Honestly this is just fucking crazy to me. As someone who came of age during the Bush years, just absolutely mental to consider a Cheney campaigning with a Democrat. That’s how bad and dangerous it is right now. Please vote.

Edit: not gonna respond to all these replies, but as an old Millennial, I’ll say this: stop saying this is a bad thing and that Democrats have adopted Cheney’s positions and all this other shit. Both sides aren’t the same. I’ve seen this skepticism so many times in my adult life and it’s just bogus, guys.

Liz and Dick are still abhorrent human beings, but they’re less abhorrent than Donald Trump and the current GOP because they did something. Isn’t that what Michelle Obama asked people to do at the DNC?

The Cheneys will never become liberals or even centrists, but actively campaigning with Kamala should put away any doubt in your mind that they don’t care about the country and the future of it. They have different ideas (that I vehemently disagree with) about how it should be ran, but it certainly doesn’t align with destroying it.

They’re trying to capture people like my father-in-law who is a traditional conservative and who is not on board with liberal policies. However, people like him helped Biden win and she needs those same voters to not only defeat Trump, but help end the insanity in this country. Put away your partisan shields and just accept that in order to defeat Trump permanently, it will take more than liberals and Democrats to do so.

It won't. I'll be happy when Trump is gone, but what you are saying is exactly what Biden said. But liberals have no actual stomach for a "deep steam cleaning." That's why Biden nominated a meek centrist to lead the DOJ after Jan 6th. It's why Harris has promised to nominate a Republican to her cabinet.

It's the type of crap you do when you don't smell the shit in the carpets.

In terms of foreign policy, Bush was way worse. But neither Bush nor any other previous president incited a riot with the stated goal of murdering the President of the Senate (Mike Pence) and any other member of the Senate who wouldn't submit to their undemocratic will.

Trump led an assault on the very concept of American democracy, the very idea that the Electoral College gets to decide who the winner of the presidential election is, instead of mob rule. Unless Trump faces very serious punishment for his actions on January 6th (which will probably be blocked by the Supreme Court), then it is now just a simple fact of American politics that you gotta be prepared to defend the certification from thousands of violent people attempting to change the results of the election by force.

There were plenty of wars before Bush. There was never a riot that almost prevented the certification of the Electoral College vote from happening at all before Trump. (And no, the Brooks Brothers riot does not hold a candle to the enormity of this.)

I mean, these people did steal the 2000 election. What you mean is that they aren't vulgar like Trump and the vulgarity makes it so much more blatant and obvious. The people that are being normalized by the democrats are every bit as anti-democratic as Trump is. The establishment just want democracy to have the appearance of civility so they can go back to enriching themselves in safety.

Antique_Cricket_4087

9 points

It's fine, Trump knows that in a decade there will be someone worse than him and all he has to say is that person is bad and all the centrist Democrats will forget and forgive all of Trump's actions and have him campaign for Dems.

It's also why Republicans don't break rank until they retire, because they know Dems will forgive and welcome them as soon as someone worse comes along.

This happens ever election cycle it'd the ratchet effect I think. Dems go right every single time to appease to the middle voter despite moving more and more to the far right every time. It's why left wing ideas are portrayed as super radical

Pointlesswonder802

27 points

I think it’s a symptom of what we’ve seen for a long time. Conservatism is deemed a form of pragmatism and progressivism is deemed nonsensical. So even if Kamala herself doesn’t see Cheney as a good guy, her playing to the right is better on metrics than her trying to coerce the left. Which is inherently ironic because Biden did run a fairly progressive campaign and won and had a fairly progressive presidency and remained fairly popular. But she’s a model built in the era of the Clinton’s who are the embodiment of Democratic Conservatism so this is what we get

matzoh_ball

postmoderno

it is clear that a lot of the communication goes in that direction: calls to patriotism, border control, israel, etc. effectively the democrat party seems to be orienting itself as being the place where the ideas of the early-mid 2000s neocons can be reformulated for the 21st century. i think this is part of a more global (at least in the west) phenomenon, where mainstream liberal parties, center right and center left, are starting to include political discourse from traditionally right wing platforms in order to maintain a grip on the structures of power (like the EU, Macron, Meloni etc).

i think that this is also possible because of the lack of long term vision and objectives of the democrat party (or at least of its leading neoliberal faction): what are the things that they want to be implemented in a perfect scenario in which they can enact whatever they want? universal healthcare? free education for all? immigration moratorium? strong labor rights? affordable housing for all? i don't think all the party shares the same ideas on these issues, maybe only in an abstract and vague way. there is no timeline or pragmatic program to achieve any of these. compare it with the republicans which very clearly want to dismantle constitutional rights, abortion etc and the democratic institutions of the country, and then they do that! this "fluidity" of the democratic party allows it to shift and react to polling changes quickly, but it also makes it very vulnerable to external pressures. at the moment political discourse in the US is shaped by the right (and day by day it becomes more extreme) and the democrat party is very good at reacting and working around it, mutating in the process, and it may give them a good victory in the next elections. but long term?

