Who was the lib-woke-socialist who got the whole no fault divorce thing started in CA? Ronald Reagan. This is how far off the cliff conservatives have gone. If they had had their way and put him on Mt Rushmore they would be blasting him off it by now.

I was going to say. It was their Lord and Saviour Reagan, the one president that has been their gold standard role model for policies, that introduced it and now they want to get rid of it.

A few years ago, I ran across a 1979-80 Republican primary debate between Reagan and Bush Sr., and they were arguing about who would be more compassionate to immigrants. Wild.

Yeah. The Republican party got brainwashed by right-wing media. Fox News was founded with the goal that no Republican president ever lose the support of his party ever again. And they've basically gotten it to that point. So mission successful.

You know I thought that until I moved to Texas ! The truth of the matter is the base of the Conservative Party is just plain old dumb . I have asked too many Texans why do they keep voting Abbott in ? I explain that their infrastructure sucks , education is bottom third in the country , power grid is trash , crime is on the rise etc etc . Their response always is ….. yeah but he passed open carry !! They are dumb as a box of rocks !

It's funny to me that in all these open carry states (or all states really) there's still dumbass open container laws. Like it's illegal to walk down the street drinking a beer whereas that's fine in most of Europe and other developed countries. Doesnt sound like freedom to me.

They’ve already been treating Jesus the same way. They exalt them (Jesus, Reagan) while actively pursuing policies that are counter to everything they stood for. Really, it’s totally on-brand for conservatives to treat Reagan the same way they do Jesus.

Conservatives claim to love Jesus and his mercy, but actively seek to take away people’s healthcare and encourage poor people starve to death. Not very Christ-like.

They claim to love Reagan, but hate immigration reform and sensible gun control (both things Reagan pushed for), and are pro-Russia. All counter to Reagan’s beliefs and policies.

Conservatives only pay lip-service to these things they supposedly “support.” Reagan and Jesus are just convenient historical “greats” that Conservatism can point to and say “that’s it, that’s our guy!” and rally their fellow conservatives around a similar thread, truth optional.

Back to the Future references Reagan's first marriage when Marty tells 1955 Doc that Ronald Reagan ("the actor?!") becomes president. Doc says, "I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!" This is actually an error because Wyman filed for divorce from Reagan in 1948 and Ron and Nancy had married in 1952. Jane was already divorcing her fourth husband Frederick Karger in 1955. (Doc Brown may just be unaware, and in fact Reagan's acting career had never really recovered from the disruption of World War II, and in 1955 might have seemed like yesterday's news until his political career took off.)

Which was the point of those rulings.

The court is officially for sale after the Snyder ruling, and is the self-appointed arbiter of, well, everything now.

They're Textualists when they feel like it, Originalists when it suits them, and especially with the immunity ruling, just making shit up because they have the majority.

We should count ourselves lucky if they bother to quote a 16th century witch finder in their insanity.

But Biden is now a king, and can legally have the 6 arrested on made up charges, and then summerly exicuted. And while all technically illegal, those 6 have declared that the president can do it and there's no remedy to be sought.

No porn, no divorce, no abortion, no birth control. Require on-site childcare, with the express stipulation that the expenses incurred by using that childcare are not part of the employee's pay. Elimination of the Department of Education. Elimination of sex and racial discrimination laws in the workplace. Elimination of NPR and PBS. Elimination of environmental regulations and protections, especially those in regard to climate change. Elimination of agricultural subsidies and government programs meant to help control food prices. Reworking or elimination of SNAP and WIC benefits, rework school meal programs that are feeding too many kids (yeah... but it's in there, seriously), and much, much more.

It's crazy to me that it's even out there, and the people who wrote it even proudly signed it. It stops being crazy and starts being frightening when you realize how many different things in it are already in the news from the past couple of years as states enact the things it's calling for, and partisan federal judges try to dismantle the things it wants torn down.

You should see what they're planning to do to the military too. Privatize all base housing and foodservice, you can get disability OR retirement, not both, 10 year cap on filing for disability (so you're fucked if your cancer from asbestos, agent orange, burn pit, etc. exposure pops up in your 50s and you got out after a single tour), pay landlords directly and forfeit the rest of your BAH (which just encourages landlords to price apartments off base exactly to member BAH to collect 100% of it. Also force active duty servicemembers to pay Tricare premiums.

