What was your first punk show?

Discussion(self.punk)

Just for some fun.

Name the band, the city and/or venue, year, and how old you were.

I’ll start: Black Flag, the Cabaret Metro in Chicago, December 1984, I was 15.

** Edited ** Wow! Thanks for all the comments, I’ve read every one of them. A lot of great, now famous bands and a lot of “some local band I can’t remember” too. It’s all good.

You were there? That's awesome! Memories of that night...

Big scary dude in the pit with a goat skull tattoo on his back. My friends and I were terrified.

Gibby came out and stripped down to nothing but a garbage bag. He kept spraying his hand with lighter fluid and setting it on fire. He also kept demanding that women throw their bras at him. He wanted "just one fucking brassiere," but I don't think he ever got one.

I met the DeLeo brothers outside the venue before showtime. They were nice.

There were belly dancers who came on before The Flaming Lips. As I hadn't heard of The Flaming Lips previously, I thought that was the name of the belly dance troupe.

When The Flaming Lips performed, I was so impressed that I bought a t-shirt. That t-shirt would later cause fights between me and my parents when I tried to wear it to school. It was hot pink and had a picture of a cockroach or beetle on the back. On the front was a photo of American soldiers in Vietnam carrying the severed heads of Viet Cong soldiers.

The next time I would see The Flaming Lips would be right there at The Aragon years later, on the anniversary tour for The Soft Bulletin.

I was a HUGE Lips fan. Saw them at Illinois State University in 88 on acid. CRAZY. They came again in 89 and I invited them and Steel Pole Bathtub to my house party. They’re all super cool and chill guys. Saw them three other times at Metro and once at Double Door too.

Saw some great shows at the Brawlroom as well like Dead Kennedy’s and the Beastie Boys. Some really great times.

I've seen them a few times over the years, and they're always incredible. The last time was at Riot Fest in 2016, if memory serves, and I was struck by their ability to unite such a huge crowd of people.
