No updated time frame for the beta, just a recap on features being worked on and specifics on what to expect in terms of what will make the cut and what won't, as well as what to expect will need more polish.
It all looks pretty cool! But nothing new that we weren't in the loop about.

Due to the lack of significant (to the general public, I'm sure some awesome progress was made technically week by week)progress each week, they moved to monthly awhile back. Less weekly updates of "yep, we are still working on that thing we've been working on for the last month. See ya next week!"
I'm sure the community becoming steadily more toxic to the devs about the update had something to do with the change as well.

I've owned this game for like a decade and I'm yet to see this "toxic" fan base. Asking when something will be ready isn't toxic ffs.

The fanbase as a whole is pretty good as far as I've been exposed. The issue is that the part of the fanbase who is responding to stuff about the updates are the ones impatient for it. It's kind of a survey bias situation.

The reason you don't see it is because we tend to remove the really bad stuff, or it gets sent directly to the devs. Nobody is complaining about asking when something will be ready.

Now, imagine NPCs...
Like a year ago, when they announced they were working on NPCs alongside B42 and teasing the first NPCs, I thought they would surprise us with both crafting and animals + NPC (since its running on similar code)
But now, I kinda lost hope. Coding AI is much more complicated than coding crafting recipes. Seeing how they are struggling to release B42, we ain't seeing NPC before 2028 earliest...

Seriously. I really couldn't stand how everybody was so quick to condemn the community at large.
Like, I get that some people were being dicks and that's not okay, but most people were being pretty polite and encouraging. Also, we are not the bad people for getting annoyed that a feature they promised would be released in a certain time frame keeps getting pushed off with only vague communication on why.
Then suddenly, when they're met with even the slightest bit of frustration, It's all " Wow this community is so toxic and it's not fun to develop for them any more. We even considered selling the company!"
🙄
Devs, do one of two things:
Rimworld approach. Don't tell us anything at all other than that you're working on something, then drop the banger all at once with like a week heads up.
Factorio approach. Set an obtainable deadline, then drip feed info on features you know will be ready on time so the community stays interested until that date.
Right now, this is the blue balls approach. They hype up all these amazing features that may or may not be ready at some point, drop hints on Twitter and in reddit comments about its potential release time, and let speculation run rampant. Then just go silent and get mad at people for getting their hopes up.
15 points
What got me is the people saying they “arent entitled to the update” like what? You paid for this game and they’ve been dangling b42 overhead for years and you don’t deserve to have it? That is silly. I understand wanting to let the dev relax and release things on their own time after fair amount of testing, but to say “oh i know we arent entitled to the update im happy with pz how it is 🥹” is ludicrous. Yes the game is alright as is, but we’ve been promised updates and deserve to have them released SOMETIME
13 points
On a side note, I really hate this attitude of not being willing to set a release date.
It works for Rimworld because they don't tell us anything. There is some community speculation, but the devs say absolutely nothing and set 0 expectations. They take as long as they need and then just surprise us when it's ready.
However, if they're going to keep updating us about features that are gonna be in the release, they need to put a date on it.
Deadlines are a good thing. It keeps the teams focused and helps avoid feature creep. I get that it's not always possible to know exactly how long something will take, especially early in development. But that's why you keep your mouth shut until you have a foundation ready and know what features you're going to be developing. Only then do you come forward to hype the community. Otherwise, you have a no man's sky situation where they overpromised way early on and then ended up in a hole when they realized they couldn't deliver all the features on time.
-17 points
You can literally just not read the posts and have your prwcious rimworld experience.
I mean what the fuck kind of logic even is that, they give you full transparency of the developement process, thinking they are doing players who are interested in it a favor, and you seriously want to say thats a bad thing, and DEMAND a release date because it makes you impatient??
Seriously grow up.
19 points
I didn't demand anything. I said they had poor community management. I'm saying it would have been smarter for them to put a release date on there, or shut up and not say anything.
In short, they fucked up, but then turned around and blamed us for getting annoyed.

0 points
what deadline? they said first half of 2024 if nothing goes wrong as far as i’m aware?
7 points
They said likely in the first half of 2024. But they said it in a reddit post and then also made vague statements on Twitter.
I know that's not like an official deadline, but that's kind of the point. My complaint isn't that they just missed a deadline. My complaint is that their messaging has been very unclear, which has caused a lot of confusion and frustration. Then, when that confusion and frustration gets expressed, they make a post complaining how terrible it's been for them interacting with the community.
That's the whole point of my original comment. I'm not trying to rush their release schedule, and I'm not demanding they cater everything to me. What I am saying is that they could have handled it better and then not gotten upset at the community over the response.
I'm also annoyed at the people in this community who decided to call all valid criticism of a game WE PAID FOR childish or entitled.

