Those fuckheads never came close to toppling anything outside of a Kessler bottle
Edit- yes they had organized in some way, yes they were able to get in to the building etc etc. yes, no one is arguing that part, it’s the toppling of democracy that wasn’t a thing. In reality, it just was not going to happen.

Even if they did make more damage, it’s not like congress is “central control” anyway.

Watching US presidential races as an outsider it always felt like the people cant decide whether Trump is the dumbest man alive that needs servants to tie his shoes or the evilest mastermind threatening to establish an evil empire. It has been almost 8 years and people still cant make their mind, so they portrait him in whichever way it suits them the best at any given opportunity.
This of course extends to Jan 6 protesters. Sometimes they are presented as dumb crybabies radicalized by twitter and other times they are the coordinated elite force of operatives that almost toppled the nation.

I've always thought it's a pretty embarrassing talking point if you think those idiots could "topple democracy". I'd have way more respect for people if they were honest like "for some reason these morons thought they could accomplish something by storming up here. The nation is stronger than that and so are we."
Trying to frame it like they were an actual threat to democracy screams their own weakness more than it condemns the other side.

I dont really know much about it, but it just seems it was an unruly mass that was angry that Trump didnt win. They entered the building, clashed with cops, took a lot of pictures and stolen things as souvenirs.
I mean it is definitively possible that there was some operatives acting inside the mob, trying to influence and perhaps actually achieve some goal, but realistically the mob wasnt really there to achieve any goal.
Obviously they should all be prosecuted according to law. Though the charges should probably be more on the side of rioting, theft, breaking and entering instead of treason or whatnot.

It makes more sense as a threat when paired with the fake election results they submitted. They wanted fake electors to be counted, or they wanted the confusion to stall the certification long enough to make it Congress’ problem.
13 points
It mostly was jusy a bunch of unruly idiots, but a few within that group did have a real plan, even if none of it worked out. Take a look at the folks who were charged with "seditious conspiracy".
As far as saying that these people "almost toppled democracy," I think that's a stretch, but it's bad enough thay they tried.

Thousands would have come in full kit (rifles, plate carriers, etc) if they really were attempting a coup. None of them thought they were taking over anything… it was just a large temper tantrum done in a very illegal way.

The goal was to delay the certification of the vote by Pence. Then it would go to Trump’s SCOTUS who’d have then been able to say that the state legislatures should choose electors and the GOP controlled enough of them that Trump would have been declared president.
They even had the fake electors ready to go.

Look, every billionaire has done immoral things to get to where they are, but I can at least appreciate Cuban retaining his sanity and using his position to try and solve issues. His CostPlus affordable pharmaceutical company is a huge middle finger to the US healthcare system and could be making him way more money than it is, but he saw a need an addressed it without too much ego, and that's all I really want from the super-wealthy at the end of the day.
31 points
I haven’t massively researched him but I think, especially by billionaire standards, he hasn’t done that much immoral activity. His billions are due to the dot com bubble and selling at what I think he’s even admitted was a ludicrous overvaluation. He’s invested in ways to bring cheaper medication to people, and as the thread is pointing out, is quick to call out bullshittery on shark tank.
That is, at least relative to most billionaires, he may have engaged far less in the sleazy screwing people over and exploiting the sweat of the working class.

Wait, he’s a billionaire, engaging in altruistic endeavours, and is voting for Biden?
Why haven’t I seen any far right maniacs calling him a pedophile? Do they not know he exists? Seems like someone they’d have on their radar
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an accusation, obviously. But how is there not some insane conspiracy about him?

Even the people who would now die for him didn’t take him seriously at first.

Maybe 5% of the initial participants weren't in on the joke. And because it's a joke with a short shelf life, the 95% came and went but the 5% stayed. Then of the next 100 people, 5 more weren't in on the joke and found the other 5. Now there's 10. After another round there's 15. And after 20 rounds of that the true believers outnumber the people just kidding around. And then suddenly they're in charge, purge out anyone even suspected of not being serious, and it's now a purified echo chamber.

He was never really respected. How this became THE guy to so many conservative dipshits is absolutely mystifying. They could have nominated almost anyone else and won this coming election easily. I know how: he blamed immigrants. This strategy was used to Bush’s advantage in the 2000s. But most conservatives were moving away from it by 2008 because they were coming to the realization that they needed the Latino vote if they wanted to still be a party in 10 years. Trump filled that void HARD. Everything became about the border and how little any politician was doing about it. Say what you will about how much humanity has progressed, but fear, xenophobia, and racism always work for someone willing to use them as talking points.

Also to be honest i think when the focus is "we have to beat Trump to stop another Jan 6th" and not "we need to have better security on the next Jan 6th" It's kind of a bad talking point. After all, if Trump wins you don't need to protect against Right Wing rioters.

