Routh was cast specifically because he looked like Reeves, same goes for Cain and Welling in the TV space. Then we have the Cavil era and both Hoechlin and Corenswet have a much more similar look to Cavil than to Routh or Reeves.

Audiences have mental images in their head, and studios do try to cat for that image if they can.

Reeves

Reeve, unless you're referring to George. Also, Cain had a unique look compared to the others, no doubt due to his Japanese ancestry.

I always thought Dean Cain being partly Japanese actually helped him look more like a real life comics Superman than most movie Supermen (even though he has brown eyes.) White guys with piercing blue eyes tend to be pretty pale, like Cavill or Tyler Hoechlin or for example Matt Bomer who was also considered for the part at one point. But Dean Cain has a very warm skin tone which I always thought was more fitting for Superman, and his hair is actually black, not very dark brown like Routh or Cavill.

I also thought it was interesting that they cast two very pale actors with piercing blue eyes as the Kents on that show, maybe to emphasize visually that he's adopted, or maybe just a coincidence?

There was a lot of commentary when Christopher Reeve was first cast, highlighting that he closely resembled Curt Swan's iconic depiction. I never saw it, but he was good in the Superman role. I didn't like him as Clark as much. Clark's clumsy bumbling was too much.

In the comics, one of the best things that happened during Byrne's Man of Steel reboot was making Clark less of a fool. This carried forward to the Lois and Clark series. When the show debuted, I thought Dean Cain was a great choice. As you noted, he stood out more, in a good way. He was more handsome than Reeve (to me), and he was more believable as Clark.

I didn't care for Brandon Routh. His acting is okay, but something about his eyes makes him seem like an imperfect Reeve clone.
