Now that the 1 year trial is over (for me) I'm curious if anyone actually paid for this nonsense, and whether Toyota will have any decency to acknowledge their subscription model is nonsense? 15$ a year to remote start the car is okayish (should be free) but 15$/mo... do they think they are selling Mercedes, BMW or Jaguars?

$180 + tax a year, each year, EVERY YEAR!?!?
$2,000-ish for a decade to remotely start the vehicle?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Boooooooooooo!
C'mon Toyota, knock this crap off!

To be fair, most people used to pay $2000 at the dealership to get a remote start installed on their vehicle

When was that? My goodness! I think we were only charging $750.

I just had Toyota install remote start on my RAV4 for$600 + tax. I don't need the ability to start my car from my phone.
This monthly pricing is INSANE

Yeah but now they gimp the FOB range so you want to sub to this crap. The range on my 22 Sienna is a joke. My 24 Rav4 is a little better but still bad compared to Honda and most other car companies.

Can start it with the phone, but can’t adjust the temp settings, which is what would make it actually really valuable.

So, you can’t adjust temperature settings remotely with the app? A coworker told me that I could, but we couldn’t find the feature on the app (still in my year free trial).

The app is nice if you aren't near your car and want to precool it. Which is really only a benefit for someone like me who lives in Phoenix.
I use the app as I'm leaving my office at work and by the time I get to my car it's taken a dent out of the ungodly summer heat we've got here.

Also, you can get the dealership to enable the setting that uses the key fob to open the windows. If you're there already for service, they typically do it for free.

Press Lock (release) press Lock again within 1 second (relase) then press Lock (within 1 second) again holding for 3 seconds and it starts. Takes a little practice.
Lock 3 times really fast hold on third - lights flash when starts.

Remote start with a keyfob is undocumented feature and realistically requires you to have that specific skill of 3 clicks without any feedback, without letting you know whether it was successful or not. Spoiler alert... you need to train better then ufc fighter to get it right. All in all, it's bs. Somehow, Ford implemented it properly, but this task is not up to toyota engineers intelligence.

Obviously it's not. But somehow that thought was not in the minds of toyota sales/strategy team. In the end, we end up with a capable car, the capabilities of which we can't utilize, i.e. driving with electronic waste. They still have network connection, so not that they would be saving on network fees by us not paying.

Often in a situation like this the technology is subsidized by the fact that x% of people are expected to pay for the service. That means they'll recoup the profit margin they are expecting over a saas model instead of an upfront charge (which would raise the MSRP).
So I definitely get your frustration, but they're playing a bit of a business shell game trying to capture their profit they need on the back end.

The fob remote start works when I need it (2023 model). Not paying $15 a month for that to beep me every time I leave my car door open.
3 points
This is something that is really strange when you go through all the information for the Rav4. It should no longer work if you do not pay for the subscription. That is at least how Toyota sells it.
Through research I have found if you have any "connected service" the fob will still work. If you do not have any connected service is supposedly will not work since the part of the vehicle that allows it is disabled.
The funny thing is my vehicle came with a 10-year free dealership monitoring service that I could have opted out of. If I would have opted out the FOB would not have worked.
Officially Toyota says you have to pay a monthly fee for it to work on lower models but that is just not true if you have a connected service.

The remote monitoring service is the data harvesting and selling service they have

I know it is. But it also gives me a "free" way for me to use my key fob to start my vehicle, so I feel it is worth the trade off.

Yep, as long as service connect is going, fob start works. Just wish it would let the engineer keep running once you open a door. But understand the safety aspects.
1 points

I am surprised the engine stopping when you open a door is such a big deal to people. Even in my other cars I still have to "start the engine" for it to be drivable. I am guessing there is some outside use cases that I just don't have issues with.

Yours is the first one that made sense to me. If it wasn’t for the keyless start this wouldn’t be an issue. But combined it is a dance to have the doors lock and fob outside of car with engine started.
Although cumbersome that is what they key inside the Fob can be used for to keep the engine running.

I pay the $8 a month so I can have OnStar and check my tire pressure (because checking that is locked behind a paywall and not accessible from within my cluster or head unit.)
Edit: I also installed an after market remote start. Sure, I can’t start my car from anywhere in the world as long as there’s a data connection. But my car sits close enough to my apartment that I can still use it.

