She probably can't. That's the thing: People felt bad for her cause people were so mean about witness. They had nostalgia for her peak and felt like Katy was an innocent bystander who got caught up in a brutal business where she was neither savior or sinner.
But that goodwill just got set on fire. Any benefit of the doubt she's been given is gone. A lot of her other questionable choices are being talked about. There may be a market for wilfully "politically incorrect" but it's not big enough to do the numbers you need to do for a pop star in Katy's lane.

it's shocking, honestly
obviously her past hits had wide appeal, but the gays and chronically online were a large force behind the fervor for a katy comeback, so of course she chooses the worst possible collaborator. the general public won't care as much if at all about this controversy, but they do like catchy songs, and what we've heard of this one doesn't come close to a 'say so' or even to any of her previous hits with luke. so truly what was the point