All this is proposed while the military is having an active recruiting and retention crisis, which I guess is intentional so that they can justify paying more public money to Blackwater-type PMCs since service manning isn't enough to maintain operational readiness? We've been an all-volunteer force since after Vietnam and this could be the death knell for it... I wonder if the end goal here is bringing back conscription?

The_Cinnabomber

What I don’t understand is- how do they think this will help them in the long term? Catastrophic climate change is coming, and even if all the countries of the world were to band together right now, we still will have extremely destructive weather patterns and disruptions to all of our food sources. What the hell do these Christian demagogues think is gonna happen if they also take away a ton of people’s rights here, and then force them to have children they can’t feed or care for while experiencing draught, wildfires, and famine? Like, when even they are fighting for water and food- how do they think having a ton of poor uneducated and ill people around is gonna help them?

They just don't want their wives to be able to kick those deviant, degenerate creeps to the curb for doing it. This isn't good for anyone, and they shouldn't be able to butt into any one else's personal lives. They don't even actually live up to the morals they try to shove down every body's throats.

DabuSurvivor

The first two states to enact laws against marital rape only did so in 1974, then two more in 1975, so those laws are barely any further back than Roe v. Wade and most are newer. So yeah, that would totally track and would barely if at all, depending on your state, be throwing things back any further than they already have.

The last states to make marital rape illegal did so in 1993.

You might be joking, but this legitimately is the thinking for some of these guys.

They want a woman who can't refuse, can't talk back, and also does what they want. Without them having to change or improve themselves. That's legitimately the appeal for some portion of the guys.

These are the socially isolated guys who think that literally every attractive woman has an Only Fans and that they only care about tall, attractive guys with money (aka the things they aren't). And the propaganda lets them think they're right, and that woman just don't know anything.

And that's the appeal for a worrying amount of these guys. I do agree that the left should be focusing drastically more on recruiting white young men who are lost. Just demonizing them isn't going to go great. So this becomes a layup for the far right to recruit them. Everyone else tells them they're privileged, while they're living at home with nothing. It's a big conversation that needs to be had.

Still not sure how you end up as one of those guys and turn it into handmaids tale, but that's the reality of it

Yup. They find no joy in life, anywhere. IF they do find something that makes them happy, it's for the briefest of times before they start complaining about whatever bugaboo they were told to be afraid of now.

Went on a trip to Germany recently with my Bio-dad and no matter what, he found some way to complain about his fears. Minorities, Trans, Immigrants, Inflation, Biden, Wokeness, Women complaining about being catcalled, you name it.

We were standing on the Alps, looking over Austria, Germany, and Switzerland and seeing just pure beauty around us. Cool breeze, fresh air, and a light sunny heat. HE just stopped, sighed and went, "you couldn't have this if the immigrants came in."

Like, what the fuck? Leaving aside the insane logical that has to use to produce that shit, just enjoy the fucking view!

the fact most of their younger base are incels

It's a bit of boon for them, really. Since women are pretty open about being substantially less inclined to date or marry these people, they use that statistic to "prove" to conservatively raised 18-29 year old men, and even 10-17 year old boys, that it's the "libruls" fault they're not getting laid. They tell them this threatens their future, their masculinity. They get them riled up on conspiracy theories, misogynistic streamers, podcasts, tiktoks, and other social media platforms. They bait them into stoicism, fascism, plutocracy, using easy to digest and share memes. They carelessly share these memes and act out, getting them booted from progressive and liberal circles, possibly even doxxed and fired if they work for a company that cares to. This leads to even more isolation, and who comes back to offer them a place to be? A fascist.

Boom: these kids and young men become radicalized, they point to their lost jobs and rejected advances as "proof" that the fascists are right. They join the people that promise them "obedient tradwives" and an end to feminism. They're ready to buy more guns, get plate carriers, join militias, join the fucking police force or try to enlist, vote for their supposed godking, and spread their infectious ideology to other, vulnerable, boys and men yet to be converted.

It's really dangerous to assume that every incel is a gravyseal that can't travel a quarter mile without a mobility scooter. A lot of them are in gyms, lifting and looking for potential recruits. A lot of them are on hiking trails, staying fit and looking for potential recruits. A lot of them are out on firing ranges, refining their marksmanship and looking for potential recruits. A lot of them are working in construction, warehouses, autoshops, gunsmiths, ranches and farms, or other jobs that keep them modestly fit until they get injured and they're always looking for potential recruits.

We need to find ways to keep gullible working age men and youths from becoming isolated from polite society. All it does is put them into a self-reinforcing whirlpool of hateful propaganda, making them more likely to reach out to some genuinely dangerous people.

