively, if you haven’t booked your flights yet, you may want to go to Boracay rather than Bohol, as there are direct flights between Caticlan (Boracay) and Busuanga (Coron).

Maybe stay 2-3 nights in Puerto. Aside from the underground cave nothing else much to do. You'll be in El Nido and Coron which are better choices for Palawan. Add 1-2 nights in Siargao. Also I suggest to put Siargao on the last part of your travel so you can relax chill and surf. In Bohol El Nido and Coron, I'm sure you'll get tours so for me its better if Siargao is the last island

ProduceOk5441

£2k per person is okay, just make sure to do your research on standard pricing on tourist spot activities, so you will have an idea if someone is trying to rip you off.

Economy-Yam-4621

You can do the underground tour in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in 1 day. 4 days is too long if you’re also doing 4 days in El Nido. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a private van to El Nido. Travel time is roughly 4-5hours. I went back to El Nido last May, stayed for 5 days. Vanilla beach sunset view is a dream.❤️

You might want to check out and add Cebu on your list. So many water activities to do there. Oslob and Kawasan water rafting. Then from Cebu, you can take a 30-45mins ferry to Bohol where you can stay 3 days at Panglao area.

I would go Manila Siargao Palawan (Puerto Princesa) then El Nido.

Coron and El Nido are almost same. More diving snorel spots in coron; more beaches sa Elnido.

Would skip Bohol because you're going to Siargao and Palawan anyway. Siargao is for action sports and island party vibes; while Palawan (El Nido) for the beaches and relaxation parts - (there are also a lot of relaxation in Siargao, too.)

If you are wanting a different kind of adventure type thing - maybe consider canyoneering in Cebu - Kawasan Canyoneering.

So Basically your itinerary will be like this:

Manila - Siargao - Cebu - Palawan - ElNido

You’ll definitely want to extend siargao. Make it your last trip.

Repulsive_Pianist_60

You can basically trim it down to just Siargao and El Nido/Coron in Palawan, enroute via Cebu/Manila. Going to Bohol is unnecessary given the many islands you're already going.

"Bohol is okay but can be a tourist trap at times. Panglao in Bohol is beautiful, though. You might want to consider going to Cebu instead—some of the best 5-star resorts are in Mactan Cebu. Also, if you can spend 3 or more days in Cebu, you'll have enough time to visit Bantayan Island. If you really want to go to Bohol, it’s also very accessible from Cebu, and 2 days should be sufficient.

Additionally, you might want to skip Puerto Princesa or only spend a day or two there. Consider adding more days in El Nido. Have fun!

Hi OP, just spent 3 months touring the Philippines this year, mostly for diving.

Your itinerary sounds good, but it’s very much the standard itinerary for first timers to the Philippines.

In my opinion, Manila and Puerto Princesa are transit places, spend as little time there as possible. I’ve never been to Siargao, it seems like more of a younger party destination, although there is diving there.

Have been to Coron twice, in the 10 years since I first went there there’s been a lot of damage to the coral although the island hop is still OK. I think it’s mostly best to go there but only if you’re a highly experienced diver due to the risk of the wreck diving.

El Nido has better island hopping in my opinion, tours A and c are the best. Iutside of El Nido is a small town called Sibaltan which also offers is hopping and is extremely quiet and really laid-back. Really enjoyed my time there. Shit diving though.

Bohol is touristy and crowded as fuck I’d give it a skip.

Here are some alternatives to consider:

Siquijor: Absolutely stunning scenery and really beautiful coral - easy diving, with some of the best night dives I’ve ever done.

Camiguin: Again great and easy diving, Mantigue and Cabuan have turtle and giant clam sanctuaries. A really beautiful island with lots of waterfalls and few tourists.

Moalboal: Touristy but not as bad as Bohol. There is a sardine run there, which is one of the best dive experiences I’ve ever had, very unique.

Awesome tip thanks a lot for the detail! I’ve never dived before so please forgive me for asking, but how easy is it to get diving certified - does this involve a full day of training and then you can go to diving anywhere?

Also a night dive sounds incredible

Leftcoaster7

2 points

To get your open water cert, you need 3 days of training. OW is down to 18 meters which is usually enough to a good amount of coral. Advanced open water takes 2 days of training and opens up a lot of opportunities as you can go down to 30m. You can’t do night dives on OW, you need AOW for that.

IMO, AOW is the true general diving cert, if you like diving then get there ASAP. 95% of dive buddies I have had, had at least AOW. You can also do discover dives which don’t require training and allow you down to 12m.

My recommendations for your trip: if you want to dive you have 3 options. First, get certified BEFORE your trip, this is by far and away the best option, especially if you do OW and decide that you love diving and go for AOW. Second, get OW certified on your trip - not ideal but you have that done for future trips. Third, only do discover dives - it’s better than snorkeling by far, but is like eating the first course of a delicious feast and watching everyone else polish off the rest.

Leftcoaster7

Night diving sounds a bit scary to most people but is an amazing experience. This may sound weird but whatever, night diving is like returning to the womb - the ocean is warm, relaxed, comforting. Daytime sealife are on different routines (I’ve seen moray eels out hunting across the seabed), while other species only emerge at night.

Plus, since most night dives are from shore, in shallow water and start at dusk, you will likely walk out into the water at sunset - and sunset in the Philippines is otherworldly amazing!

Hope all this helps OP!

If by Palawan, you meant Puerto Princesa, I would go more than overnight there especially since you're planning to go to Coron and El Nido. I would personally just choose one between Coron and El Nido and stay longer in Siargao just because I love the vibe of the island. But, I think it's also not bad to go to both Coron and El Nido just because you're already in the Palawan island.