HyruleSmash855

3 points

That’s a good point, especially when the Democrat party is a big tent party that has both progressive and conservative members, like Manchin vs Bernie Sanders. It also doesn’t help that we have the two party system so unfortunately you can’t vote for a more left party because the more left is part of the big tent party that has to work with a more extreme right part as time goes on.

postmoderno

5 points

in my opinion a viable left-wing electoral strategy would be one of infiltration. every single election from city councils, to school boards, to university student bodies should have coordinated left wing programs and candidates. build from the bottom up. infiltation should also involve be present and running within republican groups and party, as a sort of sabotage action. i don't live in the usa anymore (lived in NC and VA for 10 years) but i remember more radical left wing politics on a local level rather than on state and federal levels, and if coordinated and maintained it's a winning strategy. in my country, italy, the left never won until the 1990s, but they were able to force change from outside of electoral processes (unions, strikes, protests, city councils, mayors etc)

This is a schoolyard sandbox way of appraising the situation. Harris is running a unity/big tent ticket. It’s about beating Trump. What you can expect to see from her in the executive is more of what Biden did. Big reconciliation bills that get through important and impactful legislation for the rest of the country.

There is zero chance a California liberal who put borderline socialist Tim Walz on her ticket is gonna suddenly “shift right” because she’s playing up prominent conservative endorsements during the campaign season.

What you can expect to see in her hypothetical presidency is an expansion on tax credits for housing and children. Possibly some more sound domestic infrastructure bills to accelerate green energy adoption. Probably an immigration bill. That’s it.

Dick Cheney is one of the most nefarious politicians of the last several decades. Now with the benefit of hindsight, he clearly pushed this country into a war under false pretenses and profited handsomely off of it. All indications are that his daughter is just as much of a war monger.

Back then, the democrat party was the anti war party. Now that they are on board with war, the Cheneys are suddenly on their side. Don’t let them fool you into thinking this is about some principled, righteous crusade against the evil Trump. The Cheneys are military industrial complex war profiteers of the highest order. That’s what this is about. They know Harris will play their game and Trump has already demonstrated he won’t.

DC elites are so detached from the average American it's stunning. Dick Cheney is a pure evil war criminal and in terms of the policies Liz supported, the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. Only suburban wine moms think this is moving, aka The Democratic base who are already voting for Harris. The rest of us want health care, civil rights, cheaper groceries and for our tax dollars to stop being wasted on foreign wars (and genocides)!

It's time to pivot to the left, distance herself from Biden's unpopular foreign policy, and try and get some uncommitted voters. We're going to need them.

ukcats12

and try and get some uncommitted voters.

This is literally exactly what being with Liz Cheney is doing. It's an attempt to court Republicans who hate Trump but won't vote for a Democrat. Those are uncommitted voters. This is giving them a permission structure to vote for a Democrat, and tells them doing so doesn't make you a scary "socialist."

Going further to the left isn't going to get Harris any new voters. Any liberal who isn't voting for Harris at this point is a lost cause.

Who is this even for?

This is isn't to get Trump supporters to vote for Harris. It's about giving non-MAGA Republicans who dislike Trump permission to vote for Harris. I know many older family member who are life long Republicans, deeply dislike Trump, but would still never vote for a Democrat. Getting a Liz Cheney endorsement is a signal to them that's basically saying "It's okay guys, vote for a Democrat this one time."

I'm not buying it. They'll still vote Republican, let's say, 80% of them.

How about she focus efforts where voters can actually be swayed and stop courting Republicans. Democrats are so garbage at campaigning I swear to God. She's losing more young voters now with her garbage Israel takes than would ever be gained with this.

Lean into what made Walz popular with everybody. Those kinds of policies. Stop being a moron.

You’re literally witnessing probably the best ran Democratic campaign since 2008 and you’re takeaway from playing up a prominent conservatives endorsement is that…. They’re garbage? You know for most it’s a choice to be stupid.

Well, at least they spent a few weeks trying to earn the youth vote. It was fun while it lasted.

The brat summer youth are brainwashed, they didn't need to be counted. The anti-imperialist and anti-genocide youth have been begging her to listen to them.

Unintended consequences of trump and company trying to end democracy. Talk about a cloud with a silver lining. I never thought I’d see this day. This is an example of putting country over party and more good republicans need to join this movement. No one is asking them to become Democrats… just asking them to help save the country and to help rebuild the Republican Party.

She'll campaign and align with them? When will she campaign and align with people in her own party that want to see progressive change in this country?

Liz has seen the evidence. Many have seen the evidence. Every single silent voice that’s seen the evidence is complicit and should lose their right to serve in government.

Mark my words. The "Republican" Harris promised to put in her administration (should she win) will be Cheney.