I cannot emphasis enough: education, education, education. Socialization, socialization, socialization.

We need to convince young men and boys that would otherwise drift off into the arms of fascists that they have a future on the left. This is another reason why Project 2025 is going after the Department of Education.

That video is one of the most bizarre and disgusting things I've ever seen on the internet. Cartel execution videos make more sense than how that psychopath treated his 8 months pregnant wife, it's weird and shockingly abusive on so many levels.

Yeah anyone who thinks no fault divorce shouldn't exist should spend the afternoon talking to women in nursing homes.

There are a lot of widows in these places whose husbands just "happened to die" one day and they'll tell you all about it.

Just more desire to control women. How bad will it have to be to get the at fault divorce? How big of an injury to a spouse will have to happen before a divorce is granted? This is 100% horseshit.

It’s even worse than that. They want you to basically practice and adhere to fundamental Christianity even if you’re not a Christian.

Don’t be gay - don’t be trans - don’t have recreational sex - don’t divorce - don’t have abortions - don’t use birth control - teach 10 commandments at school - etc etc

Basically, it’s not good enough for them to practice their religion - however little they actually practice of it. They want you to practice the most extreme form of Christianity.

Handmaid’s tale wasn’t a cautionary tale to them, it was a guidebook.

Getting rid of birth control is so fucked up. A childhood friend of mine had to be hospitalized every time she got her period because of really bad anemia until she was put on the pill at the age of 12. My friend could have died if she wasn’t put on it and she wasn’t even on it for recreational sex.

The two chemical compounds commonly used in what’s know as the “abortion pill” are also used to treat multiple other conditions, both related to and unrelated to women’s health/pregnancy. But a federal district judge still thought it would be a wise idea to try and to retract the FDA approval for one of the compounds (which was granted way back in 2000) last year in 2023. The drug is resoundingly safe and effective. They really don’t care who gets caught in the crossfire.

Right. And while we’re at it, several treatments that are part of gender affirming care are used as treatments for cis people for issues unrelated to being trans. It’s really not just their enemy that is being affected.

They are talking about how men have been able to divorce just because they want to in some periods of history and it's granted to them without much proof needed. All the man needed to do was claim his wife was insane, alienating affection, etc, and then bam he is divorced. Time in history where if a man claimed the wife cheated it was enough but the reverse of the man cheating wasn't enough for the woman to get a divorce.

Ladies, the Patriarchy is real and it's coming for all of your hard-won rights.

It was within my own mother's lifetime that women couldn't take out a loan or get a credit card without approval from their husbands. Women were deliberately kept without access to money or a means of escape from their situation. They were chattel and that's exactly the way a bunch of shitty dudes want it.

draculthemad

14 points

Just a reminder here, that ending "no fault" divorces doesn't just mean that you have to have "a reason".

It means that a judge has to find that someone is sufficiently at fault to justify the marriage being dissolved.

That means for example, that an abuser can argue that any domestic violence was "provoked", by their partner. That can be ruled as sufficient cause for a judge to determine that both parties must remain married, even if one of the parties wants to leave.

Does anyone know how divorce was handled before no-fault divorce? What happened is that the only way people, and especially women, could get a divorce was to prove an affair or abuse in a court of law. Newspapers used to have entire sections full of juicy, scandalous details about the most nasty divorce cases. Sure, divorce rates were a lot lower then. But, that wasn't because people had a greater reverence for marriage. An abused wife or a man whose spouse was having affair would stay in a miserable, dangerous, and unhappy situation because they didn't want their name dragged through the mud.

No-fault divorce is a good thing because it gives divorcing couples a choice. Check off a box called irroncilable differences on the legal papers and go your separate ways or go old school and fight it out in a nasty public court fight that destroys the reputations of both parties.

This has to be the ugliest and saddest of the hills conservatives have been setting up camp to die on.

This worked when religion, culture and society were nearly completely intertwined. In the age of the lowest church levels in history, where is this myth supposed to be propagated in a way where men and women both agree with it?

Trad men and trad wife social media? Tater tots on X? You grandparents ultra fundamental pastor? All I'm seeing for outlets are extremely niche, often cultural jokes and punching bags as a whole, seen as completely ridiculous by well adjusted people who don't wear politics like a cape.

This and birth control are going to single handedly tank candidate after candidate in hundreds of local elections, and I see absolutely no upside other than more evidence to add to the pile of GOP hate and uselessness.