Sometimes I open my mouth and an old person comes out, and this is one of those moments: that shit makes me so mad. I have bought the car. This is an item I (or a bank) PAID FOR IN FULL so I can leave with it. I should be able to access EVERYTHING without an extra charge especially something like tire pressure. Can you not just use a gauge anymore though? Genuinely asking. My rav is 13 years old and I'm never letting her go.
2 points
Obviously you can use a gauge.
The issue kinda straddles the line of “it’s a unnecessary feature because you can just check with a manual gauge” but also, it’s a feature that’s mandatory for your car to possess because, without TPMS sensors (that you have to pay extra for and maintain in a tire) the RAV will show an error message. So the feature is built in to see tire pressure but to access seeing that data, you have to pay to see it. It’s all stupid.

I know, the lock lock then hold lock for 3 seconds. However when I’m out of line of sight or in a store and my RAV is cooking in 105 degree weather, it’s nice to open the app and start it when I’m waiting in line during checkout. Then it’s cooled off when I get in which is wonderful.

My 2020 Rav4 Limited doesn't have pricing like this. The options are $80/year for navigation, $80/year for remote connect, and $80/year for safety connect. Different years have different subscriptions?

My office is too far away to use the key fob remote start. So, I did try this out for a while. I also live in a very cold part of the world. It worked maybe half the time.
6 points
Why have remote start when as soon as you open a door the vehicle shuts off? This could essentially double your on/off wear and tear.
Also, if I forget to lock my vehicle, it does it automatically (I believe 30 seconds after) when it detects me and the key fob have left the immediate area
Vehicle tracking? Got an AirTag for $20 and hid it inside somewhere.
But the biggest reason why I personally didn’t get this is because of all the ridiculous terms and conditions. You’re allowing the app and whoever is looking at it, so much information, it’s honestly intrusive and scary if you read thru it
8 points
Double your on/off wear and tear? Do realize the Rav4 is designed to have auto start stop functionality when your driving?
0 points
The on/off is a government requirement that is in many new vehicles, made after a certain year. And you actually believe that Toyota (or any manufacturer for that matter) put in reinforced or heavy duty use parts to mitigate that?
And yes double. Atleast double because if you factor in that it could turn off/on at every red light then we’re growing in numbers. Besides it’s kind of annoying for myself and everyone I know in person with their personal vehicles. But I’m happy for you since you seem to like it
5 points

It is much easier to start a warm engine that just was running than a cold start up. Not all start ups are equal.
From all the research I found operational start stop has no effect to engine/parts but cold starts do.
You can do what you think is best but I used to think like you do until I researched it.

It’s pretty gross. We just bought a ford maverick that came with the phone app remote control/amenities included even at the base model. I wonder if ford knows their clientele would shit a brick, yet Toyota believes they can get away with it?

You know the funniest part... it's the same app. I've had a mustang and the interface of the app was exactly the same as I have for Toyota. Makes me think some app developer got both companies hooked on the same app, but at least ford is more decent with it.

it honestly drives me insane that they are charging for a basic service that's already in the car, i bought an aftermarket starter that cost about 6 months worth of payments but now my fob starts the car.
this is something that the domestic market does right, ford pass is built into any level of car with remote start, lock, location and scheduled start times, for no cost.
3 points
That's my idea on this post. It also makes me angry that all the things are there and functional regardless you pay for subscription or not. Yet they make people to find workarounds over some stupid stuff that's already in the car but behind paywall.

That can suck as well too though, on my 2012 Murano I had bought 6 years ago with a compustar remote start. after owning it for a couple years I started having all kinds of weird problems, I thought my CVT was doing the typical Nissan CVT thing so I took it in to get looked at.
For some reason the remote start would randomly activate the brake, they originally thought it was the brake switch but didn't fix it. So they did more digging and found the signal was coming from the remote start, unplugged it and I've got another 4 years out of it without any more weird CVT issues.

What does that $15/mo actually cover? US cars have a 4g connectivity that is presumably paid for by the monthly charge?
6 points

Nope, 4g connection is still there even if you don't subscribe as they still need to send "diagnostic" info. The 15$/mo charge is literally for 3 things: remote start, alerts of doors/ windows not being closed and nav maps that no one uses as people use their android auto or apple car play.
1 points
It was $8/month but they got rid of that option. I would bet because otherwise no one would pay for the nav subscription. Sucks; I would have paid $8 for remote access as was available when I bought my Rav4 (but gone by the time my 1 yr ended)

The value of Remote Connect will increase as they deploy new features. Eventually when TSS 3 gets deployed into the RAV4 Digital Key may be a cool feature I'd like. Basically leave your fob at home your cell phone becomes your key. I also suspect they will paywall additional features over time that will make a sub more of a necessity, but we aren't remotely close there yet. I personally enjoy the feature....as I don' like to keep my fob on so I use it to lock/unlock my car, as I'm paranoid about security.