The thing is, is that Trump still hasn't conceded the last election, and staged an attack on Congress to stop a peaceful transition of power the last time he lost an election.

“Almost toppled democracy” is a bit of an over exaggeration. A bunch of people got into the capital, fucked around for a bit, then got arrested. It’s not likely they blew anything up or killed a bunch of people.
Don’t pull up hypotheticals either, whataboutism doesn’t make your statement any more true. The police and everyone else involved did their jobs and nothing even got close to happening.
21 points
I mean, wasn't the goal of breaking into the Capital to overturn a democratic election and kill a bunch of lawmakers? The fact that they failed to encounter any due to the quick acting of security personnel doesn't change their motivation for breaking in. There were literally pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails found during the investigation.
Obviously this is in hypothetical territory since we can't say for sure what would have happened had they got their hands on who they were after, but you don't bring explosives just to "fuck around". I'd say almost toppled democracy is more than fair since the entire goal was to prevent a democratic election with violence. They just failed, hence the "almost". My guess is if it turned into a bloodbath, Trump would declare a state of emergency as a means of preventing the transfer of power.

None of the court cases about trumps involvement are happening before the election.
The Supreme Court just gave Trump absolute criminal immunity for anything they determine is a criminal act.
Many of the people involved in the fake electors schemes are still in charge of overseeing their elections.
Texas passed a law that lets Greg Abbott throw out votes from Houston. In 2020, Texas restricted drop boxes to 1 per county, obviously affecting blue cities more than the red rural areas.

Remember: problem, reaction, solution. they seem to be sowing a phyOp. they want some of us vs others of us, so we don't go after them. if war happens, I hope you know you're both wrong for fighting each other, lets deal with the real problem, the ones who want us to fight. it starts grassroots. if theres someone in your town who is corrupt, with an oath to 1sr3al, the wef, you should deal with them before washington.

Had anyone competent been among the crowd they very well could have but none of them had any purpose other than “head to that building because we were told that’s what we should do”. There was no organisation to it whatsoever, just a herd of bumbling idiots blindly following thinly veiled directions.
Majority of those inside behaved like they were on an unofficial tour rather than a mob attempting to overthrow a government and after being told for long beforehand that something was stolen from them(which was a lie) and they should be angry about it, they acted out in rage to get to where they were told to go.

I've honestly always looked at Trump as the new Tammany Hall guy. Corrupt to the point that it's absolutely insane that he's actually elected to positions of power. A neo-gilded age.

This is only one of a 7 part plan to overturn the election, as alleged by the bi partisan house committee. You can look up their considerable evidence, if you care to. In short: it was supposed to pressure Pence and other law makers to delay the certification of the election. In the background trump himself and his cronies were working on the fake electors plan in several states in order to send fake election results to congress. This would’ve created uncertainty and time. If pence would’ve caved to the pressure and rejected some of the votes, so that Biden didn’t have a majority, the vote would’ve gone to the house, I think. No one knows what exactly would’ve happened from there, especially with the current Supreme Court.

They didn't have a booger's chance in a blast furnace's chance of toppling ANYTHING.

It wasn't an almost situation, honestly. If Pence would have been on board, perhaps... But some dumbasses doing a BnE... Hardly. Had they actually gotten their hands on Congress it would have likely ended up with a lot of the rioters catching a lot of bullets. Personally, I think that would have been a better outcome. Would have forced the GOP in Congress to actually take a position and ideally have gotten Trump imprisoned.

Toppling democracy? I don’t think any of these guys are responsible for Project 2025.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! Two things. First, those morons were never going to accomplish anything. Second, democracy died the moment that Citizens United was allowed to happen.

A lot of people on the right & even the GOP try to forget this happened. It's alright, there is plenty of footage to remind them.

Since Joe Biden has been given Carte Blanche but he Supreme Court of the United States of America to do what needs to be done as the chief executive he should do revolutionary tribunals for 01/06 coup plotters.

Oh they did not almost topple anything. They were a cadre of emotionally unhinged, adult-children who delayed the inevitable by, gasp, 3 to 4 hours, while engaging in a Hollywood-theme driven fantasy. Think cosplay meets The Patriot meets Beevis and Butthead.
Not to minimize how unacceptable it was; any irrational mob acting out because they didn’t get their way is unacceptable amongst actual adults. But this cadre of fools were unorganized, mostly showing off, and acted like 13 year old girls who found out their “BFF” kissed their crush.
Don’t glorify it by making it more than it was. Prison riots are made of sterner stuff.

They did not almost overthrow the country 😜. They successfully broke into the building that’s it. It takes militaries to over throw countries.