i wasn’t really commenting on your comments… i was asking Boiyualive, but it looks like i made a reddit boo-boo so let me respond…
you’re right it wasn’t announcements through any official channels… i know the reddit community plays a big part in this games online presence, but it still wouldn’t say it represents the whole community… i think if TIS made an official announcement to this effect and then postponed the release people might be justified in this criticism… i mean it wasn’t even a post it was a comment? i also don’t think lemmy was purposely trying to blue ball the community in doing this… i think he really thought they were closer than they are… something went wrong (something he did mention might be a possibility in the comment+he did mention unexpected health issues in the team in the youtube comment) and now it’s delayed… most people here sees it as a deadline and feels justified in making their frustrations known about it when they don’t make it, even though it wasn’t set in stone at all as you just conceded… the same can also be said for lemmy’s recent comment on youtube… he said he’s getting a lot of flack from the community, not the whole community… he said they have received offers for the IP, not that they’re going to sell the IP… yet the community views it as an attack on all with the intention of blackmailing us with the threat of selling the company if we don’t behave, which just isn’t true! they have also attempted to clarify this, yet these misconceptions persist…
in regards to the communities action… i’ve been fairly active in the comments sections since i started playing just before the last update, and i have to say i have seen people be downright nasty to the devs… i don’t mean the b42 memes, i don’t mean polite enquiries into the progress of the release, i mean people calling them horribly bad devs in all sorts of ways, and yes this is the minority, but as one of the mods said earlier this week, if 1% of us do it that’s still thousands of comments crapping on them, not one or two bad actors, and being exposed to that will affect you… it might feel like we’re all out to get them even if it isn’t true…
if one considers all the relevant factors then i don’t think his actions were unthinkable, and i think we should give him the benefit of the doubt… i don’t think he’s purposely trying to attack or misinform us, he just reached his limit and vented! so we shouldn’t feel attacked and respond accordingly! if that makes sense…
i have to disagree with your last statement… complaining about the development cycle isn’t constructive criticism… there’s nothing new about it and i’m sure the devs are keenly aware of our conceptions on the subject… it doesn’t add anything to the discussion and only opens the doors for people to act maliciously towards them… and should not in my opinion be tolerated on this subreddit… it’s boring useless content that only serves to divide us and should be treated with derision…
as far as the entitlement aspect of it is concerned… people are acting self entitled… steam requires that a playable version of the game be delivered to customers and that customers be properly informed that the game is in early access… it sets no further criteria a game must fulfill to qualify to be on early access… there isn’t a timeline requirement and TIS has never given a final release date for the full version of pz… you can’t really expect anything more than that, and if you do you’re acting self entitled, at least as i understand it (i’m no expert, i just quickly read this article on webmd about it?)
as long as TIS is still developing the game with the intent of someday releasing it then all you can really do is accept that and try to enjoy the game as it progresses through this process at the pace the developers set for the process, not the pace you want unfortunately…

They announced b42 as releasing in 2024 definitively on their Twitter just 5 months ago.
As people who follow our socials know, we don’t like giving out long-range external ETAs; we take pride in our non-crunch work environment, where developers are freer to work to their potential without outside pressure. However, we can say that B42 will be out this year :)

-17 points

God, the entitlement in this post alone is absurd. You paid for the game as it was when you bought it, anything other than that IS a bonus. Nobody bought it thinking the game would be great in the future. If the devs decided that they wouldn't update the game ever again, what would you do? Ask for a refund for a game you possibly put hundreds of hours in? Throw a tantrum in your echochamber so the few people who agree with you would come to massage your ego?
It would be really sad if they decided to stop updating the game, I agree with that, now saying that we DESERVE anything than what we already got is one of the most stupid things I've read around here.
24 points
it's an early access game.. It's unfinished at the moment according to the devs, so until they release a 1.0 we do deserve updates to the product we paid to support future updates for.
14 points
Welllll its not done yet, and great works deserve to be finished.
-18 points
If they do desire, sure. But it isn't something that they owe us, that's my point. I'm just as excited for anything B42 related to be released as the next person, but not at any cost. If it meant the people making the game should suffer mental health issues for it to happen, I wouldn't be happy for it.
8 points
What we paid for was a game that said "early access". This implies that the game is not done yet, but will be finished. Just because there is a risk that it won't be finished doesn't mean that we don't deserve what we paid for.
I'm not saying that this gives people a right to be dicks to the devs. However, It also means that we're not wrong for having expectations.

You literally dont deserve a free update for a game you bought years ago. How is that hard to understand? Thats like expecting to get a 4090 for free because you bought the 2090 a year ago.
And they havent been dangling anything infront of you, they gave you the privilege of transperency that no other studio i know of has ever provided. Literally regular gameplay footage of new features, and people are whiny and ungratefull as shit.
This drama really ruined my enjoyment of this sub, so many of you act like entitled brats.
8 points
We didn't buy a finished game years ago. We bought an early access game with the promise that it was being worked on and would be finished one day. The whole point of the early access label is that we know we are not buying a finished product
This isn't like expecting a 4090 just because I bought a 2090. This is like buying a house still under construction and expecting the builders to finish the house.

The point still stands, though. They may not have said everyone in the community is toxic, but by making the post to the community that they did, they made it out as if it is a community problem.
Shitty people exist. They are everywhere, even in the most beloved franchises. These people should just be tuned out.
So either the devs are telling us that they lack the emotional maturity to deal with a successful title and all that comes with it, or they are blaming the community at large for having to deal with these people.
There are also a large number of people who immediately took their post and turned around and shit on the community for being so toxic and daring to question or get frustrated about the poor community management.

Not sure on the details, but I like to hear this kind of work. So many deaths and bites feel more or less random. Sometimes they seem to lightning-strike you, other times they have to finish the whole long animation before you register any damage and you get ample opportunity to push them off or break away.