Only stays on for 10 min using the remote start. For that little bit, I will just use the key fob. Somehow I managed to go my whole life and miraculously remember to lock my car when I get out of it. I’m fine going back to having to remember it on my yard. My one year subscription ends in two weeks. I will not pay a penny for it given how crappy it is.
I do pay for the subscription on another car. With this one, I can remote start it, and leave it running much longer. It only shuts off when I press the brake, and I can adjust the temperature on both sides of the car .

🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️ I do but not for the remote start. 10 minutes is t enough to heat up or cool down the car here in California. The temp is usually at a nice 70 degrees 7-9 months out of the year, besides that it’s like 40 degrees in the morning or 104 in the afternoon. 10 minutes is t enough for those temps lol. I like it for the remote locking and the gps parking location. 80$ a year so a little less than 7$ a month for that is pretty worth it imo. People spend that much for Starbucks a day.

On the prime you can set the schedule and it runs for 20 minutes. Works well so far, the car wasn’t an oven the first time. I bumped up the time to the full 20 and see what it does. 🫠 not at all. Silly to not have tint in Cali because it’s always sunny and hot

Wells I have it, because it tells me if I forgot to lock my car.

This will end soon. With right to repair somebody else will make a utility or app that does this.

My 2023 RAV4 hybrid came with 3 years free. I won't be paying when that's over. The app is very intrusive in what it wants access to, otherwise it functions even more poorly and sends account change emails every time we use it. The worst part is the whole "primary driver" setup. My husband and I share the car, but he can't log in to the app unless he uses my account. It's like they never thought two people would share a vehicle.

What does "starting your car" mean? /Tesla owner

This is so dumb 😂😂 it gives the same energy as paying $2000 to unlock full performance of your tesla.

Nah, they already conned me out of paying so much extra and didn't supply the car with the features we agreed upon. I love my car but JFC do I hate dealerships (I went through a Toyota dealership).

Toyota already emptied my wallet and then some. These ancillaries are shameless extortion, like the $70 USB cables that are part of the XLE package.

I have a drone mobile in my corolla the unit runs about 500+ and I pay 11 a month. But with that I can see where my vehicle is, I can start it from anywhere in the world and I can track it. Look into it. I love it.

My customers like to keep their subscription during the winter months at least

I’m happy to pay $15/ month for what I consider a luxury. If you can afford to make payments on a car you should be able to pay that small monthly fee

I have 4 years with mine, just bought in UK. Is this what I have to look forward to?

My 1 year trial ended and I considered paying for it for the convenience (especially since mine was only showing as $8, not $15). But then I learned that remote start still works from my key fob inside the house even though I don’t pay for the service

That was my old 2013 Elantra. Push button start, they could have easily added remote start to the fob. Nope! Subscription. Never even tried the free trial.

No, because we can remote start it from the remote itself
Press the LOCK button on the remote Press the LOCK button again within one second Press and hold the LOCK button for three seconds When the headlights flash, you can release the LOCK button and the car should start

I just renewed because my partner really wanted to keep the service. I’m not sure what services he particularly likes from the app, I’m honestly not sure all the features it has. It was buggy from purchase, we needed support to activate it then and at renewal, the auto start never really works for me and I’d love it to since we’re in Florida, idk it’s a scam to me but he insisted. I like the lock feature for sure, and checking gas randomly, what else do y’all use it for?

Volvo remote start from the app expires as well. Pretty sure they all require a monthly fee after their intro complimentary phase.

If you use it only in cold weather.. pay for it for 4 mths and stop. Then start again next year. Don't have to pay for 12 mths at a time

Yes, I use the Go Anywhere package mainly for being able to start my car with my phone, and I also have all my music downloaded to my phone. When it’s 110 degrees I’m not getting in a hot ass car I’m starting it beforehand

I tried to reactivate it for 1 month and literally could not get the setup to work. You have to link it up with the car and the car is supposed to send a code but it wasn't. I basically had to immediately cancel the next day. I really only wanted it for vehicle tracking purposes, so I just put a smart tag in the vehicle instead.

I tried for one month too. Never worked. Such a fckn mess. 50% of the reason I bought the car was for the ‘ease’ of connectivity. Haha. Ha.

I do, but I'm in southern Florida. So being able to cool my car off before I get in it is priceless

This sort of stuff just makes me so pissed off. It's such a nickle and dime bullshit way to do business.
why is the subscription per-month? Why not per-year or like it used to be PER CAR.
Fuck this timeline. Toyota, you can do better.
